I actually checked out Metropolis her first EP and it's really quite solid, Many Moons is the standout track on the album but the opening March of the Wolfmasters really establishes the world she's created, the bright, cheerful voice on the PA, I really applaud the ambition she's showing with this and the music to back it up, it could've just as easily imploded.

How did it take me until the brief mentions of this in the Kanye thread to find this glorious piece of music? This album has a hold on me like no other I can remember in recent memory. It's the only thing I've wanted to listen to for the last four days.

I realized something about a month ago. I'm a big fan of Parliament/Funkadelic and Janelle Monae's basically the evolution of that style. Instead of singing about clones, spaceships and pyramids, she sings about androids, electric sheeps and Metropolis. She's a funk artist but because she's a woman, the media probably put her in the R&B ghetto.

The Parliment/Funkadelic comparison makes a certain amount of sense, but I think it's limiting to call her a "funk artist" or an "R & B Singer." The great thing about her is the genre blending and she pulls it off so well that it sounds like she's creating a genre all her own. Let's call it Future Pop. I don't know.

It is incredibly strong throughout the first 10 or 11 tracks before sort of wandering off into some strange and occasionally difficult places, which is really just an incredible feat.

Cold War is still probably my favorite track from 2010. The guitar solo at the end kills it.

Still think this is a very good album but after you get over the rush of so much colourful genre switching I can't help but notice that the quality of the songs here varies a fair bit. Now she's proven her range I'd rather the next one focuses on making every song as great and fully realised as the best ones on here.

Just curious Paul, which songs do you find lacking?

Honestly, the only songs that I find kinda boring and lacking are the last two. Other than that, the album's a genuine masterpiece.

I find as the album goes on there are more and more tracks that sound pleasant enough while they're on but are more memorable for the quirky arrangements and genre choices than for the actual songwriting, which can feel a bit slight sometimes. On Suite III only Wondaland, and maybe Neon Valley Street, really pop out for me, and the last few tracks become kind of a drag. Really good album but I feel like as a whole it shows her potential more than it realises her potential.
