I've been through legal proceedings before (I was caught with pot a number of years ago), and my question was to Devin. There are preliminary hearings where you can motion to get something dismissed. If this is as cut and dry as I understand it to be (photos taken in public are the property of the person who takes them), then it doesn't seem like it would eat up much time to go before a judge, explain that, and get it thrown out. To me, it didn't even seem like you'd need a lawyer.

But, I don't run a film website and I don't deal with this kind of stuff in my life, and I was just hoping for some more insight into the thinking that says it's better not to fight these things until it's the right fight. Sorry if that was somehow in the wrong.

None taken, and it's your house, in the end I respect that. It's just that you set up this thread for people to put their thoughts about the rules, so I'm free to vent here. Wasn't meant to make you change your mind, God knows I wouldn't try that.

Kate, the studio undoubtedly has better lawyers than Nick/Deven et al could hope to afford. They'd find a way to make this go to trial.

And even with your scenario, that's still a day lost. Which means a movie or two not screened for a review. Which means a panel or junket missed. Which means however many stories not posted because someone's down at the courthouse pleading their case, with guarantee that would be the end of it. It's not worth the hassle.

Besides, if I recall, CHUD's relationship with Fox isn't all that good. No need to make it worse.

Fair enough, thanks for the perspective, Dickson. Maybe the only way to tackle something like this would be to get all the sites to pledge to put their foot down and pick a day to stop submitting to the bullies at the same time.(such as people have suggested for everyone refusing to pay health care premiums on the same day, so no one could face being cut off in the event of illness for being one of only a few people involved in a boycott).

Online Journalism often faces criticism that it's not "real" journalism from the stuck up print journalism types (who frequently rip off websites without properly crediting the reporting they did on the story at hand). In that spirit, I think that some confederacy of online journalists should be formed (not just in film reporting, but for politics ETC too) where dues could be paid towards a legal fund for helping members fight off spurious charges incurred through honest reporting

Anyway, that's my idea

One would think that Fox would like the free publicity. You know, to get us excitied for an up coming film of theirs... To threaten a movie website is kind of backwards. But that's my opinion.

Especially when Devin/CHUD is the guy/website you'd most want as your point man for getting people excited for a new POTA movie given his passion for the series.

I was just wondering what your stance is on the modding community? Can I post stuff about running Mac OS X on a Dell in the Tech forum? I'm not talking about pirating, I'm talking about buying the OS and installing it on a non mac system.

They're pretty much concerned with movie piracy.

So CHUD Main Site Feed doesn't create the MCP article threads in the video games section. Is there a way to change that? That's usually where most people would go to talk about the video game articles I would imagine.

I much prefer all main page articles in the Main Page board. I figure that videogames get their own threads the way movies do, with the videogame threads going in the VIDEOGAME section. You don't post movie news in "featured films" and you shouldn't post videogame news in "VIDEO GAMES"

That's just MHO

Where'd the rules go?
CHAOS REIGNS!
There should be two rules, rules that have served another forum I am on very well for many, many years.

Rule #1- Have a thick fucking skin.

Rule #2- No child porn.

Really? He's away like a day and all the rules get thrown out of the window?
I normally don't get involved in how this site is run, but I'm not too thrilled about this, I liked a lot of the rules.

It seems folks are starting to forget this one.

I'd have to agree. I'm all for fun now that Devin is gone, but there are several people who have returned to posting off topic attacks that consist of nothing more than "OMG You're an idiot!" ETC. I want to know: do the NEW RULES stand or not? Do the NEW MODS care about enforcing them?
You've been off the leash since Devin left, Kate. You have no room to talk.

It struck me as far too restrictive in the first place. Admittedly an image can be overused or just plain stupid but there are times when a judiciously used pic speaks volumes. And these boards seem to be populated by folks who, for the most part, use them wisely.

Rath,

If I've been breaking the rules in some way, please point it out in this thread (or PM me), and I will swiftly amend my behavior. However, there have been several flagrant NEW RULE violations (such as image memes or thread derails by way of off topic insults) that have garnered zero attention. I am actually fond of rules and structure, I've come to learn. Otherwise I don't know where to draw the line, often times

I'd appreciate some clarification about the NEW RULES: Do they still stand? More importantly, will they anyone bother to enforce them now that he's gone?

EDIT: With that said, I never agreed with the FACE PALM ban in the first place, because IMHO it's not a meme, it's using an image as short hand for an emotion. I don't see how you can have smilies() but not face palms. They are essentially the same thing

If someone breaks a rule and it bothers you, PM a mod or Eileen.

No one rule breaking post bothers me enough to bother you guys about it, I just find that alot of threads I participate in suddenly are becoming about me as a person and not my ideas, which is what happened before the NEW RULES were implemented. It's frustrating

Oh well, I do appreciate the suggestion Patrick, and I'll be doing my best to stick to the spirit of the NEW RULES

Sure some folks have posted images, but the place has hardly turned into Thunderdome since Devin left.

Agreed. All the mods (new and old) are doing a great job. A picture for a response here and there is fine.

disregard.
