Prince Of Persia Post Release - Page 2

There's a thread in the Movie Miscellany forum about Hollywood whitewashing.

Hate to say it, but I sort of agree with PK.

Any further POP discussion on my part will occur there.

I just wanted to say you can't possibly know what you're talking about, OB. No need to respond, I just wanted that entered into the record.

I guess the nest target for Princess Kate will be Ray Harryhausen for his casting in the Sinbad films........

Stunned that no one ever talked the film's only highlight:

"God help us!
THE ROBE IS POISONED!!!!!!!!!!!!"

*king is roasted inside a smoking robe*

The rest of the movie really isn't worth talking about. It's a mix of mediocre and messy.

The poisoned robe made alot of sense. That's how Heracles died: a poisoned robe given to him in error by his jealous wife.

The rest of the movie I can't even bring myself to discuss. A big waste of time, though I have to say that the whitewashing of the casting bothered me much more than I thought it would.

I bet the poison robe Hercules wore was pretty lame compared to the one in Prince of Persia. This one TRAPPED people inside and grilled them to perfection.

I hope Hercules was felled by a robe as sinister and fast acting as the robe from POPTSOT! Makes for better peripeteia

Without even touching on its representation of Persia's people, it was a complete and utter mess with Bruckheimer's fingerprints all over the damn thing due to its relentless rapid-fire editing, worn storytelling tropes and beautiful production values marred by CGI that couldn't convince me of magical sand to save its life. Despite everything else, at least it was a sporadically beautiful mess, for whatever that's worth.

Draco, I'd concur that the wide shots of the "Persian" city were spectacular and whetted my appetite for the fantastic adventures that could surely take place in such a location. Sadly the movie never even really explored the parkour possibilities of a tiered city like that (beyond the two minutes of sound stage bound jumping antics we did get)

Which is surprising to discuss now, to say the least, because even with the horrendous editing that normally plagues a Bruckheimer-produced film, he knows how to use an environment well enough (often to a fault in the believability department). I was astounded by how tame the stunts in Persia seemed to be in comparison to his other work, and had to wonder whether or not Mike Newell's relative lack of experience was particularly working against him in those scenes. After all, even the most challenging action sequences in his Harry Potter film are pretty standard in terms of design if you re-watch them, whereas staging acceptable parkour takes not only advice from experts, but some serious focus on the director's part.

Pretty much. Except for the enjoyable part. What a slog. I fell asleep before Act 3. But not before I broke out into renditions of "Street Rat" during the rooftop chases. Bought the blu as an afterthought for $10 during a Black Friday sale at Best Buy last fall. Seeing POTC flick in theaters this weekend prompted me to pull it out finally. The SCORPION KING has more charm and pulpy fun than this. Bickering between 2 characters that turns into "not bickering" does not equal chemistry.

The Mouse will not be getting a POTC level franchise from this.

No way. No fun. Huge disappointment compared to Bruckheimer/Disney's other swash-buckling property. Hell, even CUTTHROAT ISLAND is more memorable (and I barely remember that one). Every single Harryhausen Sinbad flick pisses on this movie from their lofty positions.

The white-washing here is an after thought now in hindsight. It's overshadowed by how dull the flick is. I suspect the same from THE LAST AIRBENDER, which I have yet to see.

Prince of Persia is really just terribly mediocre.  The Last Airbender is terribly terrible as well as dull.

The Hallmark ARABIAN NIGHTS made-for-tv miniseries is better than this.
