E3 2010 - What Looked Good to You?

A buddy and I decided on a whim to go down to LA and subject ourselves to the insanity that was E3 this past week, and it was an eye-opening experience to be sure. Just the sheer volume of stuff on display was a little overwhelming and 3 days on the show floor seemed like way too little time to play and try everything that was on offer. Some highlights for me:

3DS - I'm not a mobile gamer by any stretch... I own a PSP but it's been collecting dust for months now. This thing may have turned me around. Even after spending an hour and a half in line it was impossible not to be impressed by this little gem. When it works right, the 3d effect on this thing is cool as hell and even with the limited offerings in terms of playable material at the booth, I walked away from my time with the 3DS with a smile on my face

Sony Move - Having tried both Sony and Microsoft's motion control solutions, I came away leaning more towards Sony. Move's focus on gaming rather than party/family/casual gameplay just felt better to me. Time will tell if either of these is still being talked about next year, but Move just felt like a better solution.

Rockband 3 - I went into MTV's booth a little skeptical about whether RB3 would bring anything new to the table, but walked out convinced. Keytars, Pro mode, and vastly improved searching and playlist creation functions make RB3 an early entry on my must-have list from this E3 show.

Epic Mickey - Warren Spector's involvement in this game had always given it a peripheral spot on my radar, but seeing it in action made me a believer. It's a wii game featuring Disney characters... it couldn't be any further from my scope of gaming interests, but I think I might have to dust off my Wii for this one.

Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium Online - This is a personal choice for me. I've been a 40k tabletop player for almost 20 years, and one of the things I always hoped for was a really good persistent online multiplayer game in that universe. Info was scarce on the ground as far as how the game works, what it's going to cost, etc... but just the thought of a 40k MMO/MMFPS is enough to make me nerd out.

So what looked good to you guys?

Honestly? Nothing wowed me. The 3DS looks stupid; I couldn't really care less about a new Zelda or Mario game. The motion controllers all seem too expensive and not all that revolutionary. And none of the games I saw impressed me. I was hoping Valve would have a bigger surprise than Portal 2 on PS3. Overall, I thought it was a pretty lackluster E3.

About the only thing I'm halfway interested in is Rock Band 3.

How did the Move feel compared to the Wii in terms of movement accuracy?

I'm very interested in the 3DS. And I'm not all that into portables.

Konami has a new Silent Hill sequel on the way:
http://kotaku.com/5565483/silent-hil...60-ps3-in-2011
It looks quite similar to the early games, a shame cause I had wished it would be a bit more like Shattered Memories.

The 3DS is the big winner for me, especially with news of the Legend of Zelda: OoT remake. Looking at the list of release games, it seems like they will be offerring a pretty sweet line-up. Otherwise, there wasn't too much for me. Kinect looks like an overpriced flop and Move will have to show me more before I buy it.
The Sony Move was something that I could have cared less about a year ago, but now I'm having second thoughts about it being just a Wii rip-off. Well, it is still a Wii rip-off, except with the potential to be used in ways we all hoped the Wii would be when it was originally announced.

I liked...
Fist Of The North Star: Ken's Rage
Marvel Vs Capcom 3
Mortal Kombat
Batman The Brave And The Bold

Game I would have loved to see...King Of Fighters XIII!
Yeah, I forgot about the new Mortal Kombat. If it stays as good as it looks I might need to pre-order that sucker.
For me:

Deus Ex Human Revolution is very much high on the must have list.
Mortal Kombat 9
Fist of the North Star
Fable III
and Project Dust (not the platformer, but the Populous like one coming for Live from UBIsoft)
Fable III
Final Fantasy XIV

3DS looks interesting, but I'd have to see it in front of my face to really get it. Kinect looks cool, but I want hardcore gaming for it not party games.

Marvel vs Capcom 3
Oops...I left off...James Bond: Goldeneye, and NBA Jam!

The free form cutting in MGS rising looks great.

Any gameplay from Deus Ex?
3DS looks fantastic. I tend to think there's something to what Iwata was saying about how 3D can enhance gameplay by making it easier to determine the spacial relationships required when targeting objects in a shooter or a racing game. Those who are already great at those genres won't maybe notice a difference but it will probably help people like me who aren't super-great gamers.

They were giving a guided tour of the gameplay behind closed doors. I didn't see it personally, but my friend did and he said it was consistent with the stuff shown in the trailer and showed the game as a 3rd person over the shoulder style action title. He said they didn't show any inventory functions or RPG style progression... not to say that that isn't in the game. It's still pretty early on that one.

Rockband 3 and Epic Mickey really surprised me; the gameplay of Epic Mickey - being able to alter the landscape on the fly on such a large scale - makes me think that game could be a huge hit.

MGS:Rising looked awesome. Hopefully the entire environment is destructible.

Goldeneye. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. True Crime (Hong Kong) - would it have been too much to ask to have a non-white protagonist in this one?

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Gran Turismo 5.

More motion control competition will lead to better games, so while I'm not wowed by Move yet, or the Kinect game selection, I look forward to the next couple years of motion control development. And hopefully "games" like Dance Central hit, because anything that gets kids (and adults) off our fat asses is a bonus. I think Dance Central will be a little more accessible for casual gamers than DDR was.

Blegh.

Pretend all these random thoughts on E3 2010 are just my Twitter feed:

I'd be more interested in Castlevania if it had some RPG elements. A pure God of War clone would be a disappointment.

Epic Mickey looks great. This new Disney is full of surprises. I hope this game lives up to the promise, and with Spector's name attached it should.

The Portal 2 announcement reminds me I HAVE TO PLAY PORTAL.

Rage is amazing tech. I'm really interested in only that aspect of the game. I'd like to see more games made with this engine.

Kirby is a really interesting mix of super-cutesiness and insanely challenging platforming. Who is this game designed for-- autistic Japanese schoolgirls?

Judging Zelda by what was shown is gonna be tough. Reports all say the Motion-Plus controls feel great. But the lighting in the demo doesn't look finished and we have no idea how the game world is structured or if it takes place in boring ol' Hyrule. Way too early to tell wtf they're up to.

Never a Kid Icarus fanboy but that looks like Space Harrier/Sin & Punishment kind of awesome.

I didn't see it first-hand. I had a brain fart and left my pass at the hotel on day 3. My buddy saw it while I was riding a taxi back and forth through downtown LA. I'll ask for clarification from him, but he said that gameplay was over-the-shoulder 3rd person with a gun in one hand and what he assumed were nano powers on the other. He didn't mention specifically that 3rd person was for takedowns.

Move felt to me much more precise than anything I have experienced on a Wii, but my Wii has been mothballed since long before Motion Plus was released so YMMV. The only direct comparison I can make is through bowling games. On Wii bowling I constantly felt like i was fighting the controls. On the Move's Brunswick bowling I was picking up spares after a couple of frames and strikes a few after that. It felt a lot more natural.

A couple of dark horse games that caught my eye were Sega's Vanquish and Squeenix's Front Mission Evolved. Vanquish looks kinda like a super-detailed and smoothly animated Japanese take on the Gears of War formula, and Front Mission looks to give the giant robot combat fans something to love.

Biggest disappointment of the show for me was that Bethesda chose to not show any of their games to the public. I pleaded our case at the booth but they were having none of it. They had 4 games that I REALLY wanted to see (Fallout: New Vegas, Brink, Rage, and Hunted: The Demon's Forge) but we were summarily denied access to them. Shame really.

Journey (from the Flower guys) looks really awesome.

Child of Eden, successor to champion arcade retina-fuck Rez, looks beyond amazing, and seems to be the only Kinect-enabled game worth a damn.

Hot Pursuit was probably my favorite arcade racer on PS2, so I am greatly pleased by news of the new Criterion-developed entry.

Pretty much agree with Zero that it's too little to play and try everything, but from what I saw and played, here are my thoughts:

GoldenEye:
Who better than Activision to redo this game? They know how to make FPS's, and the general consumer will see the GoldenEye name and pick it up instantly. Brilliant move from Nintendo, and doesn't hurt that the game plays just as good, if not better, than it did in 1997. It will be interesting to see how Craig fits in the story, but I think I might invest in one of those black Wii's come November.

Medal of Honor:
Not that this is a bad game, but I'm either disappointed it doesn't play differently than Battlefield or Call of Duty or burned on 'modern war' shooters. Either way, nothing about this led me to believe this would be the game to dethrone Call of Duty or even Battlefield from it's superpowered status. Again, I'm sure this'll be a good game, and from what I played it was, but it wasn't anything life-changing.

God of War: Ghost of Sparta:
It's more God of War. That's not a bad thing. The demo felt a little too much like the first game in the series, but takes a turn for the creative midway through. Then again, God of War III is a real tough act to follow. Bottom line, this will still sell and thankfully it's not a cheap cash-in.

Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds:
Not every character was available, but I kicked out a combination of Ryu, Dante, and Deadpool. Truth be told, it's pretty awesome to be back in the driver's seat for this series and it brought back some pretty solid memories, and it plays almost like Street Fighter IV. The thing I noticed is that reversals feel a tad more natural and everything, and I mean everything, can and will be countered. Ryu's animations are a tad different from SSFIV, which I wouldn't count as a bad thing. I'd have been a bit more excited about this game, until I saw this...

Mortal Kombat:
No, they didn't have it to play, but it didn't matter. Remember what it was like for most of us, being a little kid, seeing that Mortal Kombat machine in the arcade and thinking this is the greatest thing you've ever seen? Yeah, that's essentially what this demo was like. Maybe nostalgia is playing into it, maybe not, but this looks like it could be the best MK since the second. Color that in with the interesting 'reboot' direction the series is taking, and you've got the recipe for the most anticipated game of next year. This won the show for me, and has me wanting to wait in line now.

Homefront:
My worry here is that the idea behind this game will be more intriguing than the actual game itself. Don't get me wrong, it looks like a pretty solid FPS, but the whole idea of Korea uniting and the U.S. collapsing is both haunting and interesting for any medium. What I do like is that they seem to be focusing on the tiny moments between the action (something MW2 completely muffed up) and making sure we care about the people in this world. I also like how they're also intent on making you feel like you're in the biggest shitstorm in your life. Anticipation for this is high, but comes with the asterisk of "need to play for myself."

Killzone 3D:
I'm sold on 3D gaming after this. I don't support the gimmick for film (I think it's interesting for big 'event' pictures, but that's it) and want it to die a death for that medium. I can however see myself enjoying it for gaming, and if Killzone is anything to go in, I don't have to worry about much. If any series has improved over each installment, it would be this one as KZ3 looks to be the best of the bunch, and took thunder away from Medal of Honor for me. Will this be the heavy hitting FPS franchise Sony needs? The cards more than likely say 'YES!'

Those are really the highlights for me right now. I didn't try out 3DS because the lines where literally bumper to bumper and there was so much to play (and I was also balancing it with school as well.) But having been to both Comic Con and E3, I can honestly say I enjoy the latter a hell of a lot more. Can't wait for next year.

I think your friend was bullshitting you. It's first person, but pulls into third when you enter cover, initiate a takedown, or use an 'awesome' aug. It's definitely not Bioshock style dual-handed combat. Eidos-Montreal knows full well that if they pull something like that then a legion of pissed off fanboys would be 'round shortly to burn down their offices.

Probably true Faf. I can't say this enough but I didn't see the game in action myself. According to Giant Bomb however:

Quote:
It's still played from the first-person perspective, mostly, but it does go to a full third-person view when you're behind cover or dashing from one point of cover to another.
They also mention the takedowns. Reading up on it makes me think it'll be along the same lines as Rainbow 6 Vegas in that you can shoot FPS but if you're in cover (and you probably SHOULD be) it'll switch to 3rd person over the shoulder.

Looks like someone got some shaky-cam footage of the DX demo. Parts of it look decent, but the takedown system is as silly as I was afraid it would be. And more in-game cutscenes and scripted combat encounters than there really should be.

[edit]Actually, the more I think about it, the more I fucking hate the takedown system. Cross-posting from another board: Now that I've seen it in action the takedown system is a far worse design decision then I could have possibly imagined. They're cool the first time, but I was getting bored with them before the demo had ended, and that doesn't bode well for their usage through the entire game. I understand the desire to show the player cool things, but that should come secondary to maintaining the player's immersion, and they've essentially put in a 'break immersion' button with the takedowns, and they're removing control from the player for a second or so each time one is initiated (and sometimes several seconds, as in the skylight drop bomb scatter sequence), and removing control from the player during the course of regular gameplay is a Design 101 Don't.

Somebody's going to have to do a non-lethal playthrough and figure out the percentage of the playthrough time is spent watching takedown animations as opposed to actually playing.

And you shouldn't be able to do them from wherever the fuck, like the double takedown. It almost seems like you can trigger them from any distance, as long as the enemies aren't aware of you when you trigger them, and that's just doubly fucking stupid.

[edit2]Looks like they've been removed.

E3 gave me lots of little things to look forward to, which is good, because the big announcements underwhelmed. Little things like Journey, Valkyria II, and Patapon 3. I wish Child of Eden wasn't entangled with the Kinect, if only for its own sake. Eat Them, Dead Nation, and PixelJunk Shooter 2 are some of the wild cards.

The big announcements outside of Rock Band 3 and 3DS were all forgettable, but this was the funniest E3 ever. It was like walking through a middle school science fair where half the kids obviously did their projects the night before. UBISOFT PROUDLY ANNOUNCES: My Earth Mother, an interactive eco-experience! And then they wheel out a plastic bucket of dirt with a rabbit-ear-antenna sticking out of it. I'm looking forward to Ubisoft's 2011 presentation more than anything else now.

It's also dropping on the PS3 (in 3D no less); it'll be fine. You could play Rez with a vibrator. Whatever works.

I think Rock Band 3 was the most impressive in E3 this year, and Kinect was the most disappointing.
Personally, I get much more out of reports and videos from the show floor than I ever get from the press briefings. The briefings are fun to watch, but I was much more excited to see gameplay demos and interviews from later on in E3.

In no particular order, the games that got me excited this year were Vanquish, Red Faction Armageddon, Rage, Epic Mickey, Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom, Enslaved, Bulletstorm, Portal 2, LittleBigPlanet 2, PotC: Armada of the Damned, and LoZ: Skyward Sword.

As for the tech this year, both Move and Kinect look interesting, but they don't really have anything that will get me to buy one. However, the 3DS has me very interested at this point. I definitely want to see how well that thing works, and it certainly has a ton of big games coming out for it.

After seeing the Kinect/Child of Eden demo, I was glad to read that the Kinect controls are optional. Supposedly the game plays just fine with the Xbox 360 controller, and that of course allows them to combine vibration with the sound and visuals.
I know it doesn't require the Kinect, but people might see it as That Kinect Game, which might end up being bad.
