I searched up and down for a thread about this, and all I found was a thread about the trailer that had some chatter about the movie. If I've missed the thread with the review, apologies.
Anyway, this is not a good movie. It's a movie with some good parts, but ultimately, the gimmick -- two men and their missing sons tied together by the same serial killer but divided by a span of 50 years -- doesn't really work. The Jon Hamm half is better than the Josh Lucas half, but that's because I think Hamm, as a police chief trying to investigate one death while grieving his missing son, is doing more interesting work than Lucas, who's a widower with a retarded son in the 50s. Hamm's role is somewhat similar to Draper, but there's a moment in particular near the end where I was struck by just how good an actor he can be.
The whole thing feels very rote, and slow, and aside from Hamm, there isn't a lot of good acting going on. James Van Der Beek is quite good, though, as a man suspected in the death of Hamm's son. He would have been an out there but effective choice for Freddy Kruger -- guy's made a nice second career for himself playing psychos.
The music sucks, too.
It's a movie worth seeing if you're a Jon Hamm fan like me, or if you want to see Van Der Beek do his thing, but it's not really worth your time. Two and a half stars.
