MACGRUBER Post Release - Page 2

I think the movie pushes the humor to a lot of weirder places than a typical action comedy spoof would and for that I really appreciated it. It's just so enjoyably off-kilter most of the time that it made it definitely made it more enjoyable for me.
I think my main problem is that most of the time I don't find the character of MacGruber to be funny at all.
Well I didn't fall completely in love with it, but I thought it was pretty funny. Definitely the best SNL movie I've seen. The FUCK YOU DUDE ending followed by "I do" was the best part. I liked the C4 van gag, but I was hoping to see what Chris Jericho could do in a movie. I think he has potential to be a decent wrestler/actor.

"Well those were fucking great guys.
And this is one fucking asshole of a day."
Not only does it hold up on a second viewing, it's actually a lot funnier.

Funny, I liked it but didn't think it would hold up for a second viewing (a lot of the humor was of the shock and awe variety, i.e. the celery bit). I'm sure I'll be seeing it on HBO soon enough though, so I can put it to the test.

I think this has officially ruined movie sex scenes for me though.

Comedy is a funny thing; One man's "Best SNL movie since Blues Brothers" is another man's "Worst SNL movie that I've seen, by far".

He's a douche with a mullet. Hasn't this fertile ground been plowed previously with Joe Dirt? I got a couple of guffaws out of the darkest bits, but I found most of the jokes to be projected and obvious. It's kind of a toned-down, lame, live-action version of Team America.

I get why some people dig it, but my warning is this; There's truth in advertising here. If you think the trailers look bad, you're probably not going to like the movie that much.

But the humor in this movie isn't based on his Mullet or one-note like you make it sound. It's the bat-shit crazy dark stuff people are responding to.
Forte looking for Kilmer's dick was priceless. "WHERE IS IT?!" And the throat rippings. Oh, the throat rippings. I love how this movie was willing to be totally gory, dark, and completely batshit at the drop of hat. It's not what I expected at all.

This movie had no business making me laugh as much as it did.
I loved it when he threw Cunth off the cliff, shot him as he fell, blew him up after he splatted on the ground, then pissed on him. That was just awesome.
Already at the discount houses around here. Check your paper.

So sad. So funny.
Goddamn this was brilliant. The license plate gag made me laugh harder than anything else in the last year.
I caught this last weekend in a mostly empty theater, and had a blast with it. My girlfriend had been apprehensive about seeing it, but 5 minutes in and she was digging the movie. There was on old couple seated a few rows up, and they left mid way through the movie. I'm surprised they made it that far after seeing Forte saying "I'LL FUCK ANYTHING YOU WANT IN THIS ROOM!! I'LL SUCK YOUR DICK!!"

The notebook about the licence plate was hilarious, but the 2 "sex scenes" were the best. I'll never be able to hear "Broken Wings" the same ever again.
I finally got around to seeing this and boy am I glad I did!!! I didn't know anything about the character (I haven't watched a full episode of SNL in about 15 years) so I had no idea what to expect, but jesus christ this movie had me in stitches. The "plot" is freaking terrible and almost non-existent, but the everything else was amazing. I was laughing so hard I was starting to cry.

My favorite bit? When MacGrubber was talking with his friend at the Pentagon while destroying that car at the graveyard. Genius.
Just saw it today at probably one of the few theaters left playing it, and it was hilarious. I know it's too much to ask from this kind of movie, but I did want an actual plot and pacing, but in a way it doesn't matter. I laughed my ass off. This movie shows what a well placed "Fuck you!" can do.

And the fucking license plate gag. I love what a shit head MacGruber is.
This was a blast. Think I'll be chuckling to myself for a while. Like many months.

I thought saying 'Cunth' would get old after a while. It actually got funnier.
Forte is so good in this - in a just world, this would have been his Ace Ventura.

MacGruber himself didn't work for me (except in the awesome sex scenes) but everything else around him was funny. Some great visual gags.
I think it says something that I'm actually mildly frightened to see what they added back for the 'unrated' version. But damn I loved this movie.

I think this and the A-Team movie with will be a perfect Fall double feature.
I really haven't laughed so hard during a movie in a long time. Yeah it has lots of misses, but when it hits it hits real hard. Many classic lines and moments throughout.
Damn it, so this movie is really funny? Damn you blockbuster! I don't want to wait a month to rent this from Redbox.. unless it's out on those new Blockbusters kiosks....hum....
What's another month? You already LET IT DIE AT THE BOX OFFICE NICK. Why won't anyone think of the SNL actors??
It's really weird how this movie is getting so much Chud praise, while pretty much everyone else everywhere is calling it a massive stinker. Usually you get a reasonable number of critics agreeing with Chud, but not this time.
I watched MacGruber last night and enjoyed it. The movie had me when MacGruber played a wailing sax during the opening credits. The sex scenes were crazy. Like Rene said, I'll never think about the song "Broken Wings" the same way again.
MacGruber felt slight as hell, and I can see how too much expectation can swamp a movie like it, but I had great time with it. Just reading over some of the gags in the movie mentioned in the thread and laughing my ass off, I could see it doing well over time. Hot Rod was mentioned upthread. I don't think they're really comparable, but if you put a gun to my head, Hot Rod is easily superior. But who cares. Programming the two movies together would be a fun back to back marathon.
Maybe this will grow on me like The Zohan did. But this is actually worse than I remember. Although the bits I liked before were still funny.
Had a lot of fun with this. Funny, considering I'm picky as hell with comedies. Already mentioned, but the gag with the plate number is awesome. The timing with some of the cutaways is fantastic. I never expected to have more fun with this than Iron Man 2, but the last few days proved me wrong.
I wanted to like this, given Devin's review, but I LOL'd exactly once and by the end, I was extremely disappointed. As previously stated in other threads, I'm something of a MacGyver buff, and have tremendous respect for the character. I was against the idea of a parody in the first place, but when at last I got around to checking out the film, I did so with an open mind: if they goofed on MacGyver but treated the character and his principals with a certain base level of respect, I could get on board (like in TBBM, where the Brady's love for each other as a family was at least never the subject of a joke, even as everything else about the show was mercilessly mocked)

With that said, by the time the end credits rolled we'd learned that the reason MacGruber didn't use guns was not out of principal, but because he was incompetent and frightened of them

Now, to me, that kind of killed my enjoyment of the film. Kilmer was goofy, and I want to see him in more movies like this (well, I want Val Kilmer to appear in more films period). There were a handful of good jokes or clever moments. With that said, there wasn't enough 'good' to outweigh the bad feelings that resulted from the movie's disrespect towards the MacGyver concept.

It was mean spirited, essentially, and I didn't like that.

Just not for me, I guess
Definitely front-loaded the jokes with this one, but that's okay. Pretty much laughed my ass off at the same gags you guys did (the sex scenes were legion) and at all the smash cuts. Gotta say though, I thought the movie looked really good especially for a comedy. Don't think MacGruber's that strong of a character but Forte's got some really funny moments in this, as do the rest of the cast so no big loss.

I agree with this take almost entirely. It's a flick where the parts are greater than the sum; I laughed pretty hard at some throwaway stuff, but I have no desire to see this again. Even at 90 minutes, it felt way too long.

Finally saw this movie, nothing but love from me. Some random stuff I loved:

-"You're loco, man!". Subtitle says "You're crazy, man".

-(MacGruber, buzzed after firing a gun for the first time) "I can't believe I wasted my time with all those stupid fucking gadgets!"

-Val Kilmer's hysterical glee when he reveals that his dick got blown off, thus denying MacGruber his dream revenge.

Too much gold here.

Rewatched this.  Kilmer's performance is even more hilarious the 2nd time around.  I also noticed that the movie has some solid production value.  It's actually pretty slickly shot and doesn't come across too much like a cheap parody.

Yeah, for a $10M movie it looks good.  It's too bad the fact that it was called 'MacGruber' turned so many people off.

I love how this film subverts 80s action satires. I mean, it subverts the films which subvert 80s action movies. It subverts Hot Shots. And Hot Shots II. So subversive.

And the hit rate for the jokes is at least a solid 90%. The ol' CHUD Tag Team review is correct. This thing's a winner.

Random scene which cracked me up which hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet: Kristin Wiig losing her shit on the floor of the cafe while she hears MacGruber and Piper's surveillance van getting shot up through her earpiece.

Also, the underwhelming water ambush in Cunth's security area.

Most of the explosions look like cack but everything else is fairly solid.

Well the reason no one talked about the coffee shop Wiig stuff is that it was in the trailer so when it first came out it's easy to not appreciate from having seen it in the previews.

This movie getting such a bad wrap is one of life's enduring mysteries for me. It deserved to do so much better. And this is coming from someone who's as cold on Forte as is humanly possible.

I stumbled upon this movie awhile back and had remembered some good things were said on CHUD so I gave it a shot.  I laughed so fucking hard my wife had to come into the bedroom and make sure I was okay.  MacGruber pounding the ghost of his wife on her grave might be the funniest thing I've seen in forever.

The sex scenes were definite highlights. Between this and Bridesmaids, Wiig may be the queen of hilariously awkward sex.

The sex scenes are comedic magnificence in every way.

I even loved the dumb shit that wasn't especially original, like how MacGruber's on the radio mic reassuring a very frightened and unsure Wiig that everything's going to be fine as she moves into a very, very dangerous situation, and then he turns to Piper and says giddily, "This is exciting!". I'm sure I've seen the joke before but in the context of the scene and with Forte playing the shit out of that character it was another bullseye.

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!?!

Well?

"Your ladyfriend is very attractive."

"Thankyou."

"I hope you like being dateraped, m'am."

"This is my daughter."

"....sorry."

Just got the DVD, pretty much expecting to like it as much as in theaters, and it's probably even more enjoyable on multiple viewings and on a tv, where somehow the energy of it feels more suited. I'm still a little...not disappointed, but can't help but want more of an evenly paced story with better follow through on-oh fuck it. It's so damn hilarious. There's only two or three very small jokes in the movie that don't work for me, but they're over in about two seconds. That, and at least for my tastes, the way the camera tries to imitate 80s Bruckheimer action movies seems half baked. I appreciate it, because I love the idea, but it isn't really worked into the story as well as I'd like...but still, who cares?

I wonder if having the character have any link to MacGuyver hurt the movie's box office-the real draw, anyways, is just how bat shit the character MacGruber is, and how fully Forte inhabits him. He's a hateful, ignorant, violent, arrogant shit of a person who's has little regard for others, yet he has this simple quality-affability's been used a lot-that makes him likeable. I mean, I like him for how much of a spiteful asshole he is, anyways. The single minded need for revenge with the license plate and Von Cunth could hardly endear me to him anymore than I am. He's kind of like a live action Eric Cartman.

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

His anger over Von Cunth having his dick burned off is genius. That MacGruber's first response is to get angry-including moments like the guy insulting his car, and Piper telling MacGruber early on that being taken off the mission is appropriate, "Given the circumstances", where MacGruber's first instinct is to yell, "Fuck you!" define him. In a way, I think we all wish we could act on those impulses and get away with it like MacGruber does.

Listen to the end credits after the photo montage ends for a song from Vicki and MacGruber.

And my goodness, those sex scenes. MacGruber almost comes off as psychotic.

MacGuyver remains a beloved property both domestically and around the globe. DVD sales were very strong, the show is in reruns all over the place, and he is a fantastic character in general

Suffice it to say I don't like this movie, and in fact I worry that MacGruber has damaged MacGuyver, not the other way around

I do have one problem with the DVD, which is that the audio levels are way off. If I turn up my surround sound to hear the dialogue clearly, the music and sound effects come in way too loud. If I set it so the music is at an acceptable level, the dialogue is almost inaudible.

If wanting MacGruber to do well is wrong because it might damage MacGuyver, then I don't want to be right.
