What is the point of a message board?

No bullshit or snark. When you come to a place like this what is your motivation? Are you here to discuss issues? Or are you here to exchange ideas and share opinion? Are you here to educate yourself? The problem I've been having lately (and this isn't confined to here. This is more a blanket statement about the nature of sites like these) is that all those listed above seem to be very, very low down the totem pole. What seems to be the primary motivation for the majority of people (and the sole purpose of message boards themselves) is the notion that you have something to "prove".

I've just seemed to notice that a disturbing number of discussions on message boards seem to always eventually divide along lines that aren't necessarily about an exchange of ideas, discussion or critical examination. More often they're about that notion of proof: Proof that your opinion is superior, proof that you're smarter than someone else, proof that your tastes are more refined than others. I think I'm just as guilty of it as anyone (maybe it's not even a conscious decision or choice in many cases) but I just wonder where does this come from and how does the culture of a message board enable it.

I come here to share, learn and be part of the CHUD-munity(c). I might have felt like I had something to prove when I first came here, but those feelings evaporated like water as I've been slowly but inexorably pulled into the warm embrace of CHUD

It's not the culture that enables it; I think we can chalk that smarter-than-thou passive-aggressive message board attitude to the anonymity provided by the internet. With a nickname to hide behind one can unleash his inner douche.

I come to exchange ideas, share opinions AND educate myself. I respect the opinion of other Chewers and am always hoping to be informed of something I didn't know or some movie I missed or just some piece of news I hadn't yet heard.

But I know what you mean about the "proving yourself" thing. I don't get that vibe from CHUD as much as I do from other boards I've been a part of. I'm not sure why that is but I'm thankful because many other boards become far too hostile. I think it's the anonymous nature of a message board that allows that.

EDIT: Dan beat me to it!

Man, if that were my reason for coming, I would so fail.

I came for the discussion and stayed for the cake.

I have two friends in real life, so film discussion can be limited. Film discussion here, though, much better.

I proved myself on the Diva's Ass thread and have been coasting ever since.

Chicken. And. Broccoli.
I'm here for Ripoll's bear and Jake's rapiness.
I'm here because the discussion is good and it's my online home.

Ether that or to kick ass and chew bubble gum which ever is funnier.

I'm here for the chicks.

And Jake.

When I yak about movies and TV in real life, people tend to cup their hands over my mouth after awhile. At CHUD, they can't do that.

I'm here for World Peace â„¢.

I'm here to read your discussions, see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of the women.

And... Sigged.

In real life, only two of my friends aren't this type: "Can you ever just ... watch a movie? You're overthinking this."
I came for the funny, but stayed for the punch and pie.

I think someone's pissed about the Lost thread.

My boyfriend brought me here. But, yeah, I'm here to keep my mouth shut and learn most of the time, and make some bad jokes the rest of it. I've got nothing to prove to you bitches.

No one in this college gives a shit about movies, so I make do with CHUD. And I am all the better for it.

You're a female on the internet. You've still got to prove you're not Chris Hansen.

Careful, Justin, or you could find yourself in the seat.
As for me, I got here because I thought it was a porn site, like everyone else.
Kidding aside, the point is having fun and stimulating disscussions, and meeting new people, i guess.
Also, to make sure Jake's posting and not out there, waiting to strike.

A lot of people come to message boards to say things they wouldn't dare in real life and to physically threaten people that have no chance of physically finding them. In other words, a place where the bullied come to bully.

I come here to masturbate furiously over the pictures in the "behold the spider cricket" thread in the misc. culture forum. After those twenty seconds are over, I just sort of look around and try to not offend anyone.

Definitely this. I simply cannot talk about film to the degree of depth I crave outside of chud in my day to day life. The fact that many of the same intellects that have such scintillating cinematic discussions here also happen to know a lot about politics, or philosophy or a myriad of other topics makes for an even richer experience. The fact on top of that, that many of you are fucking funny pricks as well and that I find myself really enjoying the virtual company around here makes these message boards a pretty darn valued part of my life.
Yeah I can talk about all sorts of shit that are "no go" topics with my friends and co-workers, and I can do so with a talking Dog and a talking Lizard, amongst many others!

The message board is different things to different people... for some it's absolutely about trying to be funny, or smart at least part of the time. I come here to talk and read about film and television, because few people if any care about this stuff as much as myself and many of you. Personally, when I post an assertive opinion on something, like say Lost, I'm looking to be challenged. I'm argumentative by nature and that's just the way I "discuss".
1) To foster discussion.

2) To form cliques "Lord of the Flies" style.

3) To not block ads.

4) To wait for the next inevitable meltdown.

5) Other....

For me, CHUD is a community of (sometimes) like-minded people with whom I share and discuss various topics. I'm happy that I've gotten to know some people from here both on the boards and off, but for the most part its just a place to discuss shows and movies that my non-Chewer friends don't watch or want to discuss in depth. For some people this place is their job and I get that they have to take it seriously. For others its just entertainment. If you don't like a thread or post, just ignore it. The constant pile-ons just get so boring. But I get that when you are attached to a place, you want it to represent your ideals. But the constant marking of territory is just an annoying aspect of message boards. I'm truly happy with the diversity of people and ideas here and I wouldn't change it for the world.

I appreciate the candor and thoughts expressed in this thread.

I participate on one other message board actively. I'd say its direction and purpose is vastly different than the community here at Chud. I also believe that board attracts a greater cross section of the general population than the one here. I don't think I'm reaching when I say this community attracts a certain type of personality and mindset. Yes, we all have disparate backgrounds and differing experiences but I tend to think that there is also a dominant thread of commonality among all of us. Yet that other community, which (in my opinion) attracts a far greater range of personalities and interests, doesn't have a strong, dominant thread amongst its members that I can discern (unlike the one here) yet follows an eerily similar pattern of behavior in regards to the original points I made.

What I wonder is thus: Is it human nature that drives this or is it the evolution of mass communication across a medium like the internet? Is it a combination of both? Do you find in today's world these things bleed over into actual human interaction?

Every once and a while Carly will start laughing out of nowhere. I say "What is it?" She replies "Fucking Paul McCartney and his fucking signatures."
I view it from a different angle. I see internet message board behavior as an indicator of the repression inherent in modern societies. Its the same thing I see in other drivers when I'm on the road, retail workers when I'm shopping, college students when I'm hanging out, etc.

I feel like, in my small part of anytown America, anyway, that we are forced to bottle things up more and more until we start expressing angst in unhealthy ways.

It's just a BS anecdotal observation, but it's how I'm thinking about it right now.

As for my reason to be here: I really like how much everyone here knows about different aspects of film, and I would often have questions I was unable to ask while merely lurking.
