What the hell is this? Is it any good?

yes

The commentaries are good, but it cuts out one of the all-time quotable lines:

"Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun."

and replaces it with the less quotable:

"I ain't that good."

I also prefer the theatrical ending to the alternate one here, but that's only b/c my Ash vs. Freddy vs. Jason script depends on it.

It clears up some goofy edit flubs, such as why Ash goes nuts and destroys the mirror in the windmill. The original ending is also on there, but opinions are mixed. If this is the final Evil Dead film, I prefer the S-mart ending. However, if Evil Dead 4 somehow crawls out of the woodpile, I think the original ending would be perfect.

Exactly what he said. It has an excellent commentary, but I seriously miss the "Good. Bad. I'm the guy with the gun" line. Hell, even Bruce mentions in the commentary that he thought it was a much better line. I also prefer the S-Mart ending (although the alternate ending is very Ash). I may get beat up for this, but I also thought that the extended windmill scene was way too long. I prefer the original.

I still wish for the version that has the Sci Fi channel exclusive with the line:

"Yeah right, and I'm a Chinese jet pilot."

I second that. While the depressing ending is much more fitting and artistically valid, the theatrical ending is just so cool!

And without it, you lose:

"Ma'am, I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave the store."

"Name's Ash. Housewares."

"I'll swallow your soul!"
"Come get some."

"Hail to the King, baby."

Which would be a cinematic travesty.

The one with Evil Dead on it is the British R2 double discer, 'cos apparently we Brits need telling it's an Evil Dead sequel.

There's also a R3 version, which has a perfect transfer of the beat-up director's cut.
