Superhero Shortlist

Inspired by this article - okay, I ripped it off - I thought we Chewers should maybe add our $0.02 about the actors who'd be well-suited to play superheroes, supervillains or supporting characters.

And rather than turn this into a list thread, maybe give a reason or two for your choices.

To kick off, if a DAREDEVIL remake/reboot actually happens, I'd like to nominate Christian Slater as Bullseye. This probably has a bit to do with me rewatching TRUE ROMANCE the other day but I liked the sardonic style Slater displayed in his best work and I think it'd be a good fit for The Man Without Fear's nemesis.

Have at it, people!

Does this thread give me a chance to beat the "Billy Crudup as Dr. Strange, Sorcerer Supreme" drum one more time? Yes, yes it does.

I always thought Ryan Reynolds would have made a perfect Wally West Flash rather than Green Lantern, his great comic timing would have made the character sing.

After seeing Sullivan Stapleton in Animal Kingdom I reckon he'd be a great Nightwing, he'd have that great mixture of intensity and jocularity the character needs to balance.

I know I'm probably out on my own on this but I really see Anne Hathaway having both the physical beauty and screen presence to do a decent Wonder Woman (Kate Winslett's getting a bit old unfortunately).

I reckon Ben Foster could bring a really interesting zany-sociopathy to The Riddler without just making the character a poor mans Joker as so many other actors would.

My countries own Joel Edgerton could bring a wonderful gravitas crossed with tortured fury to a hook-handed Aquaman.

Matt Damon would also make a really fucking great Green Arrow, he'd have the physicality down but could also depict the characters political idealism and passion.

...and Hugo Weaving would simply have to be the voice of Gorilla Grodd.

(I'm DC's bitch I know, I make no apologies for this)

Michael J Fox circa. 1985 as Spider-Man
David Niven circa. 1967 as Alfred
Jack Nicholson circa. 1975 as the Joker
Robin Williams circa. 1982 as Wolverine
Tom Hanks circa. 1982 as Cyclops

BATMAN 1989 (In a perfect world)
Alec Baldwin as Batman
David Bowie as The Joker
Brian Dennehy as Commissioner Gordon

Howzabout Powers Boothe as Batman in Zack Snyder's DARK KNIGHT RETURNS? Perhaps that Hit-Girl actress could be Robin.

Oh, and (slightly off topic) James Marsden shoulda been Green Lantern

I kinda figured this was a thread of actual fanwank possibilities rather than a fantasy casting thread.

Exactly. The line between the two may be thin, but it's there. (Plus we have a Recast Your Favourite Movies thread for those kinds of shenanigans.) Thanks for keeping us honest, RD.

And here's my latest bit of fanwank: Eva Green and INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS' Daniel Bruhl as The Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver.

I would have given my left nut to see Cole Hauser turn up as Captain America. Failing that, and I don't think he's too old for this, I'd love to see him turn up as Flash Gordon. I know this is wankery, because we all know they will cast a twelve year old and sign him for thirty pictures, but I can dream.

I think he clearly has the physicality for the role, and I think he appropriates the Alex Raymond look as much as any modern actor- but truth is, I just love the guy. He's played way too many heels, and he's damn good at it. Sure, he was a hero in the blockbusting blockbustery blockbuster PAPARAZZI, but it would be just dandy if he was given a chance in a truly high profile flick.

Quick, somebody photoshop Hauser's face onto Sam Jones' Flash Gordon body, but not in a humorous manner, because I believe that's a clear violation of THE NEW RULES, and timeouts will be had.

I see Hanks as more of a Mr. Fantastic type.

I wanted to see Ben Browder as Cap and Jensen Ackles as GL (with Reynolds as the Flash), but that ship has sailed.

Matt Fox is the only actor I'll accept as Supes (directed by the Wachowskls).

A pumped up Nathan Fillion AKA Capt. Hammer (excuse my predictable fan-fave go-to) or Dwayne Johnson as Major Bummer!

Bruce Greenwood would've made a damn good Mr. Fantastic 10 years ago. Might not be too late.
Jon Hamm would had been a perfect Hal Jordan IMO.
Hell, make him bulk up, and he'd be a perfect Doc Savage.
I would love to see Paul Bettany as Planetary's Elijah Snow.
I would trade all "Underworld" movies to see Kate Beckinsale as Durham Red.
Emily Blunt as Modesty Blaise would be fantastic.
Finally, Tom Hardy as Judge Dredd.
Donald Glover as Spiderman, heh...what?
80's Bruce Willis would have been a great Plastic Man. With today's special effects, of course.
"Gun Fu" with Ken Leung as Cheng Bo Sen.
"Planetary" is almost too easy if we start with Bettany; toss in Emily Blunt and James Franco. And maybe Idris Elba as Chase.
"Empowered" with Kristin Bell in the title role.
Batman 1983

Tom Berenger as Batman
Peter Weller as the Joker
I'd love to see Sam Jaeger (currently on Parenthood as the stay-at-home dad) as Superman for the reboot coming up in 2012. Does he fit the criteria (i.e. American, unknown, etc.)? Fuck yeah. Will it happen? Highly doubtful.

I want to go to there yesterday!

As I understand it, he was actually on the list.

Paz Vega as Wonder Woman. Despite being in her 30's, which some may consider too old, Vega is, I think, a sexually intriguing choice because of the films she's made in the past. Wonder Woman to me is more than just some "hottie" in a star-spangled bodice or whatever, there should be a depth to the character's sexuality. Vega is talented, she's daring, she has presence, she's the proper height (5'8"), and speaking as a fan of the character, I always thought it would make sense for Wonder Woman to speak with a Mediterranean accent.

If Vega isn't a possibility, then my default is Jessica Biel (again, physically perfect). I like that she's invested a lot of energy into rising above her MAXIM cover girl status in an attempt to build a career that lasts. Provided the right people are put behind a WW film (they won't be), that's an energy the character will need to be successful.
I think Idris Elba has the physicality, the presence, and the regal bearing to be a great Black Panther.

While I liked the sheer weirdness and balls of casting John Krasinski as Captain America, he could be a great Hank Pym. Make him a SHIELD scientist who is working on a revolutionary technology that changes the size of things, he could great comic relief. His wife Janet Van Dyne could be the super-heroine of the family as The Wasp who uses his Pym particles to shrink(And somehow grow wings) and take from The Ultimates and make her asian. Grace Park, maybe.

Billy Cruddup could be a good Doctor Strange, but I see Julian McMahon as the arrogant and sarcastic sorceror.

Bradley Cooper could be a brilliant Green Arrow.

I really want Terry Crews as Luke Cage. As a former football player, he has the size and ability, but he also looks like a regular guy and he's a decent actor.
Harrison Ford or Michael Douglas for Elijah Snow, thank you very much.
I think a current, but thinner Val Kilmer would make a good Snow.

You may be onto something there. And to bring a Myers-esque quality to the thread, I submit this found art:

Bradley Cooper as Booster Gold and Ed Burns as Blue Beetle would be great.

Wonder Woman got her nails did.

It's been said, but Iron Fist and Luke Cage should most definitely be played by Scott Adkins and Michael Jai White.
I was watching the show Life the other day on Hulu, and I realized Damian Lewis would be perfect as The Riddler, if Nolan goes in the direction of having him be the guy chasing down Batman for the Gotham police. He has a kind of odd intensity, and an ability to project extreme calmness, with a barely detectable hint of instability which can rise to the surface in an instant.
Damien Lewis is an interesting choice for Riddler, actually. I've always thought of him as David Tennant, myself, but I can see how Lewis would fit better in Nolan's universe.

Also, Jon Hamm needs to play a villain in one of these movies, but I'd love to see him transition into films via an actual thriller or action flick with an original idea for adults.

Hamm would be a good Elijah Snow.

Maybe in like ten years. Or as Randall Dowling.

Its really too bad Ellis fumbles Planetary. The last meeting with The Four is just so dumb. Its kind of transparent that Ellis just wanted the damn thing done.
You take the core concept of Planetary and extend the mystery of Elijah Snow out, you have the next great sci-fi series. Warehouse 13 is basically Planetary Lite.
Anyone remember Wolf with Jack Nicholson? They NAILED Wolverine's hair in that movie, maybe unintentionally. I always though an in-his-prime Nicholson would have made a fantastic Wolverine.

Another Wolverine casting I'd always wished could have happened somehow was Clint Eastwood. I've always wondered if Logan was patterned after some of Clint's iconic tough guy portrayals...
Harvey Keitel was always the de facto Wolverine rumor in the early 90's, at least before everybody had the internets.

You'd have to have a pretty decently sized budget. You could do it as a trilogy of movies. Dennis Qaid as Elijah? He seems to have that gleam in his eye that Harrison Ford hasn't had in ages. Jakarta is tough to cast. Kate Beckinsale?

In his younger days, Steve Zahn would have been a great Drummer.

Ehh... I'll just say it. Neil Patrick Harris as Hank Pym.

Okay, that'd be genius. Especially if he was a mix of Hank Pym and Robert Kirkman's slacker Ant-Man(Who was a low level SHIELD agent that steals the suit).

Though that might be uncomfortable if they ever decide to make Hank hit Janet like he did in the comics.

Warts and all, I still love it....if only because of the reveal of who Dowling was working for.

Oh and if we're getting into pulp superheroes, Dwayne Johnson has to be Doc Savage.
Kovacs, I like your casting for...Power Man and Iron Fist. Who would you cast as...The Daughters Of The Dragon, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing?
After Kick Ass, Chloe Moretz as X-23, or the future Robin from Dark Knight Returns.

Ooo, who would be a good Dazzler?

His intro in X-MEN always reminded me of Philo.

Drives a truck, bare-knuckle fighting... that hair.
This isn't strictly superhero, but more just comics, but if they ever adapt Fables in any form within the next ten years, they kind of have to cast Josh Holloway as Bigby.
I've been fan-casting The Dark Night Returns for ages now. Moretz is a good call for Robin- she's got the Frank Miller Lip- although one might say she's already played the role.

I've always said Jeremy Irons for Old Joker, and I think he could still do it.

And, of course, Powers Boothe as the old Bruce Wayne. Zack Snyder would be great at capturing all of those FM splash pages, as well.

Hmmm, I was thinking Clint Eastwood for old Bruce Wayne.

Agree on Boothe, not so much on Zack.

My original pick for Bruce was Paul Newman circa 1990. I always thought Eastwood would make a brilliant cameo for Old Oliver-- and again, he could conceivably still pull it off.

Hmm, that Jeremy Irons as Joker call is pretty inspired. Dude's spent the last decade slumming in genre fare & I bet he'd have a ball with Mr. J.

While we're on Batman, how about Paul Giamatti as The Penguin?

I may be the only person who likes this idea, but I can see Elijah Wood as Hank Pym. Dunno why. Feel free to scoff.
