If it was just repeatedly kicking or flinging enemies into the turbines of dam while shooting them in the face, I would agree with you. But the game has some pretty great set pieces along with it's fun tongue in cheek combat. There's this set piece early on in the game where you're making a get away on train and this gigantic buzz-saw contraption is tumbling along towards you, destroying everything in it's path. Not only is it intense, it's genuinely fun to play. It's quite unlike anything I've seen in a FPS of late.

Some random reviews:

Empire's review.

VGArabia(?)  9.2/10

Bit-Tech.net

Surprised IGN or Joystiq or any of the bigger guys hasn't gotten theirs up yet.

Initial (very initial, I'm only like 2 hours in) thoughts:

Way more bugs than I thought.

Control is pretty fluid, but having one button for sliding, climbing and running sorta sucks.

Story is sorta over the top, but not an enough to make it obvious it's going for over the top.  So it's either a really douchey game or just a bit too subtle.

I'm having fun with it, but the twist of skillshots aren't enough to make me love it.

ETA:  This also seems to suffer from the Gears of War/Uncharted environment design of "here is a random clearing with cover points, I wonder what's going to happen next."

86 / 87 (360/PS3) on Metacritic.  That's a pretty damn good score.

I've been watching those "Killisodes" over and over just waiting for UPS to get here.  Any minute now...

IGN's review is up. They gave it an 8. They pretty much said it was fun and differant than alot of the other FPS games but they hated that it was stupidly short.

Seems a weird thing to hate. I thought this game was all about replay and upping your score/combo, etc.

Echoes mode is making my OCD flare up.  I replayed Rooftops around 15 times because one of my XBL friends had the AUDACITY to be #1 on my list and fuck that shit, that's MY spot.

But now I've got 12,700 and the #18 in the world spot.  I should be happy with this score.... fuck it, no I'm not.  There's still 17 others who DARED to have a score higher than mine, and they shall pay in the most dearly of fashions.

MUST EXTRACT MORE POINTS FROM BLOOD-FILLED PINATAS.

Interesting sidenote:  turning off the Mature Language toggle doesn't merely add bleeps and silence over bad words.  No, Bulletstorm has a TV-EDIT voice track, with changed dialogue.  I'm deeply considering playing through with the TV-edit mode just to see if there's anything on the level of fighting strangers in the Alps or 'Yippie Ki Yay Mister Falcon".

Late to the party, just for the demo, but seems like a lot of fun. How insane do the guns get?

Seems like a mix of Serious Sam, Madworld, and Borderlands(sans freeroaming). I can dig it.

The guns don't get that crazy, but ooooh the things you can do with them.

My favorites are the Flail Gun which shoots out a length of chain with huge spiky grenades at the ends which you can trigger to detonate.  You can wrap them around enemies necks or trip them up with their feet.  Or stick them to walls and things to use as a mine.  If the enemy is next to a post or whatever the flail will wrap around that, severing body parts in the process.  It's secondary fire can send the flail out, cutting a series of enemies in half and then exploding at the end.

Then there's The Penetrator, a huge fucking drill gun.  Shoots a big ass drill bit with a mechanism that keeps it turning.  Today I shot a Creep through his stomach, the drill exploded out of ass and pinned him to the floor.  The drill bit keeps spinning long enough for their bodies rip apart.

This game is fucking great.

Damn, I forgot to try the secondary fire on the flail gun. Only thing I didn't like about that weapon was trying to shoot from cover and accidentally sticking the wall 2 inches in front of me.

I realize its kind of tough to do the bullet time thing in versus mode, and getting trapped in those crazy combos could become kind of a drag, but I'm still a little disappointed at the lack of some sort of deathmatch component.

Aside from that gripe, this game is a blast.

My review (at the other place) - http://guy.com/2011/03/19/review-bulletstorm/

I agree. I enjoyed it in moments, but I absolutely regret buying it. Nice review.

Just got this as a rental. I’m just at the finale of  Chapter 1 and I’m genuinely enjoying the game. I’ve been doddering along on Very Hard and I haven’t had many issues yet, the Chapter 1 boss is a bit of a pain, but I really like the design and look of the game. Reminds me of a weird mix of the Mass Effect and Borderlands Universe, with the Borderlands aesthetic and the Mass Effect sheen.  I can see why people might have been burned on the game as a purchase, but it feels like perfect rental material.

My only annoyance is the stupid cover mechanic which doesn’t really work and kind of detracts from the whole skillshot system. If you want me to use cover in your game, give me a goddamn cover button rather than making me have to crouch behind a chest high wall. Similarly if you want me to try and maximise points from trick shots then don’t make taking cover an essential part of your game. It’s a bizarrely stupid decision which really fucks up the flow of the game.
