Question for horror, gore, etc. fans

Thread Starter
This is probably the first time I post here. So forgive my ignorance.

This past weekend I went to watch the new TCM. I liked it. Found some scenes disturbing, but I managed.

But, a lot of the people I saw it with seemed to get a kick or a rush out of watching the gore, the violence, and actually cheered Leatherface as he went around doing his stuff. Some were upset Biel's character made it away. They would yell things like "kill her!!! I say, kill her!

Are all these mini-Ed Geins isolated cases or do most horror/gore fans actually get a kick out of watching this?
I don't know if it makes me a psycho, but I am also mad that Biel's character didn't get killed. I hated her character. Love the flick though.
I havn't seen it, so thanks for the spoiler alert!

Don't worry, not to bad of a spoiler since I have seen the first one, and know the story.
well you wouldn't be much of a horror/gore fan if you didn't get a kick out of horror and gore
post #5 of 31
It's a strange thing, the love for gore and horror. I personally, while not 100% liking to get scared (I'm more sadistic than I am masochistic when it comes to horror, one reason I think I dug HO1KC so much), am one who enjoys seeing the bodily fluids spraying from a fresh slash of a blade or gunshot wound. Why? I have no idea.

But, it's pretty typical of horror fans, man. Don't worry about it (if you are ). And us horror geeks (and kinda in general movie fans) also have this affinity for the death of characters we don't like, and most people don't like the main human/good guy/victim characters of these kinda (as my dad puts it) "diminishing cast" films.

I think that the killing of a main character gives a film a more realistic feel in that it doesn't make the viewer feel as if they have just sat 2 hours to be set-up for a feel-good ending ...

This is horror we are talking about after all, and the way a film ends is ( for me ) the most important aspect in that it will determine what you feel after you have left ...

In other words, being scared for a short time while sitting there only to walk out feeling chipper and happy isn't not what I look for in a film ...
I stop short of cheering on the bad guys, but otherwise I definitely enjoy watching fake gore, cartoonish, unrealistic, Itchy & Scratchy violence, etc.

It's when you get a kick out of seeing the REAL stuff that you wanna start worrying. Or when you get a kick out of hearing that some magician nearly got killed by a tiger.

SPOILERS OF VARIOUS MOVIES ALERT!!!!!!

That is exactely what I was trying to explain to someone today. House had a great ending cause they all died. As Boys said it's a horror movie so it should be horrifying all the way through. It really bothers me that most recent horror movies and the greater majority of all of them always feel the need to have at least one survivor or a couple.(As in guy and girl meet up and survive a terrifying experience then fall in love) Why? In some cases you gotta set up a sequel, fine. Sometimes though it feels like the filmmakers started to feel guilty about what they had just done for the last 80 minutes and feel that having people survive to live happily ever after is redeeming or something. Kill 'em all I say. 28 Days Later would have been much better had they all been killed I think.

Seeing people get dismembered, tortured, eaten, etc. is fun.

Ya gotta love it!

But as has been said if you've seen the first one then you'd know how it ended adn can you really call yourself a slasherfan and not have seen the original?

PS why should we have to answer to you, I'm sick of these type of questions!!!

No one is making you. It's bloody simple really, if you don't like the question or thread topic, don't post.

Actually, thanks for spoiling House of 1000 Corpses and 28 Days Later too.

SOME OF US DONT SEE EVERY FILM IN THE THEATERS.

Least give folks a year after its wide theatrical release before you spurt things out...

(The only movie I want spoiled for me is Episode 3 of Star Wars, and well, after Attack of the Clones can you really blame me? Plus I run a Star Wars tabletop RPG game and I need the info so I know what I can get away with in my game and not break continuity till I feel like it. Which I will do. Let's just say Empire Strikes Back's events aren't gonna play out the same in my campaign..)

Anyhow, I don't cheer the blood and guts in a horror movie, generally because these things should be bad and umm.. HORRIFYING. (Now Kill Bill? Totally different. I was giggling like a Japanese Schoolgirl constantly...)

I don't watch it for the kills, I watch horror for the stories, which tend to (DUH!) be dark and stuff, generally of a Dark Fantasy nature. I like when the characters are interesting, and the tales are too. Its why Romero's Dead films are so kickass. Its not the gore. Hell, I think you could pretty much take most of the gore OUT of those movies and they would still be outstanding films.... (Note I said most, not all. And I aint dissin Savini here cuz those effects and makeup are amazing, and hold up really well today, unlike a certain floppy eared CGI creature who was used for little more than fart jokes I shall not name..)
But you never know if it's going to be the same as hte original or not. I read this movie is very different from the original, of course I've seen the original but you never know what could be differnt!!!!!
PS I never go to AICN, CC is da best place to be!!!
I prefer horror films with genuine scares and creepy atmosphere over just gross-out flicks (a combination of both is pure perfection though ) and I really can't be considered a "gorehound", but I don't see anything wrong with liking gore and I don't think there is anything wrong with someone who enjoys gory movies. Hell, I'm getting ready to marry an absolute gorehound. It is just a movie after all. I really like the campy, over the top gore, but the ultra realistic...not so much. Admittedly, I'm a sucker for exploding head scenes though (I think any and every movie would benefit greatly from an exploding head scene), but that doesn't mean I want to see someone's head explode at the grocery store or something. There is a clearly defined line between fiction and reality. I don't even really see anything wrong with the people who go to places like consumption junction or rotten.com to see the real thing. As long as they don't want to cause that kind of injury to other people, they are fine. Different people have different fascinations is all.

When all is said and done, it all comes down to the fact that it is fiction...a movie...it's meant to be entertaining. You really shouldn't judge people because they enjoy it. I could judge people who likes tear jerkers in the same way. There must be something psychologically wrong with someone who watches a movie so that they can leave the theater feeling depressed, but meh...to each his own.

Sorry for the spoilers but it's damn near impossible to discuss anything without using some sort of example. I think House and Days have been discussed to death here and everywhere else though since they've been out especially Days with the rerelease of the movie with a different ending. Try and get out more. wink

I get a kick out of people that feel sorry for a guy that has stuck his head in a tigers mouth for the last twenty years and finally got bitten. WTF do people think when they do that shit? I'm just waiting for the Crocodile Hunter to get eaten and I'll laugh my ass off. People like that play with fire long enough they eventually get burned.
Yeah, cos if there's one thing I lack it's a sense of humor.

Like I said, I do enjoy fake, fictionalized violence. Stuff that I know isn't real. But if you find it enjoyable when a real life flesh and blood innocent human being gets harmed (no matter how tacky they may be or how much you think their show sucks), then I'm afraid you've lost a part of your humanity that you're never going to get back. I'm thankful I'm not that "thick skinned".
I don't like to see anyone get hurt but when they play with Bengal f'ing tigers at some point they got it coming. That's not innocent it's just stupid. Not that it's wrong that it concerned you.

I have to admit though I found it amusing. Maybe I'm an uncaring bastard but it's like when Evil Kineval would break a hundred bones for when trying to jump over 20 dump trucks or whatever. It's hard to feel sorry for someone like that.

No more derailing from me.

Laying on the melodramatic hand-wringing a bit thick, aren't we?

Ugh, I really just dont like her in real life also. Cant act worth crap. As for the standing up and cheering in the movies, dont think me weird or anything but I do that and so do all of my friends. We did it on Freddy vs Jason (which is understandable cuz everyone did it) and other horror movies also. Its not cuz we're psycho or anything (well, atleast Im not) we just like it. Its fun in a way.
Well...
Movies (Horror,Romance,Action,etc are just that...Movies!
Some folks like "killers"... Some like "Vietnam-vet green berets"...LMAO

The stuff in movies is mostly fictional!
Folks see movies to be entertained... It wouldn't too entertaining if directors made films on "every-day stuff" happening, now would it!?! LOL!
Sorry for the "bare-bones" response... LOL!!

Be safe

It varies for me. Really depends on the movie. I appreciate gore if done well, but there are films where I don't think the tone supports gore. The Ring didn't need gore and would have been distracting with it, but a film like Final Destination 2 is all about the gross out.
Same goes with rooting for the villian. Make a movie where I give a shit about the characters and I want to see them make it through to the end. Give me a Friday the 13th movie and I'm hoping Jason hacks the shit out of everyone in the most disgusting ways possible. That's the whole reason I'm there. I know what I'm getting and what the puspose of the film is.
I don't think that's sick, it's just knowing what you're walking into. Some horror films are just there for the kill.
I personally wasn't rooting for Leatherface during the remake. It was disturbing and serious and I just wasn't feeling rah rah psycho on this one. House of 100 Corpses though? I wanted all those idiots to get butchered.
no melodrama, simply laying out facts.

That german magician getting attacked by a tiger on the Simpsons is pretty amusing.

That german magician getting attacked by a Tiger in real life is only funny if you're sick in the head and/or the Kevin Dillon character in Platoon.
Hmmm......

I don't want people to ever get hurt. Don't want people to be mauled, or brutalised. Don't want that old lady to step in front of that train, nor that dumb ass to blow his brains out at a board meeting.

But ya know what? If it DOES happen, if they DO do it, then I want to see it.

I would never cause that harm, and woudl do everything in my power to try to help them avoid it if I could. But if it is going to happen, or already has happened, then call me sick for finding it fascinating to watch it. Maybe not be 'entertained' per se, but at least interested in it enough to want to see it.

"Sick in the head"? Because of my sense of humor? Are you Fred Phelps or something? Seriously, get some thicker skin or a sense of perspective.

And, for the record, last night I told my sweet old ultra-conservative grandma about my Halloween costume (I'm going as Roy, my girlfriend as the tiger), and she thought it was hilarious. Same goes for *all* of my friends. So you'd better stay away from Kansas, Adam. WE'RE ALL SICK IN THE HEAD HERE.
"Fred Phelps"? Try naming someone I've actually heard of next time you throw this thicker skin nonsense at me.

Now run along, I'm sure there's some genuine human suffering that you could be enjoying on one of those bookmarked deathpics websites.

Good comeback, man.

Frankly, it bores me, pretty much. If the movie's no good, I don't care if you've got the folks at Heinz working double-shifts to keep the red stuff flowing; it's just a waste of time.
