Strontium Dog

After years of reading this on and off in 2000ad, I finally bought all of the SEARCH/DESTROY CASEFILES. This is basically a future Western and it's a lot of fun. You get a ton of wacky aliens, madcap action and bounty hunting gadgets. If Hollywood really wants to make "Western's with a twist" this should be it. The premise:

Quote:
Late 22nd century. After the Atomic Wars of 2150, many survivors were warped by the Strontium 90 fallout. These 'mutants' became a vicitmized underclass, and the only job open to them was bounty hunting. One such STRONTIUM DOG is Johnny Alpha, partnered with his Viking buddy Wulf Sternhammer.
Alpha's a "best there is" type who does whatever it takes to get the job done, but he's also an ex-freedom fighter who fought for Mutant rights. Wulf is the "Ja, Ja...." muscle who smashes people with a giant mallet. THE GRONK is a timid alien medic who shows up in some of the earlier stories. He was phased out later on.

I just finished the first volume. THE SHICKLGRUBER GRAB (a bunch of Strontium Dogs race to collect a million cred 'timejob' bounty on Adolf Hitler) and the follow-up MUTIE'S LUCK (Johnny and Wulf in a casino) were my personal favorites.

Also, anyone know if there's any Durham Red TPBs out there?

Here's a list of all the 2000ad trades in print:

My favorite supporting Strontium Dog has to be MIDDENFACE MCNULTY. I like translating his Scottish accent dialogue.

Started getting into 2000AD a couple of months ago (bought the hardbound "best of") and Strontium Dog is one of my favorite parts. American pre-code comics, EC Comics and similar ilk, are my absolute favorite comics, and 2000AD feels like what EC's Weird Science comic would've been like if it'd survived to the 80s.

Volume 2 starts with the Johnny Alpha origin story PORTRAIT OF A MUTANT. That's also one of my favorites. You get Johnny fighting in the Mutant Revolution, over the top evil villain Nelson B. Kreelman and a ton of weird mutants (the torso from newcastle!).

"After seeing my father's laws at work, there's only one thing I want to do-
SMASH HIM AND HIS RULE OF HATE!"

This comic really gets on a roll in Volume Two.
After 'Portrait of a Mutant' you get

-THE MOSES INCIDENT:
After inadvertently killing a boy during a shootout, a grief stricken Johnny tries to bring the kid back to life.

-THE KILLING:
Johnny and Wulf enter a 95 man 'death ritual' on an alien world. Last man standing gets a fortune, but Johnny and Wulf are there to collect bounties on all the fugitives who are participating.

This week a new Strontium Dog story called "The Life and Death of Johnny Alpha" starts up in 2000AD.
It follows up on the controversial FINAL SOLUTION story that came out years ago.

As for the Agency Files, I'm currently in the middle of Volume 3.
MAX BUBBA and RAGE are the standout stories in this one.
