Rose. A short film

Hey everyone, I recently directed a six minute short with some friends. We shot it over a period of 3-4 months (whenever we could find the extra time), and I was actually really happy with how it turned out.

I was considering sending it to different festivals/contests in the area (I'm from Massachusetts). I googled some, and they seem to be numerous. Any tips on how to select suitable festivals? I'm wondering if anyone has any insight into the festival circuit at all, because I'm strongly considering producing a few more shorts in a similar vein and going the festival route with them as well.

Here's a link to my movie:

Click on the video tab to watch it.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts/criticisms on the film as well. Thanks.

Your first stop should be www.withoutabox.com

You can fill in a full profile for your film and very easily search the literal thousands and thousands of festivals all over the country. It will allow you to submit all of your materials, and then you just have to ship a DVD with your code on it.

Good job! The story was a bit predictable, but in terms of the look and feel of the film it was great.

Thanks for that website Renn, it's awesome. It should be really useful.

And thanks for watching Diva, I'm glad you liked it. I put most of my focus of the film on the look and feel (I watched A LOT of noir before and during shooting), so it's awesome that you enjoyed that part of it. Writing is really tough for me (as it is for pretty much everyone), so I wanted to emphasize atmosphere over plot. I'd love to find other writers to collaborate with in the future, but I don't know very many. Haha.

Thanks again.

I liked this a lot. Do you have it up on Vimeo? Facebook's encoding process seems to have created some jello interlacing.

I appreciate the fact that you went all in with no dialogue. Whenever someone makes an indie drama these days they think they need to fill the run time with some sort of stylized dialogue, when in fact being patient and allowing the audience to process what happens (like you have here) is the way to go.

Hey Kingcujo, thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed it and I also really dislike forced stylized dialogue in indie films.

That interlacing problem on facebook seems to happen on some computers but not all of them. It's odd. I haven't uploaded it to vimeo yet (though I probably will) because I'm not sure what film festivals/contests I'm sending this to yet, and I know some have rules about posting videos online so I don't want to post it in too many places yet. I'm also gonna try and put together a website where I can post all the shorts I make up, but that's still in the planning stages. If I do put it up on vimeo, I'll post a link here because I know the quality will be superior.

Film festivals are not only a scam and a waste of money, they're also virtually impossible to get into, but: withoutabox will put your name and movie on imdb (permanently if you do get into a festival) and then you can link to that from your facebook profile and like write your imdb biography and stuff--so I have to recommend it.

I've definitely heard some film festival horror stories, so I'm not wildly optimistic about how it will go. On the other hand, the prospect of getting my film shown in an actual theater with an audience is way too cool to pass up. I'll give it a shot for that alone. I'm going to try and make a website soon where I can put all my films up. That will probably be more useful than film festivals.

I appreciated this as well. Very effective.

The Facebook link isn't working for me. It gives up and tells me the connection is taking too long.

Submit to a few fests, but be really picky on your own part. If you have a specific state festival they will often times not charge at all for submissions if you are a resident of said state. Don't be dismayed by rejection, getting a short in nowadays is tricky business.

Also, if you have a nice art house theater in your town, or a smaller chain see what you can do about renting the theater out.

We did that for a cast and crew screening of my latest shorts and it was quite nice. The funny thing I discovered was that my sensibilities had prepped the films more theatrical exhibition than the intended web distribution, but that is another matter...

Setting up the youtube and Vimeo channel isn't too much work, and you'll probably want to do it on top of your own site anyways.

Thanks! It's still listed as a private video at the moment though. I don't have access to it.
