Any opinions on this?

Like everyone else I saw the theatrical cut on the heels of the conventional costume epics Troy and Kingdom of Heaven and had a bad reaction to it. But whereas those movies have not become any more interesting with time, something has made me revisit Alexander. Maybe it's the subject. Or some different casting (Neeson and Gleeson are no where to be found) Or the little historical details. Or the total unshaven debauchery of the thing.

Anyway, I skipped the directors cut and went straight to this. How embarrassing for Stone that it should take him three attempts, but I think his "roadshow" cut is, this time, mostly a success.

The film is now structurally sound and I'm glad he didn't otherwise sanitize it for Ridley Scott fans. The most memorable departures of the film remain, from the elegant camera move from Gaugamela to the eagle and back again, to the distinctly Irish accents. The eerily beautiful opening titles and Hopkins scenes remain to give the story its mythic feel, and the rest is both visually stunning and at the same time, dirty and authentic.

... apart from a couple of wigs and accents.

Thoughts?
