Nick is thrilled, concerned, and critical.

Never really found that the show was trying to build a "mythology" related to the Crowder family. They were just the menace setting the season's overall plot in motion. If it wasn't for those characters you wouldn't have had as enjoyable a finale as the show pulled off tonight.

If Justified can continue next year mixing an engaging season-arc with quality one-shot episodes then it'll maintain as one of the best shows going.

The thing is that the mix got lost halfway through the season. It switched from wanted guy from the week AND Crowder family to just the Crowder's. And that was great, granted. The cast made it work and holy shit the blood spilled on the last episode.

But i do wish they'd keep the balance a bit better. Those first episodes were great stuff.

Among the various things about this series that amaze me are the fact that, following the end of Deadwood, I was thinking that Olyphant had latched onto that great, iconic role that few actors ever get, and which almost never come a second time.

And here he is, a couple years' later, with one that's maybe even better.

It didn't get lost at all. The last 3 episodes dealt with the Crowder family storyline exclusively and that's because that was the storyline that needed to be wrapped up. Most of the middle episodes were light on Crowderness. You had the hostage situation, Raylan helping out his ex-wife's husband against Jere Burns, and then the great turn by Stephen Root as the gun crazy judge.

I've never watched this show, but I'm hoping all of TheCatfishCommander's posts are about how great Timothy Olyphant would be as Clark Kent.

On another message board I go to, to hear them tell it, you would think the show went from totally episodic (and not that great) in the first half of the season to completely serialized (and awesome) in the latter half. I have no idea what show those folks were watching, but it seems to be a common theme out there that the show totally changed gears and improved itself as it went on; whereas I feel like, even if the focus shifted somewhat, the quality was consistent throughout.

I completely agree. I think Nick is a little off base, this show has already found its footing completely, and (as I already mentioned in the Justified thread), did so with a spectacular mission statement in the Alan Ruck episode. I thought it was excellent television before that, but that one was where it hit its stride, and the character of Raylan became an icon.

I mean, it's obvious they originally wanted more for his co workers to do, as I've mentioned, the female coworker who was so good in the Ruck episode hasn't been seen since, I think.

I don't know what happened with the female marshal. Gut tells me she was axed.

Kinda sucks, she had some nice lines with Raylan. And there was some drama to be mined there with Raylan essentially jumping over her position in the office.

What are everyones thoughts on what's in store for Season 2? I dont really want to throw any spoilers out there for anyone who has yet to enjoy the experience that is Justified.

and Scott, how awesome would that be?
