Jaden Smith: over-entitled punk or...y'know, 11-year-old kid?

Thread Starter
This EW article, complete with link to his recent Letterman appearance, raises a few interesting points about Will Smith 2.0, and I'm curious as to what you all think about the little guy.

The Letterman clip is interesting in that Jaden seems to be aiming for a surly/smart-ass cool kind of vibe but isn't quite able to pull it off. But, of course, that could have something to do with the fact that he's 11 FREAKING YEARS OLD! Christ, put me on Letterman at that age and I'd be lying in the fetal position in a puddle of my own urine by the second question.

What do you guys reckon?

He's the son of the biggest movie star in the world and he's the lead in a movie with Jackie Chan as his sifu. I'd think he'd carry himself the way he does.

Being young isn't easy and being an actor at that age even less so. It will be interesting to see his maturation continue.

I think the kid has a glimmer of his dad's natural charm. He's just had less time to cultivate it in an effective way because, as Tommy says, he's an 11 year old kid.

Yeah, if I had an untouchable movie star as my dad and my own number one movie, I might be an insufferable little bitch, too.

I don't understand the up-roar. Its not like he was surly or rude to Dave and came off like a little punk. When Dakota Fanning was younger, she held herself like a 40 year old woman, like Meryl Streep was possessing her body. Somebody in the comments thread brought up that he doesn't have his dad's eyes, which are warm and have a friendly gleam in them. The kid was obviously coached too.

He reminds me of many 11 year olds the way he acts. They just don't get to showcase their obnoxious behavior on tv. He shouldn't be judged harshly.

Atleast he has talent. I thought he was good in The Pursuit of Happyness and it seems he carried The Karate Kid well. And you can totally see Will Smith in him which could be part of the problem.

I'm sure alot of the hate has to do with nepotism. If people want to knock someone for nepotism is should be Rumer Willis. She has no business acting and she keeps getting jobs.

I think his daughter takes more after him than his son does.

Wow, the resemblance is pretty striking.

That clip didn't come off as insufferable to me. It came off as a kid who was taught how to banter with Dave and he was better at it then Dave thought he would be.

I thought it was hilarious and not having seen Happyness nor Karate Kid I cannot place my finger on whether the only part of it I felt was off was that he was a snotty brat or just a flat actor.

The whole "spoiled brat, daddy bought Little Lord Fauntleroy a summer blockbuster" backlash meme is just an accelerated version of the chew-em-up-and-spit-em-out child actor career process. It'll be interesting to see if Smith manages to build a career and an image of his own as he matures, or if the tabloids have already decided that the corn harvest must grow.

I saw nothing bad here. I found him to be pretty charming.

For some reason, I thought the Smiths only had those two young kids. Didn't know they had the older son.

Nom noose! Domi-noose!

THEY don't. It's Will's from a previous marriage. That poor kid was born 10 years too early.

The boy needs to get a Boondocks movie going right quick. I think Will Smith can make it happen.

The cynic in me thinks that a cute white son of a white actor would not be getting this alleged hate.
The EW article speaks to that, as a lot of this hate is a few steps away from "uppity" and "he oughta know his place!"

"Arrogant" is often code for "uppity."

This whole thread boggles my mind.

Yes, but who would play Huey?

I honestly don't think it has much to do with race. People just hate the concept of inheriting your big break instead of working for it. The only people I can think of off the top of my head who don't get much shit for it are Nicholas Cage and Jason Schwartzman and they kind of went out of their way to obfuscate where they came from. There's also Norah Jones, but she actually didn't get any help at all from her dad or even know him.

Whoops. That's what I get for skimming. Thanks.

It?!

ETA: just watched the video. The beginning was awkward. I didn't really get Jaden's "joke" about having to move seats, but he comes off as a kid trying to show some swagger but not really knowing how to pull it off yet. Seemed harmless.

The part that I found funniest was completely unintentional.

"His son is named Daniel."

"Oh?"

(puts photo of Macchio away)

Damn that Coppola gene.

Yeah, after the clip:

Dave: "Yes, his son is named Daniel after the character he played in the original."

Jaden: "Yeah, that's what I was trying to say. But you didn't seem to get it."

I lol'd.

I hope he ends in a black list for being so smart ass not really

I always find it very disturbing how often adults get their panties in a bunch over the actions of famous children.

Well shit, Schwartzman did such a great job of it that I had literally no frikkin idea of his familial connections until this moment. Huh.

He is over entitled, as I've stated before on other threads. He wears designer sunglasses everywhere he goes (even at night), and has been raised as a millionaire. The films that I've seen him in, he was particularly terrible and seemed to have a "cooler than the material" attitude in at least one of his movies. Considering the fact that he wouldn't have these jobs if it were not for the influence of his dad (another "actor" who seems content to coast on his name and not his talent*), his lack of acting skill is especially painful.

*For the record, Will Smith is talented but he doesn't seem to care about using it. He just likes playing "Big Willie" in every single role, and it's really getting stale IMHO. Do some actual acting, Mr Smith. You're the last movie star, and you can get anything in the world greenlit. At least Tom Cruise took risks when he was on top.

Eh, I think Pursuit of Happyness and Seven Pounds were pretty risky considering Smith's image. Whatever you think of him, he has changed a lot in his roles since the late 90's. Men in Black Will Smith could never have played I Am Legend Will Smith.

This is actually exactly what I thought of his performance in The Karate Kid.
