IT/Web Design people - need advice

My job is looking for media interns to update our website and help create gender tutorial videos (i.e., knowledge of flash), and my boss would like applicants to demonstrate their competency by completing some task similar to the job they would be doing. Suggestions for such a task? I know nothing about html, creating/maintaining websites, or creating videos.

How complicated are these things going to be?

I created this "page" in about a minute or so using Google Sites.

You can also change the url for the site so it doesn't read sites.google.com etc.

There are lots of other things you can do as well, but if you are primarily interested in just putting up some information, links, videos, documents, etc. You can do stuff like that in no time without about the same skill set you need for Microsoft Office products. No knowledge of html, needed, and you just upload videos to youtube and then basically link to them. I created those slides that play (and you can change it so you can let people click through at there own pace with about 5 seconds of work) in Google Docs (basically PowerPoint light).

I'm certainly not trying to push you to do it yourself, but if it is very simple and you don't mind making it with google tools, this might be an option.

Here is the quick site I made (it took me longer to type this post than to make that site).

Oh, and I've never used Google Sites before today. I've been meaning to look at it, and this gave me an excuse to see what I could do in just a couple minutes. I assume if someone had an hour or so, they could make a much nicer web page.

If money is an issue, though, and it isn't too complicated, this may be a possibility for you.

Microsoft Office's web page creation stuff might also be this simple, but I've never used it.

P.S. - I have no expertise in any of this, but this just popped to mind. I don't actually make web pages... well, apparently I just did make one at least...

The applicant would have to update and maintain these two sites:

http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/genderequity/

http://www.hunter.cuny.edu/gendertutorial/

The first one is just updating dead links and changing the narrative text. The other involves actually creating gender videos. Research assistants have already done the research and created narratives/story boards for upcoming videos. The intern would be responsible for making those storyboards come to life.

Creating a website is much easier compared to filming/editing videos. Many designers have multimedia portfolios showcasing their work, but as an idea for a task: Perhaps create an idea for a demo video, then see how long it takes for the applicants to put the video together and post it on a custom web page? Would that even be feasible?

What does that mean, "Gender Tutorial Videos"?

Don't we all already know how to be our genders though? I thought that's what it meant, but the concept did not make sense to me

Joking.

Anyway, Diva, I have web and a/v skills, so I can help if you have questions.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I keep telling my boss that to find someone with these skills she'll have to pay them.

Some ideas:

- Have applicant provide links of URLs they've developed/edited
-Give applicant a description of changes to be made on the website and have them do them on a mock site
- Provide factoids to be used in various brochures/videos and have them write up a paragraph so that the info can be understood in laymen's terms

Would these be videos or glorified Powerpoints? If they are just text and information, you may not be as dependent on someone with extended video expertise. For example, in one of our divisions at work, they create online tutorial vids using software that converts Powerpoint to video.

Re: web work, I'd definitely require them to provide examples of their work. If they can offer proof of their development skills, then you can rest assured they could make basic text changes to your site.

Here's one of our tutorials. I guess they could be described as glorified power points.

"Glorified Powerpoints" was my crappy term for something created using presentation software, as opposed to a video. It looks like the tutorial was created using some sort of presentation software, which might be more within a web designer's grasp.

It doesn't look like you would need someone with much video experience, especially if you want to stick with the method you're currently using. I can't quite figure out the software being used to create the tutorial you linked to, but a better task might be to give them the info to put together an online presentation on their own. I'm guessing someone could do that without prior video experience.
