"Socially the man's a genius" - A Tribute to Renaldo The Heel

I will fully admit to being a bit of a Raimi apologist, and I know that he's pretty much disowned CRIMEWAVE (and the film is a mess), but its relentlessness in throwing gags and set pieces on the screen ends up winning me over every time I watch this. It's madcap, it's silly, it makes no sense, but I can't not like a Raimi/Coens team up, and you can see their talents shine through in a lot of the film.

I've read that part of the reason Raimi's disowned the movie is because Campbell was replaced in the lead role, and while I think Campbell would've been great as the lead, his performance as "The Heel" might surpass Ash as my favorite Bruce role (although I've got a soft spot for Bubba Ho-Tep). Although, Reed Birmey is not great in this.

Also, here is quick little clip of Raimi and Campbell discussing the movie around the release of Evil Dead II. Kinda neat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrWyKJfZzxQ

ETA: Btw if you click on the youtube link and go to the uploaders channel, he has a few of the Raimi/Campbell early super 8 shorts.

Like you said, it's a mess, but it's got some really creative stuff going on. And yeah, the lead actor is awful. Always funny to see Brion James being a total cheese.

I need to get my VHS of this transferred to a DVD-R before it falls apart.

Yeah, I love "The Parade of Perfection Safest Hallway in the World" chase scene despite the fact that I have no idea what's going on., it's just so fun to watch.

Plus, "The Classic" gets some major screen time in the climactic high speed chase.
