Not Quite Hollywood Checklists

I don't know about anyone else, but Mark Hartley's documentary Not Quite Hollywood has made me go a bit Ozploitation crazy lately. I'm just generally not fond of raunchy sex comedies, but I've been ticking off quite a few from the action and horror sections lately (though I had seen a good chunk already).

Here's my list so far (not including the obvious, like Mad Max or the newer films like Undead):
Dark Age (1987): The doc is correct in that it's a great film hampered by a bad croc effect. One of the best.
Fair Game (1986): A play on the I Spit on Your Grave formula, which I actually liked more than the source. Not as rapey, and it gets really gets the blood boiling anyway.
Harlequin (1980): Understated, but effectively oddball.
Howling III (1987): So strange it's almost worth a recommendation.
Patrick (1978): Frankly, kind of dull, with good bits scattered over it.
Razorback (1984): Artful and exciting.
Stone (1974): Definitely worth seeing
Strange Behavior (1981): Above average, with a handful of really great scenes.
Thirst (1979): A largely original vampire movie. Worth seeing for how strange it is.
Turkey Shoot (aka: Escape 2000, 1982): Brilliant exploitation mess!

Next of Kin (1982): Takes its time, but features a strong last act, and some really artful touches.

I blind bought Turkey Shoot aka Escape 2000 on dvd back in March and loved it. Damn great exploitation movie.

Thanks to the wonderful invention known as Netflix I saw Mad Dog Morgan (RIP Dennis Hopper) and finally saw Patrick after first seeing the trailer back in 2000 on a vhs copy of The Hills Have Eyes. Also featured on that same vhs was The Cheerleaders, but that's not Ozploitation. Just sleazy Americana.)

Razorback I saw back in 2003, and loved it, and need to pick up the Warner Archive release since it's in widescreen.

Dead End Drive-In I got on a double feature dvd back in 2008. Great car action there.

I really want to see Alvin Purple and Stork. Those need to be released over here in region 1 STAT!

Dead End Drive-In, Lost Weekend and Road Games are some of the few available on R1 DVD that I haven't seen yet.

Road Games. I forgot to mention I've seen that one as well. REALLY slow, but not in a bad way. It helps a lot. Just like with Patrick. The slow pace actually helps to increase the tension.

I need to pick up the dvd.

Dead End Drive-In is on a double feature dvd with Deodato's Cut And Run. Pretty good double feature too.

Nightmares (1980): The movies sells it as a slasher rip-off, but it's just as much a rip-off of Italian Gialli. Not a good movie, but perfectly odd. The gore isn't that graphic, more like lots of fake blood slathered on the actors, but there's a lot of nudity.

Chain Reaction (1979): Slightly disappointing as an action movie, but the car chases are strong, and the story and characters are more complex than the subgenre norm.

Howling III started off amazing. Great soundtrack. Gets kind of slow towards the end.

I absolutely loved "Long Weekend."
I dug "Patrick."
I thought "Road Games" was kind of all right.
I blind bought "Razorback" and it was a rare blind buy that met with my expectations.
I can't say I loved "Stone."
I got "Turkey Shoot" from Netflix, but the DVD was glitchy. I never got to finish it. I liked what I saw, though. I need to give it another look.

I'd give my right arm for R1 versions of "The Man From Hong Kong" and "The Day After Halloween."

I just blind bought The Man From Hong Kong, I'm pretty excited to give it a whirl.

I had to look it up right now, but Nightmares is the same movie I saw on vhs a few years ago called Stage Fright. I remember it being pretty good, and yeah, there is TONS of nudity in it. Spot on saying it's a ripoff of Italian Gialli. If it hadn't been for the Australian accents, I would have mistaken it for a Giallo movie.

I wonder if the alternate title, Stage Fright, influenced Soavi's '87 movie's plot and title as well?

The Italians ripped off Patrick with Patrick Still Lives (which is in my Netflix queue), so why not that one? Just without the multiple deaths by glass.

I was about to give my thoughts on DEAD END DRIVE-IN in the horror thread, but it's not even remotely a horror film. Man, I miss the 80's. Well, I barely remember most of the 80's - having been a wittle kid and all - but I miss the sensibilities in film. What a bizarre concept for a film this was. If they made it now it would be too knowing of its weirdness.

ROAD GAMES really surprised me. I really really liked that film. I agree with its slowness in a good way. I'm frankly surprised this isn't a film more film nerds love and talk about. Unlike say, DISTURBIA, it took the REAR WINDOW model and found a great new home for it. Anyone who has even taken a road trip knows what it is like to keep seeing the same cars on your journey. Perfect setting for a REAR WINDOW story.

Can't wait to hear what your thoughts are on the film.

I just found a copy of Road Games, but the used place knew it was out of print, so it was $25. Back to Netflix I guess.

Yeah, that one makes no sense. Of all the things to rip-off with a fakequel...PATRICK!? That said, PATRICK STILL LIVES is really, really sleazy and well worth the watch.

Rene it is Stage Fright, indeed, that's even the title the print I watched had on it. It doesn't have much in common with Soavi's film though, I think that it was trying to be Tenebre and Opera over everything else.

And Patrick Still Lives is, indeed, uber-sleaze.

Anyone seen the Australian SF film, The Time Guardian? Not really ozploitation, but worth a look.
Man, I passed over a 6 dollar copy of Road Games a BUNCH of times at the Hastings I would frequent before it closed down in February. If I had known it was going for so much, I would have snatched it up quickly. Next time I see it elsewhere, if I see it, it's mine.

I just returned my latest Netflix rental, Equus (damn great/bizarre movie). I think I'll be moving Patrick Still Lives up in my Netflix queue.

I saw a used copy of Road Games the other day. IT WAS $30!!
I loved Turkey Shoot, Patrick was an interetsing spin and while I enjoyed the so-tame-it-was-quaint Road Games, Netflix was plenty for me on that one. But whatever the hell the one was with the woman tied to the front of the vehicle? I never found that one.

Fair Game. It was pretty good. Basically it's I Spit On Your Grave minus rape, plus poaching and women tied to trucks naked.
Yeah, that one is another one I'd like to check out. It looks so insane. Much like lots of the greatness that is Ozploitation.

$30 for Road Games? That's insane!

Went through some trouble to acquire NEXT OF KIN and I gotta say I'm a bit let down. I'd heard it labeled the Australian SHINING and it's not. Some cool moments and music cues, but otherwise a pretty standard whodunnit.

Just watched Lady, Stay Dead. It's not worth a whole lot, and plays a lot off stuff like Maniac, and other disturbing films where out protagonist is a psycho killer.

PATRICK was (then) the highest grossing film in Italy. Hence the Italian-produced pseudo-sequel.

Just finished my review copy of Severin's BMX Bandits Blu-ray. Not a great movie, but it features gorgeous photography, and some really clever dialog. The Blu-ray looks way better than expected too. Severin needs to stick to this whole Blu-ray thing, they keep defying expectations.
