It's moving! It's alive! It's alive! - Page 2

Congrats again, sir. She looks peaceful now, but in two years, you'll confront a beast that has her shape, but shrieks at you when you give her the "wrong" plate at breakfast. Ah, 2-year old girls (my wife is attempting to get ours to sleep as I type).

Alex, on behalf of the NY & NJ chapter of "Chewers Whom You've Partied With", I'd like to extend a big huge congratulations on behalf of Tim, Iggy and myself. Much love to you and the wife, hon - that is one beautiful baby!

To the one of 2 writers left at CHUD worth actually logging into the forums for.....congrats!!

Congratulations, she's adorable and precious! I think my ovaries exploded.

Congrats! Missed this thread. She's adorable.

How is the first couple of days at home going, Alex? Are you two sleeping in shifts?
Congrats, Alex! Our first just passed the 11 month mark, but I can still remember how hellish the first few weeks were. Hope you guys are staying sane.

Staying fairly sane- have a lot of family and friends taking care of stuff around the house and helping us take naps and such. Last night though we had to bring her to the hospital for jaundice. It was both heartbreaking and hysterical- for anyone that doesn't know, the treatment is to basically put her in a baby tanning bed. There's a creepy room full of babies under lights, with bandages on their heads to protect their eyes. She's still there, might be till nighttime. Going to head over in a little bit.

But otherwise she's been real cool so far, only crying when she's hungry, already trying to life her head and look around the room, which is surprising us.

Thanks a lot for the comments, everyone, they really mean a lot. My god... I thought getting married turned me into a gigantic pussy but that was nothing compared to this. I'm dangerous right now, carrying around a photo album full of pictures of her and just daring some fool ask me to see what she looks like.

We are utterly surprised as well- most babies are some funny-looking creatures. Funny thing though is that she came out with a conehead. Not so much a conehead though, she looked more like Pumpkinhead. Long, Alien-ish head. Snapped back into place in a day but it was pretty funny to see at first.

Oh man this whole "raising a girl" thing is terrifying me. As I told the nurses at the hospital while changing her the first time, I'm still not sure how all this stuff works.

We're breastfeeding (we'll I'M not, but you get my drift...) so it's hard. But we had to supplement with formula yesterday cause she wasn't getting enough just yet. But wife's started pumping so I can take over and let her sleep a few hours here and there.

Most important advice: wipe front to back.

I still don't get the whole "wipe front to back" thing. Poop goes everywhere, in everything. Does it really make that big a difference?

We had to do the Tanning Bed thing. Very terrifying for something pretty routine.
I refer you to JVC's signature about girls pooping from their vagina.

Also, glad to hear she's active and well-behaved (for the moment!).

Indeed. Also scary was seeing how they take blood from a baby. I didn't know the usual, preferred method is to CUT OPEN THEIR FEET AND SQUEEZE THE BLOOD OUT. Poor kid had to go through that four times yesterday.

FUCK. All from the same spot, or did they have to draw from different areas?
It's standard, and usually from the same spot, and also a tiny amount, but man, when it's your kid, it's terrifying. I thought I was gonna punch the shit outta the nurse. Good luck with the jaundice thing, Alex, I'm sure she'll be home again soon.

YES!!!

Anakin's Dad was probably thinking about that SNL skit.

I've already congratulated you on Facebook, but it never hurts to say it again. Your daughter is beautiful and I have no doubt she'll be home from the hospital in no time.

Congratulations Alex! Having daughters is challenging; they tend to be much more whiny and manipulative than boys in their early years. Both of my daughters (ages 13 and 10 now) are just as messy as any guy though, so at least I have something in common with them :P All I can give you for advice is to realize that kids don't misbehave or not sleep because they hate you. Sometimes your daughter is going to cry and scream for seemingly no reason at all, and the natural impulse to sell her and buy a cat instead will pass. I promise! It takes until they become teens for them to hate you because you're you. Even then, the hate doesn't last long enough for you to finish filling out the "give up for adoption" paperwork.

By the end, her heels were raw from all the different spots. It's brutal to watch.

Yes. Poop + pressure in the wrong place = ascending vaginal infection which can lead to bladder infection... which can lead to kidney infection... which can led to kidney failure and death. So, yeah. Sure you can only do so much when they poop a vast amount of liquid poo into a diaper that holds it against their little bodies, but we were not intended to be diapered and for our manure to be smooshed against us.

A very very very big congrats to Alex and Sam. I am so sorry she had such a long labor but I'm sure it was worth it to get that beautiful angel. It's nice to see her working on jewelry again, too.

Hope the pumping and shared feeding works. It makes my life MUCH easier to be able to have my husband wake up with the baby half the night, or let me take a nap without having to wake up to feed in the middle.

Take lots of pictures. They change so fast! It's amazing!

Attachment parenting ideas. Dr. Sears' Baby Book. Wear the baby, co-sleep.

With co-sleeping hopefully you got a crib that one of the sides slides up and down. Remove that side. Usually the mattresses can be changed to different heights. Put it at the same height as your mattress. Put the crib beside the bed and your wife can pull the baby to her in the middle of the night, when she latches on they both can go back to sleep.

A lot less stressful on the marriage throughout this time.

This. Granted, it's your kid and you're going to want to take pics, but take it seriously. Learn how to take some good shots. They're so completely worth your while.

Also, prepare for the white/grey hairs. It's gonna happen sooner rather than later.
