Channel surfing and you

Time Warner Cable changed all my channels today. They have regrouped all their channels into categories to be easier to use.

Unfortunately, they have moved ALL their HD channels to 4 digit channels. Those are the only channels I watch.

So instead of the somewhat horrible 3 digit stations, I now must type in 4-digits in a limited amount of time to change the channel. I also need to relearn where my favorite stations are.

Of course the other option is just to use the scrolling menu. But actually knowing the channel I want to watch is usually quicker.

so I'm curious... how do you channel surf?

Up and down channels?
Do you navigate the numerical buttons knowing your favorite station?
or do you change channels in the menu screen?

Neaux, I prefer the...Up/Down, approach when...Surfing a dangerous, Channel!

eh, with digital i tend to just check the menu selections. its easier to go through 5 channels page by page rather then one at a time

I just hit the guide and scroll through. Then hit Enter on the show that looks interesting and get taken right to it.

I have satellite (DirectTV) and this is exactly what I do as well. Another advantage of using the guide: you get to see what's coming up on the channels within the next couple of hours and plan ahead.

I scroll through the guide, but Time-Warner has the worst fucking interface for this. We just switched to AT&T Uverse, so that should be interesting.

I just scroll through the guide on my Tivo. Which is so much better than the regular Comcast Digital/HD guide because I only see the channels I get. Not every channel teasing me with stuff I can't watch.

I use the page scroll a lot, but yeah... 4 digit channels suck. All the HD cable stations through Florida's Brighthouse cable service are 4 digit. 1365, etc.

The guide. Always the guide.

I have major hatred issues with Time Warner (explain to me why don't we get Comedy Central in HD again, you fucks?), and their interface (which somehow got an update that works WORSE than before), but the HD channels starting at 1000, premium HD channels starting at 1100, has been pretty simple to get used to for me.

Which wouldn't be so bad if the HD channels simply added a two-digit number to the front of the standard def channel so the HD channel number could be intuitively deduced. Some do -- ESPN is 29, ESPN HD is 1329, makes perfect sense. But TCM is 46 while TCM HD is 1314. And we have some standard def channels that are three-digit numbers, so their HD channel bears no resemblance whatsoever.

get a programmable universal remote. They're not too expensive nowadays and you can assign channels to buttons for quick switchin. I use an old sony commander that does anything and everything.
