A huge sinkhole caused by tropical storm Agatha, in Guatemala City, on Monday, May 31. A violent storm that whalloped Central America over the weekend killed more than 100 people and left a swath of destruction, officials said Monday. Tropical Storm Agatha, the first in a season of tempests that annually strikes the region, was especially brutal in Guatemala, where mudslides proved deadly.

has happened before, like in 2007

February 26, 2007—After rumbling for weeks, part of a poor Guatemala City neighborhood plummeted some 30 stories into the Earth on Friday.

The reportedly 330-foot-deep (100-meter-deep) sinkhole swallowed about a dozen homes and is so far blamed in the deaths of three people—two teenagers, found floating in torrent of sewage, and their father, who was pulled from the chasm.

Props for going for the Morloks reference and not the RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER reference.

Christ, I briefly glanced at that top picture on my papers website this morning and assumed it had been photoshopped.

Holy fucking shit.

'Crab people' would have also been acceptable.

I can't believe that top picture isn't fake. Unbelievable.
That's pretty incredible. But how the fuck does something like that happen?

Probably just a gigantic sinkhole. A relatively thin layer of earth above an underground cavern. Enough water weakens the earth, it collapses, bingo, instant hellmouth.

Wow, insane. Count me in as someone who almost thought the first pic was photoshopped.

Scary shit.

The first thing I thought of were the Tripods from Spielberg's WotW. Those photos are amazing.

Drat! It was posted before I could get to it! Yes, this is incredible and that photo is pretty jaw dropping.

It's crazy how much they look like set pieces from a Fantasic Four/Mole Man movie.

Nice to see we avaoid a "Gears of War" reference here.

Nice to see that Guatemala City is now raking in cash as a sandworm vacation spot.

It's amazing and scary-looking, but damn does the first pic look photoshopped... I know it's real, but still.

That looks like Nero time travellled for some deep-drill action.

The first thing that came to mind (Besides the thought that I too thought this had to be Photoshopped) was one of Spielberg's tripods crawling out of that hole.

Come to think of it, they just released War of the Worlds on Blu-Ray... Coincidence???!

I like how the rest of the roads show how they are completely unable to handle the smallest of potholes.
