Using an iPod without iTunes

Thread Starter
So, my wife got me an iPod Nano as a gift, but I don't want to use iTunes.

Per this thread of iTunes alternatives, I would like to use Winamp (which I've used in the past) or MediaMonkey (which my friend uses and recommends) to manage my iPod. However, both sets of instructions indicate that the iPod has to be set up with iTunes first:

"First, make sure to enable disk use on your iPod by connecting it and opening iTunes (if it doesn’t auto-launch). Select your iPod and then click the Settings tab. Scroll down to the Options section and remove the check from the box labeled Open iTunes when this iPod is attached. Then place a check in the Enable disk use box (if it isn’t checked already). Click Apply."

I ask of the CHUD community:

1. Do I really need to use iTunes, even if just in the beginning to prep the Pod for non-iTunes use?

2. Can it be any installation of iTunes? For example, can I install iTunes on any old PC, prep the iPod, then use it with Winamp on a completely different PC?

My music/audiobook/radio program collection resides on external hard drives, not on any computer. I don't know if this makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I think you need to use it, yes, and also I don't know why you wouldn't want to. It's great! You have the store, the cool visualizer, a million and one reasons to use the program

EDIT Don't know about the PC specific questions: I have a mac

There are workarounds generally, but honestly, if you don't want to use iTunes just buy another MP3 player. It's just not worth the hassle.

You'll still need to use it for any firmware updates or that kind of thing so you'd probably still need to have it installed.

Don't blame you for wanting to use something different.

Personally, I use rockbox because there was no ogg support in apple's firmware. This isn't a solution for everyone, though, only the person who is never going to use any other kind of apple compatible hardware/software. I'm also not sure what new hardware rockbox is supporting these days.

EDIT: I should have said apple specific hardware/software, because I can use my rockboxed ipod w/video on my wife's third party stereo with ipod dock - the remote doesn't exactly work flawlessly with it, though.

Enjoy Apple's closed world!
