The Final Countdown (1980)

BBC2 promised me this film was a modern Aircraft Career commanded by Kirk Douglas and Martin Sheen vs. the Japanese at Pearl Harbour in 1941. How could this not be good?

I don't think I have ever been so disappointed in my life. Most of the acting was dire and even Douglas seemed to be in it for the pay check Save Charles Durning's Senator Chapman there was not a single good performance.

But the worst thing was the whole film is one giant cocktease. When they arrive in the past the chat for about 5 minutes on the dangers of interfering with the past, then decide sod it lets attack the Japanese. But just before they can they all magically transported back to the future.

Huge plot inconsistencies, like for example the planes being miles away but still being transported back with them, yet the one guy stuck on an island not far away getting trapped in the past. No explanation is given as to what happened and there seemed to be no real purpose for it.

As you can probably guess I hated this film.

11-year old not-knowing-any-better me thought this was the coolest thing ever. I'd watch it on HBO over and over again, especially the "Splash the Zeros" scene. And at the time, the ending was the greatest mindfuck ever. Only with age and hindsight did I come to realize that that sort of ending had been done dozens of times before, and better. And geez if this film isn't Navy porn. The only thing missing is a Nimitz cumshot. Obviously they had to toss the Navy a bone to get permission to film on the ship, but it gets a little ridiculous sometimes.

Still love John Scott's score though, especially over the reveal at the end. And the main theme played background for tons of Crimson Skies online matches.

It does almost out do Top Gun in the Navy love area and that is saying something.

Still not sold on the ending, I think if you have comitted to a big showdown between the Nimitz and the Japs then you should follow it through. Otherwise it renders the whole film pointless.

They were playing with the "some things MUST happen" idea of time travel, which I can sort of buy into. But it does seem like the whole incident happened simply to make sure Charles Durning dies and to get James Farentino stuck in the past.
