Good free video editing software?

A few friends and I are ripping our hair out to edit a crappy music video. What are some good options? Almost everything we've used has basically forced us to edit chronologically, and it's a royal pain.

Looking for something that's multitrack, preferably(if that exists). We have a "base" video that goes through the entire song, and were wondering if any software allows you to plop a clip "on top" of that base track instead of inserting, and thus sending the base out of sync.

I don't case about stuff like effects, but being able to trim and crop easily is a biggie.

I hope this makes sense, I don't know the terminology.

Thanks a lot.

If you're really just trying to get this particular video done, go and download the free 30-Day trial of Adobe Premiere and hop on it. Great program, powerful, and reasonably intuitive. Obviously that isn't going to help you long term, but in a pinch...

Avidemux is GPL, but I'm not sure if it's what you're looking for. Also, if downloading it for windows, make sure you download from a reputable source!

Sony Vegas 30 day free trial!

Has a ROBUST audio feature. Multi-tracks, equalizing, fading, etc.

We ended up getting the video done on one of the 3 versions of Windows Movie Maker we tried out. What an atrocious program. It was a bit of a last minute rush-job. I'd link you to the video but it's not my proudest moment, to say the least(for content, not for the editing, which is decent considering).

These suggestions will definitely be kept in mind for next time, thanks a lot!
