Not legal. She was born in Mexico and came to the US at 11 illegally. This started when she got pulled over for a traffic violation and all she had was an old, invalid passport from Mexico.

Is she a habitual offender and criminal who should be deported? No. Is she technically illegal and breaking the law and thus subject to deportation. Yes.

I'm just wondering how the hell she was able to get into College..

Look, I'm sure the girl is a decent person just trying to make the most of her opportunities here, but she's an illegal immigrant right? I don't understand what people think ought to be done here.

ETA: except, that is, for nationwide immigration reform (as opposed to say, making an exception for just this girl).

Given how stupid most American children are*, perhaps rather than kick her out we should be tripping over ourselves to add her to the ranks of our citizenry.

*It's true, sorry! And yes I mean ignorant and not stupid, but at a certain point willful ignorance becomes stupidity, IMHO.

I can see the point being made that since she's been here since she was 11, it's obvious she was brought here by her parents. Do we blame her for something her parents did wrong?

But she's now an adult.. These actions were hers to make. Regardless of who you are lying to the Police is never a good idea. Just wish she would have done something sooner about her position hell a 3.8 gpa is pretty damn good. Well enough I'm sure she got a few grants and such. The south does the Lottery thing right? If your GPA is high enough you get certain grants?

Besides this, how did she get any jobs? Make it to 21 without getting pulled over for a ticket before? If she did, the cops before just ignored that she was driving without a license, which is a different violation.

I feel bad for her, but I doubt she'll have to be booted. She should just move in with Obama's aunt. Everyone knows she's illegal, but she is never deported.

I'm just glad this didn't happen in Arizona or everyone would be shitting all over each other right now.

Yay! This happened at my Alma Mater and in my hometown!

Did I say Yay? I meant FUCK!!!

If anybody remembers the early 90s, KSU (then Kennesaw State College) was the school that Newt Gingrich tried to implement his "conservative factory" at. And Cobb County is the county whose Board of Education started the practice of labeling or outright banning science books that contained explanations of evolution.

Not exactly a progressive hotbed is what I'm saying.

Er. I don't understand exactly why this is such an issue. ICE is notoriously slow and not exactly on the ball, but why are people rushing to her aid? Because she seems nice? Because she's a good student? The story doesn't really go into exactly why she couldn't start the process to become a citizen, only that her lawyer says she couldn't. Why is that a good enough reason for people to decide that this is an injustice?

There was (as far as I can tell in the story) no racial profiling and the officer who pulled her over did their job and submitted the information to the correct government agency. I think we might be overstepping what qualifies as a civil rights disaster.

Unfortunately, what is legal is not always just and what is just is not always legal. I think most people think this is unfair because she was an otherwise law-abiding woman who was actually contributing to society, which now all of that is undone due to our horrifically unfair immigration policies; meanwhile, some asshole sitting in a trailer blasted out of his mind on meth and living on public assistance with a bunch of malnourished kids gets to remain in the country unmolested due to an accident of birth. Whatever you call that, it's not fair and many of us think that justice is fairness.

Oh, I can be on board with unfair. I just read the story looking for a civil rights disaster, and I don't think it's quite that. I'm trying to remember, there was a story a few years back that involved some high school students from Arizona who were in a gifted program that went (if memory serves) to Boston for some academic competition. It ended up that these kids were illegal and most likely didn't even know that they were, and there was a lot of noise about deporting them. It sounds pretty similar, all things considered, to this case. I'll have to dig up the information on that as I'm probably butchering it from memory.

How was she able to register for school? Don't you need a SSN?

She does seem like a nice person who may become a productive citizen of this country, but she still broke several laws. She more than likely will get deported. All her supporters need to gather their resources and help her get back here legally, get a drivers license so she can pick up where she left off.

They also need to make sure they don't forget about her if/when she gets deported. It'd be a shame if they just washed their hands of her once she's out of the country. There's plenty they could do to help her in her home country.

So I'm assuming the right is gonna flip the fuck out about this, right? I'm assuming she must have gotten federal financial aid to attend the University.

I wonder how many people who were in her position have made it through undocumented and graduated. Kind of amazing, actually.
