Great games you never played (and other assorted gaming travesties)

I just got me thinking that I have bought on steam or on sales game Ive never played yet for a long time, most of them really well received and popular ones.
Even further, Ive realized there's at least a handful of great games I should had played because of my preferences and love for a genre but never did for some reason. I cant be alone on this....from a "available time" POV, i think its impossible for anyone to actually play all the games you have bought/loved to the end.
Just to start: I consider myself a classic/pc rpg enthusiast.
Ive never played any of the Baldur's Gate games (im going to get hang out to dry, arent ?).

NONE of the LucasArts adventure games (though I rented Maniac Mansion for NES once), none of the Phantasy Star games, Banjo-Kazooie, Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, and Half-Life 1.
Psychonauts, Crimson Skies, Oddworld, Halo 1 or 2.

Pretty much anything that was an XBOX exclusive circa 2001-2005

Oh man...you missed out on some great ones. Day of the Tentacle, any of the Monkey Island games, Grim Fandango, Loom, Sam & Max Hit The Road, The Dig.

Damn, just typing out that list brought back some serious nostalgia of those games.

Swap Monkey Island for Indiana Jones And The Fate of Atlantis and that's my list as well.

That said, I also suffer from game sickness so can't play any first person games. As a consequence I've missed out on some of the biggies of that style like Half-Life 2 and all the Halo's, Quakes and Dooms.

I must have installed and played the tutorial of No One Lives Forever about four times, and for some reason just never finished it.
I have never played Portal or a Call of Duty Game.
I second the Lucasarts games. With all this talk of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis I might see how cheap it is on steam.
I've tried so many times to play the original Metroid more than 30 seconds, and I've come to the conclusion almighty Christ himself doesn't want me doing it.
Those that never played Grim Fandango need to visit El Marrow either by playing the freaking game or a shotgun to the forehead.

It's hard as fuck. I get about ten minutes in and have to put down the controller.
I've never played Deus Ex or Metal Gear Solid 4. Those are just off the top of my head. There's plenty more.

Just get Zero Mission for GBA. It's excellent. Don't even attempt to play Metroid 2. That shit is fuck.
Anything PS2 exclusive. Seriously. Never owned one. Never knew anyone who owned one.
Sin and Punishment, never got a...US release. That will be rectified in...3 weeks when...Sin and Punishment 2 arrives, for the Wii!

Already beat that one. Still feel like I need to give the original its due.

Funny enough, Metroid 2 was the first one I played. It was indeed balls, but I soldiered through to the end, nonetheless.

And then I sold the fuck out of it to buy a Ninja Turtles game.
I've never played a 3D Zelda game.

Isn't the first Sin & Punishment on WiiWare now?

Anyway, I love the Metroid Prime games to death, but I've never played any of the 2D Metroids, aside from getting my ass kicked early on when attempting to play the virtual console version of Super Metroid.

If you played Link to the past you've already played the best one.

Awesome series of photos Scott! I've never played any of the Metal Gears.. I tried to play Final Fantasy 7 but did not care for it. I enjoyed 8 though.

Never played a 3D Zelda as well, due to not owning a N64, Gamecube or Wii.
I never finished Warcraft III, System Shock (the first one), the second Syndicate or Psychonauts. I never finished Elder Scrolls: Oblivion as well.
Never played Psychonauts either. I have it on Steam, but I haven't made my way around to it. I still have to play Beyond Good and Evil, but with a sequel coming out I'm almost certain the original will be released as an XBLA title.

Wow...I thought that I was the ONLY person who suffered from this. I'll never forget getting motion sick and throwing up after watching a friend buzz through 'Quake' one day.

So yeah...I've missed all of those same games, Rain Dog. It's frustrating, isn't it?
I've never played "Grand Theft Auto" or any of its sequels.

Fun fact: The first (two) pictures are the IGN staff's reactions to the first footage shown for The Wind Waker at E3.

Metroid really really really shows its age now and is probably not worth playing anymore. Although it does kind of have the best atmosphere out of the series, albeit accidentally. The archaic difficulty and design really makes you feel stranded in an alien base.

Yeah, I haven't played MGS past the first half of MGS2 or so. I've been curious to play MGS3 for a long time.
Looking back on them all, I think that Wind Waker is actually my favorite 3D Zelda title. It pulls off the cel-shaded look perfectly, resulting in a game with a lot of character. I still love the different expressions on toon Link's face.
I've heard that argument about Metroid 2 since the screen doesn't reveal much and it's in black and white. It's still not very good.

You should definitely go play MGS3. You can take or leave MGS4, but 3 is a joy to play. And if you can find the GBC MGS, get it.

I haven't seen anyone take much offense to some of the games we're missing out on, which I think is what ryoken wanted out of this thread. Nothing's been all that egregious just yet, though if someone says they have never played Super Mario Bros. I'm going to find where they live, shit in their laptop and close it.
Symphony of the Night
Any of the God of War games

I would definitely recommend MGS3. It was extremely well done especially after the disappointment that was MGS2. Make sure you pick up the Subsistence edition for the fully 3D camera.
any PS3 only game.
The first Zelda games
Goldeneye

Actually, the thread's origin came from my realization that I have bough WAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY too many games, a lot of which I'll never finish in my lifetime (damn you, Steam sales!).
More than having people yell "BURN IN HELL; YOU HERETIC!", I wanted the thread to showcase our taste in games and what games some of us have missed on or never gave a chance.
However, now things will get bad....I HATED the original NES Double Dragon as a kid, and so did my brother; our dad brought the game for us from a US trip and we were all (not at dad, god bless him) "We should have specified it was Double Dragon II we wanted, dammit".
Also, I stll hold the belief that "Blades of Steel" is the best damn hockey videogame ever made.
Also, I never liked NBA Jam, but I LOVED "ArchRivals".
Guess i liked sport games were you could be a dick to the other player.
Polygon_Wizard, Yeah...Now, Sin and Punishment is on Wii ware. The game came out in...The 90's. Dave Halverson, even made it the cover of one of his mags, either...Gamers Republic, or Die Hard Game Fan.

Them there is fightin' words. You could be more of a dick in Arch Rivals, but the core gameplay was suck.

Meanwhile, any time I come across an NBA Jam cabinet these days, without fail, 4 quarters are going into that machine.
Plus DJ Jazzy Jeff is an unlockable character, which has got to count for something. I occasionally play Arch Rivals on my PSP wishing it was NBA Jam. I don't care how awesome the Wii remake is, I'm going to clutch my copy of Jam TE with dear life.

I have not played the first Super Mario Bros....in this decade.

Never played the System Shocks or Deus Ex games nor Planescape: Torment.

And wait, wait, wait... they're making another Beyond Good and Evil!?!?!?!?!?!

There's a teaser floating around the web of BGE 2, though I wouldn't expect to see it at E3 next week. It sounds like a passion project for Ubisoft and not a guaranteed moneymaker like Assassin's Creed. It may be a while before we see any more of it.

Im pretty sure Michael Ancel said "Either you let me make BG&E 2 , or you can forget about any more Rabbids games".
I am pretty sad for people who never played the LucasArts adventure games, frankly. They're still great to play now and all, but, it was really a moment in time, you know? The "retro" factor is a little distracting now.

I have yet to touch Modern Warfare 2 or Gears of War 2, or Halo 3, and honestly my time spent on all three franchises collectively is probably about three hours. In fact, I've been trying to think of a term for when a bro-ish acquaintance implores you to buy CoD/Gears/Halo so you can play online together, dude.
Does the same go for Sam and Max? I never played any of those games either.

There's nothing wrong with playing any of those shooters unless that's all you play. Having a full team of friends on Modern Warfare 2 is pretty awesome.
I'm not even gonna try and put together a list of PC games I've never played. We'll be here all day.

Only the original. The Telltale games are certainly fun and worthwhile but not instant classics or anything. Although there was a joke about Steve Wozniak in the first season that I'm still laughing about.

As for the shooters, I do in fact mean people who have their copy of MW2 glued to their DVD tray. I'm not knocking the games in general. It just amuses/half-annoys me when I mention owning a 360 and someone inevitably recommends the most popular game in the world to me. "Call.. of.. Duty, you say? Lemme write this down."
Speaking of super-popular games, I have never played World of Warcraft. Not that I really care. I've just never been able to justify the cost of playing MMOs to myself. I'm sure I would probably enjoy WoW for a while, but I've always felt that MMOs would quickly begin to feel like a chore for me (ie. I'm paying for this so I have to keep playing it).

Although my little brother was obsessed with them, I never played either of the Diablos.

Yeah, Sam and Max Hit The Road is one of my alltime faves.

Good way to kill a few hours or days.

There are a ton of imitators, and WoW borrows pretty heavily from it, but they are worth checking out if you've never played a similar game before. If only to marvel at the insidious design decisions that keep you playing for three hours longer than you intended.

I imagine the original is ug-ly on modern widescreen monitors, but Diablo II was recently patched with some kind of WS support, and goes allll the way up to 800x600 with the expansion!

Also, the Tristram theme (all over the original but shows up in Diablo II as well) is maybe the most perfect mood-setting video game music ever.

I don't even consider it a "game" in the traditional sense. It's like a social club where you play games.

I had Macs growing up, so other than Myst, I'm pretty barren in the post-floppy PC era.

Never played WoW... have watched a friend play but I just don't find it appealing.

Never beat Zelda Ocarina of Time, but I have played a good bit of it.
Never beat Zelda Twilight Princess... I got it when it came out on gamecube, and still haven't gotten back around to playing it. Dungeons in that game are long man...
I have played through and beat Wind Waker though. It was fun, just way too easy. My favorite Zelda is definitely LttP, which I have played through numerous times.

No Call of Duties
Missed out on a LOT of PC gaming

Never beaten the first Resident Evil... nor the 5th. All the other ones in the main series I have played through though (none of that deadaim and similar ones though).

I wonder if there is anyone here who has never played a Street Fighter game?

You got it right. Twilight Princess runs out of steam quickly and if you have played Link to the Past, then you've played Ocarina. Wind Waker on the other hand is a fairly unique experience and one that I'd put above either of those games.

I've never finished a Resident Evil game either. I'm almost done with 4 but I'm low on ammo and fuuuuuuuck those water monsters.

I've never played World of Warcraft, or any of the Warcraft games honestly. Never played any of the Diablo games either. Never played either of the Gears of War games.
