Luther - New BBC Cop Drama Starring Idris Elba - Page 2

This starts on BBC America tonight, any US Chewers are advertised to give it a watch.
The first showing starts during the Mad Men finale, but I'm recording the late-night rerun. Looking forward to it. Here's an interesting interview with costar Ruth Wilson.
Can't wait to check this out. Two of my favorite Brit actors doing their thing. Wish it didn't conflict with football and HBO offerings.
Just caught the first episode of this On Demand, and now I'm debating with myself whether I should just go ahead and order the whole series from Amazon.co.uk, because BBC America On Demand has a nasty habit of almost never showing all the episodes of any given series. Also, I might need to add "The gun was in the dog!" to my signature line.

Just do it. I think even the show's most fervent supporters here would agree that if you're thinking this after only the pilot, the last two episodes are going to just blow you right. The fuck. Away.
After two episodes this show is officially kicking my ass. One of the most fucked up but satisfying protagonist/antagonist relationships I've seen on television. And Idris Elba owns the role of John Luther. The final confrontation in episode 2...amazing.
I need to sit down and watch this series, but BBC really debuted this at the wrong time. Pilot at the same time as the end of this season of Mad Men and then up against their Sherlock update on PBS Mystery.
I've been watching show since it began, it's been getting better and better, that two-part finale was absolutely stunning, just real nail biting stuff. I will admit, I thought the subplot of Luther's relationship with his wife tended to get in the way at times, his sudden violent outbursts made him seem more human and his developing relationship with Alice was nicely handled.
Paul McGann suddenly believing that Luther was innocent was abit of a stretch but it was such a tension packed finale, it didn't really matter.

Friend I haven't seen for a few months posted this on my FB on the weekend . . .

A few weeks ago you told me to watch/tape Luther. You said I'd thank you.

Well, it's over, and... THANK YOU.
My job is done.

I honestly wouldn't have known about this show without you either, it's nice to see Saskia Reeves again, the last thing I remember her doing was a mini-series with Alan Rickman and Clive Owen years ago.
This series was incredible. If it somehow were miraculously televised on a broadcast network here in the states it would have killed. I think fans of the typical police procedural just don't know what they're missing.

Just finished the run and... damn! Show nailed the landing so freakin well.

Is this getting a second season? 'cos it really does feel like there's a lot of unfinished business. Luther and Alice's relationship in particular feels like it's just starting off.

It should be getting a second series sometime in the Autumn, I hear it's largely about the court proceedings after the finale of the first season. Really glad to hear it because I genuinely loved the First Season and it was great seeing Idris Elba have a show all to himself. Luther's relationship with Alice was important (and Ruth Wilson was deliciously psychotic as Alice) but it really was the Idris Elba show.

Edit:

The second season will apparently be two feature length specials.

Great to hear that it's coming back. Elba is the headliner but without Alice, the show's just another Cracker or Columbo. Their fates are intertwined, like a reverse Silence of the Lambs. I hope they expand on that, because there are definitely a lot of interesting places they could take it.

It's going to be interesting to see how Luther deals with the fallout of what happened at the end of the first season finale. Especially since it seems like the cops were very well on their way to see what had just gone down. I can't fathom how the show could do the "crime of the week" approach after that.

Just finished watching the finale on Netflix streaming.............WOW. Apparently we are getting two, 2 hour tv movies as a season 2. I can't wait.

HYYYYYYYYYPE.

I love how Alice still manages to look sinister as hell just sitting down doing nothing.

Also, damn Hollywood for giving Elba, Cumberbatch and Freeman so much film work and so preventing us from getting hundreds and hundreds of episodes till the end of time. *shakes fist at the sky*

Is this shit going to premiere already?

June works for me.

First off, damn you all to hell for making me watching this knowing that ending.

Love how Elba plays Luther. He is a very fragile person. When he suffers a beating, he really sells it. No heroics. Just fucking pain and shock.

Ruth Wilson is mine. All of you bastards stay away. Did I mention Alice and I have the same style of Global Chef Knives?

Jesus that ending. I could just sit there and rewatch the last 2 -3 minutes over and over again.

Alice's "It just is.  Death's worse, isn't it?" speech at the end is also one of the most badass lines I think I've ever heard.

And why isn't there a soundtrack for this show? One of you Brits or members of the Commonwealth get on it.

Really that whole ending is excellent from the moment he runs up there.

And screw Columbo, I want Luther's overcoat.

Also, more people should just let Elba use his natural accent.

Yes! Black hero characters never get to show this kind of fragility over here. Here they have to be remarkably tough and usually have a snide remark. I get they want to do the whole strong black male example but it often times leaves the character feeling one note. Luther is the exact opposite but when it's time to fuck someone up he brings it.

I kind of like this teaser. Although, without Zoe around, who is going to be the emotional trigger for Luther? Alice? Someone new? And I really want the chief to suffer as well for being so quick to doubt him.

Yep, that's pretty awesome.

According to my TV guide this is back on Tuesday 14th June 9pm BBC1 and then Tuesday 21st June for the second part.

All of the information I have suggests that the Series is 4 episodes long, rather than 2. Still, tomorrow can't get here soon enough.

Oh sweet. I was lead to believe they were going the Sherlock route with longer 90 min specials (but 2 instead of 3). More is better.

Ahhh

"Orginally planned to be broadcast as two two-hour long episodes, it is to be shown as four episodes"

So, they're still essentially two mini-movies starring Luther. But now split up over a month.

I can deal with that.

LOVE the teaser at the bottom of that page.  Alice's smile and "Busy day." had me cheshire catting it.

Really spotty opening fifteen minutes, and the killer of the week/fortnight was perhaps a little overdone, but when the show works it still really works.

Loved it. Creepy killer, oddness abound and Luther and Alice being awesome. I demand more!

Luther's face when Alice suggested they could go away together was gold.

This was downright sinister at times. I had kind of forgotten what atmosphere Luther can go for.

On the other hand, good to see that punk from Spaced has moved up from stealing weed to murder. Lets hope Tyres can stop him!

Jealous. VERY JEALOUS!

I will be watching this later tonight, can't wait.

After being initially disappointed at the starting point of this season being a little too "clean" for my liking coming off that finale . . . damn, that was a great episode.  The live streaming scene was actually kind of horrible to be a witness to.

Goddamn, this show is grim. Oh, how I missed it...

Alright just saw it. Surprised Alice took full responsibility for the whole thing that way. And oh how I missed me some Alice. Cool to see Luther bail his old buddy out that way, hope he doesn't die in that car. Also learned all about necro porn..........wow.

I'm doing official Chud reviews of this season and I agree with a lot of your points.

http://www.chud.com/57196/thud-review-luther-season-2-episode-1/

Felt like the show was trying to find a new status quo.

Yeah I agree with you about the porn angle. To me that was pretty much my only misstep because I loved the killer. As damaged as she may be, drug addicted, bad childhood ect.. she was accepting money for a sex act. Don't get me wrong it's the creepiest sex act in the world and I honestly worry about any guy who is watching that but her mother calling it rape wasn't quite right. I mean naturally her mom wouldn't want her doing it, but still. Then when all of a sudden they are mob run(does that even happen anymore?) it does make me lose interest. On the other hand im pretty shallow so if it end with a stand off with Luther and some thugs I could be easily brought around. Also her mom essentially giving Luther a guilt trip? Im glad Alice had that line about people using Luther, I hope they dive deeper into that this season. Although there is only like 3 episodes left so.........

Really nice review, Spike.  And I agree with you and waaaaaaaalt about the angle with the girl, too.  And it's a shame, because although the basic premise of that sub-plot is a bit of a mess, I thought everything else - all the tiny little bits and pieces - worked so, so well.  Her and Mark's conversation while waiting for Luther to return, the little moment of conflict and frustration on the street before John just barged back in and took her . . . the acting in these little scenes is always so, so incredibly authentic.

I have to say, though, that I didn't mind the return of the "typical" serial killer as much.  I agree that it's been done over and over for years now, but it's something new FOR Luther . . . I'm interested in seeing if this adversary gets taken down differently because of that.

And oh, Alice.  Her opening the season with "Now what?" (great callback as well as an answer to the original question, really) and her "Heavens, no.  He was livid." were delightful.

It's good Luther is back on even tho I didn't really like the opening 15 minutes(Oooo suicidal cop having a gun to his head for breakfast) but in the end

I was back on board, nice music too. It was funny seeing Kierston Wareing  and the pregnant girl from the shadow line in this. Roll on episode 2 and

more Ruth Wilson.

Thanks for the review Spike, it was a great read. Pretty much how I felt about the first ep (although you put it in much prettier words!)

What I *did* like about Luther's first scene was all the subtle little details in his apartment.  No creature comforts, but a pair of dumbbells on the floor, the laptop kept together with electrical tape has obviously met the wall a few times . . . there was alot of detail as to who John Luther was if someone was a first-time viewer.

I loved the books everywhere in his apartment. Luther always has that vibe to me of someone very well read.
