Penguin Chudsters

Okay guys, this is my last attempt at a technology thread after the last couple I posted crashed and burned! I seem to have detected some nix users around the boards, and I thought maybe we could consolidate and chat a little.

So, do you use unix or linux on any machines in your home? Work? If so, what unix versions or linux distros? Do you have a stance on open source? Penguin warrior, or casual linux user? Blobs vs. freedom, linux will save the world/is totally irrelevant in today's market, etc, etc.

What is a Chudster?

Oh yeah, but you understood the rest of that. Yeah right.

Chudster is a name for someone who uses CHUD. I've used it myself when referring to the Chewers of the board.

PS: SM,

I felt bad for not commenting on your tech threads but I feel out of my depth and don't want to comment unless I have something to add to the conversation

No prob! I'm not hurt over it. Well, maybe a little. *sniffle*

But yeah, if people have no interest, I guess I'd prefer silence to having people comment just to tell me what a huge nerd I am. Things could be worse!

They seem interesting, so I'm sure someone will have something to say in 'em at some point. People on CHUD are usually very insightful, so even just one reply on CHUD is probably better than 10 (100?) replies on some other site.

I usually don't talk about tech unless I have a specific question about some device I own.

Chewer (as in Chewer Tech, the forum you are in) is the preferred nomenclature round these parts. Just FYI.

Diva,

FYI: I am sure he knows that. But just as we Americans like to be called... Americans.. it can be cool to change it up and call ourselves "Yankees" too.

CHUDster is just an alternate version of Chewer that means the same thing. It's not intended to replace Nick's preferred term in the big dictionary of CHUD

I apologize.

No worries. Just a pet peeve of mine. My post was mean to inform, not chastise.

I prefer "Chudaroonies".

Hey well at least I got some replies. Agent Z, I believe your endorsement of "Chudaroonies" might be against the Chudstitution. That is to say, it's unchudstitutional.

I use Linux off and on. I used to duel boot and it's how I learned how to rudimentary code. I can't say that I'm a die-hard fan of it, but I prefer it to most offerings.

Also, it's really easy to teach the principles of Linux to younger kids. It's such a shame that most elementary/middle schools don't try to break out of the Windows/MAC chokehold.

Yeah, I've used a large majority of the various flavors of linux/unix out there for personal use and work use.

My favorites are Gentoo, Ubuntu, Knoppix, and Centos.

I'm fairly familiar with the guts of how everything works in nix operating systems. However don't ask me to compile kernels.

I actually did a research paper on how educational institutions could really cut costs by implementing more open source, including linux.

This school uses almost exclusively linux in big parts of its districts. I even got to exchange e-mails with the administrator for the project. He said that they implemented an entire high school for $30,000 (145 machines), and that using microsoft would have cost them around $145,000. Pretty crazy stuff.

That's a pretty wide variety! I'm basically familiar with Debian based Ubuntu workings. I've played around with a SLES that my dad built, but I didn't like it.

Compiling is the pits, I'm glad they have all these live installation versions now.

EDIT: My brain is on vacation today.
