I looked back a year, and couldn't find any "what the hell is this book" threads, so forgive me if I missed it, but this is driving me batshit insane.

I read it when I was 10 or 11, I think (so back in 88 or 89 b/c I'M OLD) and it was about this little girl, her name was Julie or Julia, and she lived with her aunt who ended up marrying this man who had 2 or 3 daughters of his own and it turned out he was some sort of religious nutcase- the family wasn't allowed outside before dark, they homeschooled, the windows were painted black to keep the light out and to keep the neighbors from seeing in. The scene I remember the most clearly was where Julie/Julia found this one window that wasn't painted, just covered by a bookcase, and she opened it and this homeless cat came in. The girls weren't allowed to have pets, so they tried to keep it on the dee-low but the crazy ass father found out about the kitty and he either killed it in front of the girls or just left the dead body for them to find. Eventually, Julie/Julia is going to run away and one of the sisters is going to go with her, and there was something about Rio de Janeiro figuring into that part of it.

WHAT THE FUCK WAS I READING? Whoever knows, I will seriously send you a box of homemade chocolate chip cookies. I won't even lick the spoon when I'm making them.

Also, I know I'm up for the "Longest Ridiculous Run-on Sentence" award, and I gleefully accept the nomination.
