Most Artistic cities in North America...shut up New Orleans

This article measures the most "bohemian cities" by measuring the number of working artists (painters, writers, etc).

The high placement of Toronto and Vancouver makes sense to me. Fantastic places to visit and live in if you're interested in the arts. And I've heard great things about Montreal and Minneapolis. On the other hand, Washington D.C.? Really?

It says Portland JUST missed the list. I'm going to go outside right now and start street performing!

I think it's funny that Hartford is number two on the bottom list and yet has one of the best music schools in the country.

I'm pretty surprised that Green Bay shows up in the list of smaller places above the norm. Not necessarily anything against the place - it's just that I hear about artists and musicians coming out of even smaller towns in Wisconsin more often than I do about artists and musicians coming out of Green Bay.

The explanation for DC has a couple of reasons, I think. One is that it's the only really well off city in the area, so suburban (and the suburbs are massive) bohemians hankering for city life probably wind up there because they can feel like their living the life and feel reasonably safe (whether they really are or not is a different matter). The local music scene here has been going pretty strong since the punk explosion of the 70s/80s, even though it rarely yields great fruit. And that's just an example, but the city seems like a magnet for creative/bohemian types from the region.

The city is also a magnet for those who are academically inclined anyway, what with all the policy jobs and journalists about. The young ones may quit that life after a period of disillusionment and decide to become writers, and lo, there's a community for that here.

Toronto more "bohemian" than Montreal? Are you kidding me?

There's a HUGE economic factor in there. And since it's the case, it makes sense. But Toronto is still, unlike Vancouver, a very boring city.

Minneapolis is at the right place on this list.

Woohoo Tucson. Boo on Louisville tho.

Boo on no Asheville, NC. For its size it should definitely be on that list.

Nashville makes sense. I think 90 percent of the people I've met here at least play the guitar, and most have 4-song demos.

LA #!

Riverside #1

I think that says it all

I would have though That VICTORIA would be higher then Vancouver.

Why boo? It's a realistic ranking.

I think your explanation for DC makes sense, D.S. I actually worked there for six months and I guess working with all those suits can make you a tad myopic. And I have to disagree about Toronto. I've found the place to be pretty vibrant, at least for music and movies. And Nashville's another place I've lived in for a few years. Great music scene, even if you don't like country.

Oh, I know. I grew up there. Every bit of my family still lives there, to include cousins and all their kids, etc. I do have one sister that lives about 35 mins away in southern Indiana. Why Boo? I dunno really. Just something to say I guess.

Big part of my heart still resides in Louavul.

I will say this for the city. It has a place for its artistic types and it has carved out a chunk of the city to house them in. Everyone else just goes about their lives.
