Less Than Zero (1987)

Couldn't find the old thread.

Jamie Gertz' (Gertzs'? Gertzes?) right ear is the most hideously deformed thing I've ever seen. It's bizarre and scabby and only clearly visible in a single shot, sort of like Val Kilmer's elbow in Heat. Frightening.

What I find interesting about this movie is how Robert Downey Jr. is obviously an acting powerhouse to be reckoned with, but it's a very unpolished performance. Sort of like watching Edgar Wright's A Fistful of Fingers, you simultaneously get the feeling that A) this guy is super-talented, B) this guy hasn't begun to peak yet, and C) I didn't think of a third thing. On the other hand, I imagine Robert Downey Jr. was ALREADY a drug addict of some sort while this was filming, so that helps.

The movie is also annoying sort of thing where anything that seems silly or stupid can be defended as a choice to heighten or distort or generally alter reality in some way. But the David Lee Roth song sex scene is super silly and dumb, no matter how you look at it, right? And to be clear, the ending IS a homage/rip-off of Midnight Cowboy, right? I'm very insecure about this because the movie seems SO surface and SO obvious that I feel there may be some kind of subversive subtext that I completely missed.

Finally, Jamie Gertz' (Gertzs'? Gertzes?) face never emotes above her nose. It's actually kind of a funny thing to look out for.

I remember reading the book in my teens and thinking how disaffected and cool it was, and then growing up and thinking it wasn't particularly good. I feel the same about the movie- Downey is an absolute whirlwind in it, sweeping everyone else off the screen, but he's about the only thing in it that isn't either bad or ridiculous (Spader is OK).

I still randomly quote James Spader dialogue from this film :

Someone trying to shirk their responsibility = "Everyone is accountable"
Being hit with multiple questions (or the same question by two different people) = "It's like a fucking game show here"
Somebody inquiring about someone's whereabouts = "(insert name) is dead. Forget about him."
Sadly, there is probably more that isn't coming to me at the moment.

Has there every been a film based on a book that shared less with it's source material than this adaptation did? Some character names are the same, and there is cocaine. That's pretty much it.

The book is a brilliant study of disconnect and alienation, an MTV-era Great Gatsby with cocaine instead of booze.

The movie sucks, save Robert Downey Jr. and its awesome soundtrack, including "Life Fades Away," a beautiful piece penned by Glenn Danzig (!) and sung by Roy Orbison (!!)

Is Jamie Gertz's character supposed to be a native resident of L.A.? She sounds like she's from North Dakota.

This film was my introduction to RDJ and I've been a fan ever since. That alone justifies this movies existence as far as I'm concerned.

I thought the movie was a decent interpretation of the book (which makes for fun airline reading, I can say from personal experience). Plus, it brought us a decent cover song by the Bangles on the soundtrack. Hasn't Downey come out publicly and admitted the coked up act wasn't really an act and he barely remembers this movie?

Read the book when I was in high school and thought it was decent, I had heard terrible things about the film so I stayed away from it. Then a few years ago I found the dvd for $2.

Haven't been able to sit through the first half yet...

Him getting all method actor about the part was apparently the turning point from him being just another party boy in the Brat Packs LA to being the full-on junkie he became.

I don't see any old threads for this flick, but I did locate a "Is Robert Downey, Jr. DESTROYED forever?" thread from 10 years ago.

I guess the answer's NO.

RDJ is amazing in this even though the movie sucks the sweat off a dead man's balls. I find it hard to believe that everything in Andrew McCarthy's life goes to shit during ONE semester of college.

Also, while it has nothing to do with the book. Bret Easton Ellis can just fuck right off.

What went so bad while he was away? In the span of three months, his buddy got fucked up a little more often then is appropriate and then banged his girlfriend. I've had more bad shit go down in a single evening, let alone 12 weeks.

Yeah, he's a disphit. The moment I read his recent and completely asinine thoughts on female directors, I knew it was going to bite him in the ass, and so it has.

As for the film, I honestly don't remember it very well aside from being sort of bored by it.
