Not Good
DOWNLOAD MP3 FILE

Drums - John
Keys, Vocals - Nick
Guitar - Micah
Bass, Backing Vocals - Steve

Bayside, we've arrived on time for lies
This is the build-up
where it all goes wrong

Forest Fires
Secret Handshakes
April Showers
Penis Envy
Bragadoccio
It's not good
Silver Lining
Fast Food Dining
Eyes for Diamonds
Feel Like Dying
We're All Sleepwalking
And It's Not Good

Opinion Dying
Ultimatums
Absent Drivers
Loaded Weapons
Unchecked Egos
And It's Not Good
Senses Heightened
Blinders Tightened
Underwriting
Feel Like Dying
We're all Sleepwalking
And It's Not Good

And It's Not Good

Notes: There is a long build-up of music before this song starts, but will release it as a separate tune of chaotic noise [The Mass, it's called]. Will bleed into this on the album.

No.

But did you like the song?

I like the chorus a lot, I just feel like it loses momentum in other parts. I don't know if the more meandering sections are intentionally meandering or not, so I'm not saying you guys did a bad job or anything, I just know that it's just not something that works for me.

I like how it kicks off, especially the way the Stonesy gat is playing off the kind of wah-wahish keys starting at 0:08, and I really like the distorted treatment on those early vocals. It can be tough to get fuzz right on vocals and whatever you did there works a treat. The first time I feel the song is held back is where that keyboard riff from 0:24-0:38 seems to fight the propulsion of the rest of the music around it. The chord progression and rhythm is building a good tension but the key riff/solo feels like it's bumping back and forth kind of aimlessly, like it's going in circles while the rest of the band has left it behind.

I like the breakdown that starts in about 0:39 but it feels like it's in the wrong place, too early in the song, and then it starts feeling aimless around 0:55 too. Like, a breakdown needs the song to have been "up" so that it has somewhere to break "down" from, and since the previous section hadn't got me high enough I feel like it continues to stay too grounded. I think there are good things happening, just not at the right time for me.

But then I really like everything that's going on in that chorus from 1:08. Everything. I like how the beat changes and punches up in the second half of it (from the forest fires to the silver linings part). I like how the vocal melody (and mirroring keyboard melody) works much better with that chord progression than that earlier keyboard riff/solo does and the way that kickass harmony on "noooot goooood" pays off against those snare hits is gold.

My favourite breakdown is after the second chorus, about 2:12, where the drums drop out to cymbals and then come back in with the keys stabbing playfully, and then that fucking sweeeeeeeeet bassline rolls on in and the gat slides into position on its wing. All the way from 2:12 to the end is aces. I have to say also that I'm sure I'd get more out of the song if I was in a chemically altered state, but these days I play it pretty straight in that area so it could be that this type of song arrangement just isn't for me anymore.
