Recommend a God of War clone

I played God of War for the first time yesterday and had a blast. I've got an Xbox 360 so I would like GoW clone recommandation. Are there more choices than Dante's Inferno or Darksiders?
Bayonetta isn't exactly a "God of War clone", but it's a very fantastic beat 'em up. Play it!

Also, CONAN. It's not amazing, Ron Perlman sounds like he did the voiceover while dropping a deuce and reading the morning paper, the rendering for Conan looks like utter dogshit at points, and it gets downright pain-in-the-ass challenging in spots, but I still liked it.

That's one hell of a sales pitch Jake!

I pulled out all the stops! Plus it should be dirt-cheap, and there's also tits and gore.

If I may be so bold, I'd like to humbly suggest SPARTAN TOTAL WARRIOR. It is sort of like Dynasty Warriors plus God of War and all your troops have an A on their shields which you can pretend stands for 'Alexander'

God damn it, Don Draper, just buy/rent the game.

Just got back from Blockbusters. Darksiders was out and I didn't see Conan so I went with Dante's Inferno.

Viking>>>>>>Conan

Having said that, regret to inform, all the good inspired-by-God-of-War titles are on PS2/3.
You could probably get Devil May Cry 4 or Ninja Gaiden 2 for pretty cheap. Or you could follow Jake's advice and get a game filled with CG boobies created by a fat, sweaty designer who watches a ton of the animus.

Darksiders is great fun, but it is much more like Zelda than God of War, IMHO. If you're looking for a straight up GOW clone, Darksiders isn't it. That said, the combat in the game is still a blast, especially once you find all the weapons and other pieces of gear. My favorite is the giant scythe.

I am currently about 85% of the way through Darksiders, and I would say that it is about 70% Zelda, 25% God of War, and 5% other influences.

I stopped playing Darksiders after a half hour after realizing how derivative it is. It probably didn't help that I just finished God of War Collection before playing it.
Second the love for Viking, but if you go into it expecting a God of War clone you might be disappointed. It's much more open-worldy than Kratos's adventures, and has a lot less variety in enemies.

That said, there's more to do in the game and even some decent sneaking sections. It also delivers a pretty decent sense of scale like GoW does. Some of the big battles are pretty intense.

In that case, Heavy Rain.

Glad to have you on the boards, you'll fill a real void here.

Yeah but ya know what Conan has over these other clones?

He's fucking CONAN.

I think the "Slash-em-up Adventure" genre has split a little bit along an East West divide.

The Japanese entried are represented by Devil May Cry , Ninja Gaidenand Bayonetta. They have a peculiar sense of style both in gameplay, design and plotting. They can also be relatively hard.

The western releases (GoW, Conan, Dante's Inferno, Darksiders) throw in a bit more adventure and puzzles into the mix. (Darksiders throws in more of everything) . They are generally a bit more accessible.

As the resident Brutal Legend defender I say I love that game and I have no sympathy for people who bought it thinking they wer getting God of Metal. Read some reviews before you buy things, people! (It is too short tho)

I thought you were the resident lost 60+ hours of your life to FF13 guy.

I don't think it's too much of a stretch to be irked at a game being misrepresented up until its release. Pre-release articles, trailers, and interviews offered no indication folk would be buying into a rts hybrid. The god damned demo even emphasized typical hacking and slashing legions of evil creature things in an over the top GoW vein. At most the press played the same demo too. Alex even commented on the Demo being a different beast than what the actual game became.

I don't hate the game either - it's not a Two Worlds sized failure - Tim Schaefer has a gift for creating funny, smart characters. Which is a key reason I plunked down for a pre-order - to see what he'd do to follow up Psychonauts. In that respect I was not disappointed.

I just found it amusing that one of the key game design elements was kept well away from the public eye or acknowledged prior to its release.

For the record, I don't hate Brutal Legend either. Everything about the story and presentation is top notch. I even thought the simplified RTS battles worked. The problem is that by the time the main game really starts getting into a groove in terms of story and gameplay, it's already over.
Still haven't played it(waiting for bargain basement prices), but would Wolverine qualify? I've read that some of you guys were having some fun with that one.
Wolverine was way more fun than it had any right to be, despite that shitty, shitty end boss fight. Great call, actually.
Unless like me, you're completely allergic to retarded jumping puzzles in 3d brawlers.

REPAIRED

Though some of those puzzles WERE goddamn unbearable, like the ones where you have to pull the levers and timed-jump back and forth before the stones move and drop you 400 feet to the ground and jesus christ my eye is twitching again
post #30 of 42
You forgot to mention the camera freaking out mid jump for extra fun.

You forget about every single problem in that game the second you have Hugh Jackman turning someone's brain and skull matter into a sloppy pink rainbow with the push of a button. Some things just never get old.

Great suggestion, and it's budget priced now.

You missed a great "Price is slashed now" opportunity there.
Also, come on, the Helicopter rotor kill never gets old, same with the bridge scene.

Also, its not exactly GOW, but Ninja Gaiden II (or the original xbox's Binja Gaiden Black) also get close.
I'd buy some replacement controllers with them, though.

Yeah, that's why I've stayed away from Ninja Gaiden so far.

I had tried the demo to see what all the fuss with GoW was about. Ugh.
How is Devil May Cry 4, anyway? I keep seeing it dirt cheap and I'm tempted, but I haven't played any since the first game.
Ah, I wish you'd asked that question two days ago. Sold that to pay for Red Dead Redemption.

It's fun, and it's extremely pretty, but Nero's a humorless prick, and it's lacking the self-awareness and sheer bug-fuck implausibility that made DMC 3 such the gem.
I like much of DMC4. The demon arm mechanic works pretty well. You could say the Combat grapple in GoWIII is directly inspired by it. The plot is mostly stupid, but there are some cool fights. The 'throttle' mechanic works less well. Its default rev up mode is useless, but it has a secondary trick mode where you time revs between attacks. That secondary mode is cool, but a bit too technical for me to pull off consitantly.

Then you hit the halfway mark and two things happen. (mild spoilers)
a) You switch from Nero to Dante. This is cool cause Dante is a likeable c***. And all the traditional DMC mechanics are back (in a refined way) to play with.

b) The levels essentially repeat up until the final boss. They through in a couple of new enemies, but mostly it's recycling.

It feels cheap, and really knocks a point off what could be a really solid game.

It's a drop in the ocean compared to what I've sunk into WoW

That's true, I just never blind buy a game. Especially in Australia where games are significantly more expensive than in the US, it's too much of a risk to not read reviews. For me I judge that game on what it is, not what I expected it to be before release.

I did read a post-mortem at gamasutra.com that suggested the publisher requested it be represented as a certain way. I'd get the actual quote but my internet is failing to provide the site right now.

Being married and having a 60 hour a week job eats up a lot of game time these days. I wish I could pop back into LOTR Online. I was being a dick with that one comment, but I have to respect anyone who goes balls deep into that game working through it and finding personal enjoyment out of it.

Doesn't surprise me if EA did make that choice for Double Fine.

When a game does come out that is what you expected it to be, that is a special thing. I wanted and hoped Red Dead Redemption would be a great, long overdue, Western game...and that the developers would fix my ui complaints about GTA IV. I just finished playing for the past 5 hours (wife is visiting inlaws this week) forcing myself away to watch Lost. Don't have a shortlist of what else is coming out later this year, but GOTY kept popping into my head.

All I can hope for is that developers really keep an eye out on what the marketing folk are doing and that they're on the same page. Which is something I saw with the senior producers at 2K worked hard at doing - just being honest and passionate about the projects they worked on. Respecting the end user.

Dante's Inferno was ok until the enemies stopped getting tougher and started getting cheaper.
