Do any of you know any good drink recipes that minimize the gross alcohol taste while maximizing the To' Up Factor (tm)? I'm particularly fond of slushies and milkshakes. If that helps.
Ok well here's the thing, when you get fucked up (and I mean FUCKED UP, not just buzzed or a little drunk) drinking a bunch of sweet stuff you're usually gonna pay for it by puking at the end of the night or having the worst hangover of your life the next day. The more sugar you take down with your drinks, the worse off you're gonna be.

So, if you truly want to go that route, you can go with the sweet creamy drinks that contain stuff like baileys irish cream and kahlua. Usually these mixed with some milk and vodka for extra kick are extremely drinkable and will get you where you need to be (especially if you're not really a drinker and have a really low tolerance).

Also, as others have suggested try Parrot Bay banana or pineapple rum mixed with a little orange juice or pineapple juice.

If you want to avoid hangovers, don't drink on an empty stomach (generally just don't skip a meal and then start drinking) and drink plenty of water afterwards if you can, before passing out.

Now, if you want to really drink learn to like normal mixed drinks... simple shit like vodka+cranberry, vodka (or rum) and orange juice (or pineapple juice or a mix of both), rum and coke (captain morgan spiced rum + coke is pretty damn good). A bay breeze (vodka+OJ+cranberry) is also a pretty tasty mixed drink. These all have a lot less sugar than the super sweet shit mentioned above, so generally you'll have less of a chance getting sick drinking these... and you don't have to drink as many.

I'm not a fan of flavored vodkas and rums... they're good but you have to drink more to get fucked up (lower alcohol content), and since they're flavored it limits you more as far as what you can mix with. They may be fine for you if you are a new drinker with low tolerance though.

Oh yeah, you mentioned slushies... if you're out and about go to a place that serves frozen drinks... here in florida there are a bars that specialize in that (Fat Tuesday's, Wet Willies, Chillers, etc.) These drinks are definitely big on high alcohol content without tasting the alcohol. "Call a Cab" and "190 octane" usually have the most ridiculous amounts of alcohol, but you won't know it till it's too late! I believe they use 190 proof Everclear or Golden Grain grain alcohol in these and most of the drinks at these fine establishments. Maybe there is a frozen drink place near you.

The Wife swears by Bailies topped up with ice cubes and milk.

Mojitos, Long Island Ice Tea.

Those 2 drinks are "girly"', yet very effective. And allows you to keep some manliness. I had some GREAT sangrias through out the years. Most had a lot of other booze in it though.

Chick I was out with last week kept ordering Diet Coke and cherry-flavored vodka. That was pretty tasty.

But, seriously, Carpet, XX chromosomes or not, man up and order yourself a Maker's Mark on the rocks. Nectar of the Gods, my friend. And, by Gods, I mean me.

It is too early in the morning for this thread.

Something like this, though Mattioli and I part ways on our whiskey of choice (Jameson, you fool!).

Rum and coke was my training wheels, then whiskey sours. I don't drink very often, but, when I do, it's hard cider, beer-snob beer, and whiskey, sometimes straight, sometimes mixed with ginger beer. Because, as has been said, nothing will make you hate everything and everyone more than drinking a bunch of sugar with your alcohol. Dear God.

The Irish car bomb is another great and culturally-insensitive beverage that I wanted to order in England but couldn't for obvious reasons. You take eight ounces of Guinness in a cup (preferably a red solo cup) and then drop in a full shot glass of Bailey's. This is kind of a next-level mixed drink because its drinkability is time-contigent: not only does this taste really good, it tastes better the faster you drink it (it curdles within seconds), thus encouraging you to drink more faster. It also prevents hangovers to the extent that it makes a lot of people vomit shortly after drinking it.
Really a full shot of Bailey's? Car bombs need to have 50/50 mix of Bailey's and Jameson.

As for things that don't taste like booze...I got nothing.

A woman after my own heart. Yes, when budget or circumstance won't permit any of the fancier stuff it's always Jameson time. I love that thing so much. I wish I could drink it instead of water and not die.

Fun fact - The Gaelic word for whiskey (ouisce) literally means water. Sounds like an invitation to try to me, man.

Know what's also excellent? Shot of Irish whiskey in strong black tea. And, hey! That's a morning beverage! If you'll excuse me...
Oddly enough, I never tried any Irish whiskey. I own and love the Scots whiskys, but I really should try the Jameson.

Hey, now. I'm not adverse to Jamesons. It's simply that the (non-existent) southern gentleman in me demands that I drink bourbon.

And strong tea and whiskey sounds oddly heavenly.

Also pour a shot of brandy in a cup. Fill up with strong and aromatic tea. We have a black mountain tea in Greece that's great for that. Add a teaspoon of honey, stir and enjoy. Not only does it taste and smell great, a couple of those instantly cures the flu.
I think the Italian version of this (at least, in the Mattioli household) is coffee with a healthy dose of Sambuca.

Yeah, I can't imagine drinking Maker's over Jameson. Though I've recently been introduced to Basil Hayden and man does that go down smooth.

I'm not particularly in love with bourbon. I tend to think of it as something to mix with coke or ginger ale. If I want to enjoy a scotch, I'll have it over ice.
If I hear of anyone of you diluting your scotch with fucking coke, I will track you down and bludgeon you while pouring the cheapest bottle of Dewars I can find in your mouth and all over you. Don't.

If you want a decent whiskey that won't break the bank but tastes good, I prefer: Jameson, Chivas Regal, Maker's Mark, Knob Creek, etc.

When the wallet's looking good, I like to move up the scotch chain.

I'd recommend White Russians as well, but you can't drink too many of them, thus negating the "get really fucked up" qualifier.

That's what I though before I tasted BH. Seriously, its amazing. And yeah, I drink Jameson neat, bourbon and scotch over ice.

I like whiskey as much as the next Kennedy, but I do wonder how people can come into a thread asking for drinks that don't taste like booze recommending anything on the rocks. How is that helpful?

I'm pretty sure it's because I told Carpet to nut up and drink bourbon.

And, Div, yeah, Basil Haydens is good stuff. Side note: there's a bar in DC called Bourbon. It's just like heaven.
I'm usually a Jameson guy but on the recommendation of the guy in the liquor store one day I tried Jim Beam's Rye and have come to like it a lot. It's the cheapest whiskey I've found that doesn't taste like colored vodka.
Plus, any fucked-upness on Carpet's behalf has probably already occurred. It's natural for this thread to become a little more free form now.

Don't wanna taste the alcohol? Use grape soda. Totally kills the taste.

I used to mix Vodka and grape soda in case I was ever stopped by cops while driving.

Yeah, two of my favorite bars in NYC are Whiskey Town and its sister bar Whiskey Tavern.

glass of ice
dash of dry vermouth
fill almost to top with Kettle One vodka
olive juice to taste
couple olives
stir

enjoy

My wife likes this concoction I came up with:

vanilla bean ice cream with 1/2 oz of Baileys, 1/2 oz of Kahlua, and 1 oz of vodka (usually plain but vanilla is nice). Blend that shit and you have an awesome milkshake now and a party later.

I serve it in a martini glass with a line of dark chocolate inside.

Thanks, Steve. I thought I'd have correct that misconception. He also mentions that it should be consumed out of a red Solo cup when it's a drink built for a pint glass.

As far as girlie drinks, snakebites aren't too painful.

Personally, I'm still in the "beer" phase of my alcoholic's training course. I haven't even gotten to the hard stuff. And yeah, since I'm going to have to buy this shit, you can bet I'm not going to buy the top shelf stuff just yet. But I know you guys like to talk shop, and I don't wish to get in the way.

When it comes to something I'm going to mix (usually vodka), I don't really care about buying top shelf stuff. Kettle One is about as sophisticated as I go if I'm buying the bottle, and that's if I'm looking to treat myself. Otherwise I'm down in the middle with the stuff that's around $15... Svedka, Smirnoff, etc. Don't like to dip too far below that. I like to stick to vodka as it gives me the least amount of hangovers and I can actually keep track of how much I'm drinking. I've got friends who seem to drink Crown Royal and not much else, and they're always worse for wear the next day. Long Islands are good but they destroy me because I don't know when to stop. Shit's definitely not a "girlie drink". Fuck bars that try to make them out of that pre-mixed shit though!
Yeah, the good stuff is for drinking as straight up as possible. For mixing use the cheapest of the middle of the road stuff. Avoid the really cheap ones as cheap booze + mixing = exploding heads and stomachs the next morning.
A car bomb should really just have a splash of Bailey's. Float some on the shot.

And remember, always drink responsibly.

Ha! Had no idea Carpet was Patrick's girl, although reading this thread in hindsight it seems kinda obvious.

So, if its a decent bargain booze you're looking for, I tend to think vodka and rum are the most forgiving at lower price ranges. I'll take Skyy or Stoli over Sveda or Absolut. And Bacardi ain't too bad but if you can get your grubby mitts on a bottle of Myers, its better. In my experience, cheap tequila and whiskey (bourbon's a bit more forgiving than scotch) is usually a mistake.

Not everyone's good time, just the OPs. It struck me that if she tried one of everything listed in this thread, she would die. Pleasantly, to be sure, but still dead.

Kettle One is my favorite. Stoli is good too. I think shit like Belvedere and Grey Goose are overpriced shit, that is only popular do to mainstream rap videos.

I've wanted to try Alton Brown and Mythbusters technique of triple filtering shitty vodka through a brita. They said it takes smirnoff to grey goose.

99% of the time, if it's not made in a blender, I can't fuck with it.

However, I had a grape kool-aid martini at Ketchup in Los Angeles, and that shit was a religious experience.

i don't know how much filtered vodka you can get from 1 Britta filter, but its not as if Grey Goose is that much more than Smirnoff. I mean, the price difference might not add up to much if you factor in the cost of the charcoal filter.
^you hit it on the head. You can do maybe 2 to 3 bottles per pitcher filter. Still comes out to be cheaper. But do the whole bottle at once, not each glass.
Yeah, that's what I heard. A filter is basically 10 bucks. And honestly, you don't even need to start with smirnoff, you can get zebko vodak for all it matters. The bad taste and ill effects are in the impurities. So, according to the shows, run a whole bottle through the filter 3 times, and rail vodka now tastes like mid to top shelf. Figure a bottle of the cheap shit is about 8 bucks, and one ten dollar filter will do this to about 3 bottles (9 times through a filter, according the the shows), it's a pretty good deal. If this was 5 years ago and I still drank like it was my job, I'd definitely do this.

Yeah, Kettle One and Stoli are two of my favorites as well, agree with all of the above. Sure, I'll drink Goose and Belve on someone else's dime though! Not a huge fan of Absolut either... I really do prefer Stoli to that.

As for the filtering of super cheap vodka to make it smoother... yeah, some friends and I tried that a few years ago. Used some THE bottom of the barrel vodka called SKOL. Cheapest stuff they sold at the liquor store. It made it a lot smoother, but it still didn't seem very good. I might try it again someday with a mid-tier vodka and see how it goes though.

My rum of choice back in college when I first started trying to drink on the cheap was some stuff called Heaven Hills. Used to buy it at Green's liquor store on Ponce de Leon near downtown in Atlanta. The description on the back of the bottle is the best part... they make that shit sound so exquisite, but it's an $8 bottle of light rum. It was decent though, I've had much worse (castillo, blech).

That course will serve you well an entire lifetime. Especially in this day and age when your average American can get quality beer at the local grocery/liquor store. Don't get me wrong, I've always got a bottle of the Macallan on hand (just picked up the 18 year), but beer makes up the vast quantity of my drinking. The Bavarians wouldn't lie to you.

And I would happily drink Ketel One over the Goose.
if your looking for a good, mid grade budget Vodka.

Tito's Handmade Vodka is actually pretty good. 17.99 for a liter bottle, and it's pretty smooth. Still perfer Kettle One and Stoli, but for a cheaper option, you could do alot worse.

The best thing I ever discovered at the liquor store, was Vermouth soaked olives. Perfect for a dirty vodka martini.
