Top Chef - Washington D.C. - Page 2

Thinking about this more while at lunch I realized that the reason I so quickly assumed that Alex's pilfering of Ed's puree was intentional and malicious is that at this point, that's the kind of shit that I expect from this cast. Season 7's chefs have been more cutthroat and strategic (and unprofessional) than any previous cast (though I suppose that that's up for debate-- there have been some fairly devious chefs on the show before). Which makes it easy to believe that one would so blatantly steal from another.
I don't think this cast is any more or less devious or conniving, but they sure are an unlikable bunch.
I guess I just can't think of the last time that there was gamesmanship of the variety Angelo brings to the table on Top Chef. I mean, I can only think of that little motherfucker with the bad Wolverine haircut. What's his name. Marcel. That guy. But no one else.

Easy joke, but I laughed anyways.
I totally think Alex swiped the pea puree, but Ed should have spoke the fuck up. It's his fault for not calling attention to it.

I know why he didn't, because it's the classy thing to let the loser have his win. I think Tommy C put it best. Ultimately, it doesn't really matter, even if it was shitty.
It didn't matter for the big win, but the winner of the challenge got $20,000. That's not chump change.
Well, that was an interesting Restaurant Wars. Alex proves once again that he is one of the wierdest freaks on the planet. And he's a dick. That wait staff should have punched him in the mouth. There's a big difference between being strong and direct and being an asshole. Ed and Kevin continue to come on strong. As for Kenny...he deserved to go. While Alex of course was the worst person/chef/host of the night the judges were right. His team won, he earns the right to stay. Kenny's team lost and being the leader coupled with two middling dishes earns you a ticket to Loserville. The Beast has been defeated.

I loved watched Angelo get unglued. If he wasn't a chef he'd be a serial killer in the Ted Bundy mold.
I've grown to dislike Kenny over the course of the competition, and seeing him go home was pretty satisfying. In every competition there are two super egos, one that's a force for good and one that's pure evil; this season we had two super egos and they both were jerks. Now that Kenny isn't around Angelo could end up dominating the whole thing, but I think Ed, Tiffany, and Kevin have a lot to show us all yet. That's my hope for top three.

I am not at all surprised to see Blue go down. They cared way more about the drama in Red's kitchen and the unraveling of Angelo than their own dishes, and like Gail said diners don't give a fuck what goes on behind the scenes so long as the food and the service are good. Seems like it's a mistake that gets made every season in some capacity or another and you'd think that people would have learned by now.

Good for Ed. He deserves a win for making food and being a likable personality.
Kenny just needed to tone his dishes down and he would have been ok. The judges told him that I few times if I recall correctly. Amanda really shouldn't be there. I was pulling for her because she's the underdog and she's cute but it's time for her to go.
Amanda needs to go, but I understand why Kenny took the hit. He is way overconfident about his food and consistently tries to do too much. Every quickfire he makes a "duo" or "medley" of whatever the ingredient is. If there's one thing I learned from watching so many seasons is that it doesn't matter if the dish is simple; it just has to taste good.

Ed, Tiffany, and Kevin are my faves, in that order. It was kind of ridiculous how during the challenge they showed the judges tearing apart Tiffany's dish and then during panel they praised it. The editing is pretty awful this year.

The Beast speaks

A few choice quotes:

Quote:
At the end of last night's episode you said "it's anybody's game now." Can you explain what you meant and tell us who you think deserves to win?

I felt that at this point that it is truly anyone's game. In my mind it was going to come down to Angelo, Me, Kevin and Kelly with Ed and Tiff bringing in the rear. With me out of the equation it truly was anyone's game. I was the most diverse chef there. Being able to cook my food for 4 courses would have sealed the deal, because I am just as solid in savory as I am in sweet.

who was your favorite and least favorite guest judge and why?

Least favorite judge was a tie between Michelle Bernstein and Frank Bruni purely because of their Simon Cowell-esque way of criticizing the chefs in a hurtful way versus stating the facts of what they didn't like. Favorites were a three-way tie between Padma, Gail and Eric. They always gave solid, accurate feedback in a graceful and respectful manner. True professionals!
I agree, the editing has been for shit this season.

The "anybody's game" quote is exactly what's turned me off of Kenny. Dude, if you've been paying attention, it's been anybody's game the entire fucking season. If Kenny had been on top constantly and won more than like, two challenges, then I'd understand the comment, but Kenny hasn't been dominating the game or anything. He came out and established his presence at the top then slipped on a fucking banana peel and toppled over in a comical fashion. That's it.

I just dont think Kenny is that good of a chef. I mentioned to my wife two weeks ago, that when you think about it he's only won what...1 quickfire? The guy is all talk.

Was scared for Angelo for a minute there.

Yep, you and I have the same vision for top three. Let's hope it goes that way.

Glad to see Alex go home; glad to see Tiffany earn another win. I'd be thrilled if she won the whole thing.
Been watching a marathon of TC today and Alex actually was pretty strong in the beginning. He was in the top in the first challenge and tended to do well when he stuck to dishes he knows. In the last ep when he said that he wanted to try different techniques on the show, it made sense that he started to slip towards the bottom. I understand wanting to challenge yourself, but it makes no sense to continually make dishes you've never made before on a competition show.

Also, Kenny won the farm challenge with his eggplant curry. So he has two wins. But his ego is way out of check.
Yeah. He had two wins, and he was clearly talented, but the "it's anyone's game now!" comment is totally unearned. He didn't dominate the season; the winners have been so varied that it's always been "anyone's game".
Good to see Amanda go. Great to see Ed win.

With Ed, Kelly, Tiffany, Angelo, and Kevin left, we're coming down to the wire. I think we're going to see Angelo, Ed, and Tiffany make it to the final four; it's going to come down to whether Kelly or Kevin screws the pooch in the last challenge. Though Angelo has been so off his game lately that I could easily see an Ed/Kevin/Tiffany/Kelly top four too. What's undeniable is that Ed and Tiffany are the two most consistent and talented chefs here, so if they don't end up making it to the finale I'll be shocked.
Good riddance boozy!
Oxidized tartar is one of the most repulsive looking foods ever. It may still be edible and safe but I'd be damned if I would eat it. She's an idiot. Adios to the perennial herpe lip.

Ed and Tiffany are on fire. I'd like to see the two of them and Angelo in the finale. Angelo because even when he's off he makes a damn interesting dish and he's got great cooking smarts. He's also a wackadoo so he makes for good TV.
I would have posted in here more, but it took me this long to catch up with this terrible season. And yet, here I am.

In the last couple weeks, I've actually started to like Angelo. If it wasn't for Tiffany, I think I'd be rooting for him. But I like Ed and Kevin too. Strange, that despite this super annoying cast, I kind of like everyone left.

Except Kelly. I would like her, but her restaurant is named Kelly Liken, which is her name. So fuck that.
I'm not a fan of Kelly either.

Once Angelo's initial head of steam died down he became a lot more tolerable and Kenny became sort of the huge douchebag. I don't mind Angelo as much anymore, but I'd much rather see him out of the top three. Kevin, Ed, and Tiffany are a lot more interesting. That said Angelo probably makes for better TV so expect to see him there.
I still hate Angelo. I'm rooting for Tiffany and Ed.
Angelo was super arrogant in the beginning. Now that he's more humble, he's more likeable. Though that one montage of everyone talking about how weird he is with, juxtaposed with him chanting self-affirmations to himself was kind of off putting. And in one of the eps he mentioned that he has a fiance in Russia and that he would use the prize money if he won to bring her to the states. Does he have a mail order bride? Angelo is definitely a little strange.

My girlfriend and I make that same joke every time that shit comes up. What the hell is the deal with her? lol. A part of me hopes that he'll win just so she'll be at the finale, maybe wearing a wedding dress holding a bottle of vodka.
Damn those frozen mussels!
Yep, there goes my favorite. God damn it. She was definitely the most likable chef, too.

I like that the chefs seemingly liked all of their dishes. Like them or not, when these chefs are on, they are ON.
Such a bummer. I was starting to think it was coming down to her and Ed.

I really wish that crazy go psycho Angelo was leaving. He is seemingly an amazing chef, but his interviews make me very uncomfortable and give the impression that Alex made off with his lithium some time back. If I was NASA I wouldn't let him anywhere near that shuttle launch...
Tiffany? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Well, I did not see that coming. No sir.

Kevin or Ed must win. Must. I agree that while I don't outright hate Angelo anymore, he's really off his fucking rocker and I'd rather not see someone so...well, so seemingly unhinged win the competition.

This sucks. Tiffany became my favorite chef of the season in just a few episodes after we started to get to see more of her personality as the number of contestants dwindled. Seeing her get taken out just at the cut-off stings pretty badly, especially since I only care for two out of the four remaining chefs. I think it really comes down to Ed, since Kevin-- much as I like him and think he's talented-- doesn't, to me, read as having the stamina to go all the way in the final challenge.
Kelly's a dark horse, but I can't stand her personality. Kevin is the least experienced of the remaining contestant's so he seems like he might falter when the pressure gets put on. So yeah, it comes down to Angelo and Ed. I foresee a repeat of their rivalry, with Ed banging Angelo's girlfriend again, er, winning the competition.

And then banging Angelo's mail order Russian bride after winning the competition.
I was pulling for Tiffany. Sucks to see her go. She's a lock for fan favorite though. Now I'm pulling for Ed.

The top 2 seem to be Ed and Angelo. They've been consistently creative in addition to having great technique. Kelly and Kevin each having an outside chance, but seem to lack the creativity of the other two. Ed has really come on strong over the last half of the season. And other than Angelo's stumbles over the last few weeks, he has been pretty rock solid. I'm still not sure those stumbles weren't calculated. They were bad enough to get some sympathy and set up his "comeback" narrative. But the stumbles were not so bad that the judges would send him home when two clear weak links like Amanda and Alex were still in it. Angleo seems like a manipulative bastard, especially with his interaction with the other chefs who have taken his advice.
Ed, Angelo, Kevin. Place your bets.

My brain is saying Ed, but my heart wants Kevin to win.
Ed for the win!
They're overplaying the Angelo is sick shit in the ads and Ed has been on such a fire that I'm afraid he's going to pull a finale flop, but he seems the most confident, competent chef. And he also happens to be my favorite.

I'd be happy with Kevin too. Anyone but Angelo. Go ED!

Ed ftw.

Fucker looks and sounds exactly like my friend too...who happens to have been Michael Crichton's personal chef back in the day.
Kevin's reasons for wanting the win are just so earnest and so easy to get behind. And I kind of feel like going for the underdog here, since this really is about Ed vs. Angelo.
Gotta be Ed. I'm most interested in seeing how they interact with their Type A sous chefs.

I feel bad for whoever gets Mike V. That guy is a hell of a chef, but he ain't going to wanna play second fiddle to nobody.
Ha! As soon as I saw Mike V. come out, I was like who ever gets him wins. And of course as soon as Kevin said he was good friends with him, that solidified it. A good working relationship with someone who knows you, your cooking style, and has won the show? Unbeatable combo.

Angelo and Hung could have put up a better fight if Angelo hadn't been sick. But when I saw Ilan, who is a giant douchebag in real life, I felt bad for Ed. That said, Ed knows better than to hand over one quarter of his dishes to someone else completely as well as telling the judges he was trying to play it safe. He should have lied and went with Gayle's story about being true to his roots.

Congrats, Kevin! I couldn't be happier.

Also, I've eaten at Momofuko and their pork belly buns are fucking to die for.
Scoooooorebooooooooard

So happy to see the Kevin win this year. I don't think I've ever felt so strongly that a chef not only deserved to win but also needed to win, and seeing Kevin take the crown felt incredibly satisfying. Congratulations to him. I do agree that having Mike V. helped, but not in the sense that Mike V. is a beast and more in the sense that the two know each other, as Diva pointed out. It could have been any talented former contestant and Kevin could have won so long as he had a good working relationship with them.

Agreed, as well, on Ilan being a giant bastard. I cannot abide him as a Top Chef winner; he's a piece of shit. Poor Ed. But Kevin won so that's what matters.
Also, first person of color to win is a pretty cool honor. Still wish Tiffany would have made the finals.
From Tommy C's blog-- get ready to "whoa":

Quote:
Kevin’s food was the best we’ve had in any finale. It was exciting.
Whoa.
Wow. The first dish seemed pretty underwhelming, but yeah the judges seemed to really like Kevin's last three. And more importantly, he keep building momentum. Ed started strong, but the dessert definitely hurt as did his second dish in which he put everything under the sun on the plate. I was also bewildered why Angelo would put pork belly in a vegetarian dish. Clearly he wasn't working at his best.
Well, Ed put clam in the veg dish. Ed seemed like a real prick these last two weeks, which he didn't in DC, so I was just fine with the Kevin win.

But I still think the Volts and Beardman last year would've trumped them all easily.
I'm really glad Kevin won. He ended up being the most likable contestant (other than Tiffany) and his talent seemed to grow as the season progressed. That desert looked fucking amazing. It didn't surprise me when he had a relationship with Mike V. They're both very intense about cooking and like to take big risks. Luckily for both of them, it paid off.

But can you imagine Mike V and Angelo working together? That woulda been tough. I've gotta hand it to Angelo though, he handled losing with a lot of grade...more then I expected from him. Dude was seriously handicapped with being sick too, so good for him.

WTF @ Ed's dessert!?!?
Tiffany was the glue that held Ed together. Yes, he won the first 2 challenges, but he really showed through as a prick in the finales w/o her.
