NHL Off Season 2010

So, as it seems we have a fair amount of hockey fans we might as well talk off season.

The draft is on June 25th and it's open season on free agents.

Nabokov, Leighton, Theodore, Raycroft and Turco are all out there as UFAs. One of them has to go somewhere new. I'm guessing Nabokov ends up being the one moving. I suspect Leighton is going the way of other flash in the pan goalies, an asterisk on the Flyers' history page.

Hall's going first, clearly but I wouldn't be surprised to see Fowler or Gudbranson leap over Seguin. Pickard's going late first round/early second for goalies with Campbell shortly behind.
Also Manny Legace is testing the market too as the Hurricanes have announced Justin Peters to be this year's back up goalie.

Legace is a pretty good goalie and helped the Canes after a horrible 1st half of the season last year.

Beware Tampa Bay for next season. They signed Guy Boucher as coach. Hence, they'll make playoffs. And maybe more.

I admittedly haven't been keeping up too much with the prospect pool this year (why bother, I'm a leaf fan), but I thought/think Seguin is a lock for #2. I actually sort of suspect that Edmonton will move down a pick to add some depth at center ice since they're packed to the gills with wingers.

Tampa is looking pretty good this year. Think they'll move Lecavalier/St. Louis and fill some holes in the lineup? I think they'd be crazy to trade St. Louis, he just makes everyone better.

Where do you guys think Kovalchuk will land? Sounds like he's looking for Crosby/Ovechkin/Holyshitdoyoureallythinksomeonewillpayyou10,000,00 0 kind of money. But then again, it's not often you get a chance to add a guaranteed 40 goal guy for nothing.
The guy ain't a team player. If he chooses the NHL, and he's be dumb to go to the inferior KHL, the loser league, I'm betting he'll end up in LA. Imagine him finishing Kopitar's work....

First, I'm sorry you're a Leafs fan. My father is as well and it's hard to watch him every play off season. I am sympathetic to your cause. Burke ain't gonna help, either.

I think it's most likely he'll go in the two spot but if Boston keeps that pick they need a defenseman more than a centre so that might bump Fowler up. OTOH, if Edmonton trades (and it looks like they're going to) Seguin could go in the one spot and Hall drop below Gudbranson (Panthers need D as well)

I think they'll move Lecavalier. They need a number one goalie and the only way they can get that is by trading a really good player.

I think he's done. He's likely heading back home. Though I wouldn't mind seeing him Ottawa.

Halak just got traded to the St-Louis Blues for Lars Eller and Ian Schultz.

I know Eller is a good prospect, but still, WHAT THE FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK?

I suspect this will bite Montreal in the ass pretty hard.

Yeah I just read this. Seriously what the fuck right there. They traded away the reason they got so far in the playoffs...for a prospect? What a fucking shitty shitty shitty shitty trade. And its going to bite them in the ass big time. So much for a Habs return to the Habs of the past.
I dont' mind trading Halak, but they could have gotten David Perron or TJ Oshie. Fuck that.
Any word on when the Bruins' heart transplant is scheduled?

There isn't one? Shit.
you fuckers will get Seguin or Hall. Stop complaining.

As for Halak, I'm guessing it's also about money, but still....

Halak's gonna go from 800 Gs to around 3.5/4 million. Pretty sure it was about the money. But they should've got someone for now with their huge young bruisers.

I'm with Martin, Chavez. Seguin's gonna look good in the B. Though Gudbranson would be nice for you guys as well. They should also should go after Nabokov and try to get some revenge for that Thornton trade.

Whatever. A prospect is a prospect, no matter how good people think he'll end up - "a bird in the hand" and all that.

But I DO agree Boston should take vengeance on the Sharks' for the Bruins' idiotic decision to trade Thornton for spare parts.
well the schedule for 2010-2011 has been announced.

The Hurricanes have a wild schedule with 2 games in Finland. Their first home game is not until Oct 27th (the last starting home game of all the teams against the CAPS). Sheesh. I cant wait to find out what 12 games I'll be going to...

Thing is certain prospects are already Grade A players. Guys like Crosby, Getzlaf and so on. Hall and Seguin are some of them.
And Boston just got Nathan Horton for Dennis Wideman. Great trade by the Bruins.

Montreal re-signed Plekanec 30 mil for 6 years. A bit long, but he's really good both sides of the ice.

And Nabokov has been told that he'll be leaving the San Jose franchise.

Annnnnnnnd...Niedermeyer retires!

I just found this thread!

Fuck David Perron! He's an asshole in the Mike Ribeiro mold. I read an article last year that was about his teamates (new and old) who all hate him. Even his coach said he didn't like him.

No way would the Blues have offered Oshie for a goalie. That's just not the market value of goalers for the last few years.

Concerning Nathan Horton, good move by the Bruins and terrible move by the Panthers. Florida didn't get much in return for a guy who's only 25, has been fairly consistent and who has a good chance of exploding if he plays with a playmaker of Savard's caliber.

I can't believe Plekanec got six years. At 5 millions per, I though it would be four-five years max and he'd get 4 millions per for six-seven years. It also means Eller will play on the third line for at least the next four years. Weird planification from Gauthier.
You sweeten the deal, Alexor. You put Halak with a draft selection and you get bigger things than Eller and Bum #66.

EDIT: As for Perron or Ribeiro, all you need is proper guidance from veterans and the directions. It's clear there wasn't in the Habs back then, with the Price situation and Ribeiro, but still, talent is talent.
And now is the time to trade Markov. Sell high. I wouldn't sign him; he's gonna ask 6-7 millions at least, is always injured and is getting older. Trade him, go get a complement to your offensive for the 2 first line and a promising d-men.
I have zero hopes for my Stars as long as Hicks is in the picture. There is a glimmer of hope in the horizon. Maybe, just maybe, a purchase will be done this year.

I disagree. You can teach a player how to backcheck but you can't teach him how to be a decent person. Look at Ribeiro, how they were saying he'd changed since the trade. He got suspended for behavior problems and the Stars are looking to trade him. Same douchebag, different town.

I'd trade him only if we got a super-prospect or a young superstar like Malkin. Markov's been badly injured the last two seasons but before that he'd only miss a few games. His age doesn't scare me. His game isn't based on speed and great defensemen can play forever. So I'd sign him until he's 38 with a cap friendly hit à la Marc Savard.

Blackhawks trade Big Buff, Eager, Sopel
Quote:
The Chicago Blackhawks made a blockbuster trade with the Thrashers on Wednesday, the Stanley Cup champions moving Dustin Byfuglien, Ben Eager, Brent Sopel and a prospect to Atlanta for a first-round pick, a second-round pick, prospect Jeremy Morin and veteran forward Marty Reasoner, a source told ESPN.com.
Atleast they went to a non contender. Salary dump. Buff is good and his trade value is high. Sad to see Buff go.

Also sounds like the Hawks get Joey Crabb as part of the deal. Clearly a salary cap move, as we knew the Hawks needed to do. Byfuglien wasn't consistent through the regular season, but really peaked in the playoffs. I know people say it's the right time to move Buff because his trade value is high, and getting a good prospect and first rounder as part of the deal is pretty good I guess.

Probably still some more moves for the Hawks to make. I'm sure Madden doesn't come back, he was expected to be a one and done. Ladd could be gone too. I'd think they see the most value in Versteeg and Sharp, can they do enough to keep them both?

As a fan, of course you wish the team could stay together. You get a sentimental attachment to the players. But no chance of that with the Hawks. I'm sad to see Buff go. Sopel too, he really gave it his all in the playoffs, stepped up his play.

Hearing reports of a separate deal, Hawks get a 6th round draft pick from Edmonton, for center Colin Fraser.
Dale Tallon really deserved to be sacked for putting the Hawks in that situation. Without his stupid contracts they could've kept the core of the time for a while.
Fowler, falling like a rock.
How do they have that many people at the NHL draft? And in LA no less. Who the hell are these guys and how do people know about them? Atleast you get to see NBA/NFL players all the time.
well I think Carolina picked an excellent player SKINNER that might have the stuff to actually play in the NHL level right out of the gate. The draft compared him to Parise.
Skinner's good. Too bad he's stuck in a bland team, Staal excepted.
Rod BrindAMour just retired.. Press conference right now.

He will help coach the Canes and stay in Raleigh.
Modano too. Today is a sad day.
Fuck Brind'amour. Piece of shit cheater. Sad for Modano though. By the way Neaux, I hope you guys get a good and fun team eventually. But it's not gonna happen soon. Even with Staal, Skinner and that Sutter dude.

so, The Leafs got slightly better with Versteeg (better than awfully shittastic), Vancouver way more with Hamuis, and Pittsburgh a whole lot more with Michalek. And Martin, though, like Volchenkov, he got overpaid.

Montreal got a backup goalie. And some dude, for trading the younger more retarded K brother. Not too bad.
Pittsburgh got better but did indeed overpay Martin. But I won't complain because I believe defense is the most important part of a hockey team. The problem is Crosby and Malkin still don't have any real wingers.

I knew Montréal would'nt be active today because they don't have the cap space so I don't really care about what happenned. Altough I'd like it if they signed Evgeny Artyukhin.

Finally, fuck the Canes.
Artyukhin ain't a bad idea. But the Ruskies have a poor rep right now...

Kovalchuk is likely staying in NJ with my Devils. Now they need to get a good goaltending prospect.

Shame about Probert but it's really not much of a shock. Dude lived the life of a professional wrestler.

Really wish the Ducks would go ahead and start selling tickets so I could get down there for the Pens game.

This contract makes a mockery of the salary cap. The league would be very dumb to approve it.

They didn't approve it.

God, fuck you Bettman for not closing it earlier.

Of course, the Devils and the NHLPA will have a field-day in getting the NHL decision overturned and as long as Kovalchuk stays, I'm happy.

Fuck Kovalchuk.

Because he's not worth more than Ovechkin or Crosby. Not even close. Because he's the penultimate go-for-money player, even more so than Hossa. He's stupid enough to go play with a declining team. Once Brodeur is out, the Devils will become a secondary team. And it's the last team I'd expect an exciting player like him to go to. Money is everything.

If he had a brain, he would have gone to LA and rule for years with Kopitar, Doughty and Johnson.
