How is this not a derail?

By the way, I'm still waiting for on topic tattoo advice on the questions I asked.

To answer your question kate....

Like I said at the start of the thread...it took me from when I was 18 until this january to finally get mine. I'd wanted it since high school...and it took 7 years for me to finally get the courage up to do it. It also helped to have someone nudge me a little bit. My girlfriend and I went together to get our tattoos...her third and my first. She held my hand the whole time...because frankly I was scared shitless. My biggest fear is needles...so i was freaking out a bit. But, I will say...I was actually surprised by how much it DIDNT hurt.

Thanks for the info! I guess it just takes time, based on what you say, to decide to get one. I don't feel strongly one way or the other about needles, but I am paralyzed by the fear of tattoo regret. Oh well, thanks again. At least now I know where to post if I ever get one

If you think you're going to regret it, then its not the right thing to do. It has to feel entirely right. And mine did. It looks amazing on me and I dont regret it at all.

Yes, you have to realize that unless you come into some money and can afford tattoo removal, the design is going to be on you until you die. I'm comforted by that knowledge, but it would be messed up if I had some ex-boyfriend's name on my tit for the rest of my life. Even covering it up with more ink, it's still there.

I also feel good knowing that the two tattoos I will have are going to be on my until I die. They're important symbols to me.

That came out really well, Slater. How long did it take to get that done?
About four hours.

That's freaking awesome.

Ok, so, I have a tattoo question on which I'd appreciate some answers from those 'in the know'

The other week I met a woman age 40, roughly, who seemed perfectly nice and normal for the most part (though there was something about her that seemed slightly nervous, but in a way where she was trying to cover it by being overly polite and well mannered). It turns out she is actually the half sister of a teacher I had in middleschool, who was really nice and has since moved from the area. Here is the thing though: This woman had a tear drop tattoo under her right eye, in a place that THE SHIELD tells me means that she has killed someone. Is this possible? Can that tattoo mean something else? I am not someone who is clued in to the streetz outside of what I glean from movies TV and the news, so please forgive my ignorance on this subject.

Impossible to know without further information (as to her specifically); however, certain tattoos have lost their meaning. Once, that one indeed signified a life taken (either mourning the loss of a loved one through murder or that one has taken a life through murder). Now? Most likely that she was in prison.

Here are 2 of my tattoos.

I have a third on my back (a sword going down my spine) and the 4th (and most likely final one) is still in the planning stages.

Barr, didn't you say in another thread you were HIV+? I apologize if I am remembering the thread incorrectly but if I am who is going to tattoo you?

Perhaps you should get a little better acquainted with how tattoo artists sanitize their equipment.

Although both of those tattoos were done before I was infected.

I'm aware and wasn't being snarky, just wondering what kind of state health code would allow it. It seems to be an unnecessary risk to the artist at the very least and a potential health code headache for the shop at the worst.

I already have one that needs to be colored in. I might get this for my second tattoo:

Seriously. You're an idiot. HIV isn't the only bloodbourne pathogen (by far). It's by their sanitization requirements that they avoid potential health code issues.

Again, well aware of the bloodborne pathogens out there that might be a risk factor during a tattoo.

Sanitizing machines and using new needles still doesn't fix the fact that there are rubber gloves that have blood on them, paper towels or whatever they are using to wipe ink away as they work that has blood on them, trays and tables/chairs that may come into contact with blood.

I would ask the same thing about someone who was Hep B+ and would still wonder about the cleanup that will be required of the entire work area, not just the needles and machines.

Fuck you, though.

How about you cool it and knock it the fuck off?

Tattoo arists by me won't tattoo you if you have Hep, or HIV.

How about we actually go back to showing and talking about skin art instead of trying to guess what laws the county board of health has?

Back on topic:

One thing that always cracked me up was seeing dudes 19-20, mainly guys featured in Alternative Press that are just covered in ink. I always wondered how in the hell did they get the money for that? Plus, I've got this weird fear of being permenantly locked into something like that.

Especially when so many of the tattoos those types of guys (and girls) usually get are pretty hollow. It's like they're getting a uniform branded onto them; I'm sure that's part of the point for a lot of them, but I have to wonder how many of their heroes - who probably inspired the move - did the same thing.

Same here. I kinda admire the bravery of people who get it done, though. Not to mention like the fact they're that moved to get it done in the first place.
Also, I'd like to add that there's something intrinsically fucked about getting inked in places that are effectively job destroyers. What motivates someone to get inked on the neck or back of the hands? You know someone is truly fucked when they ink their face.

I'd rather spend the cash on nice suits.
Unless you aspire to be a member of Rancid or Voyager's second in command, Ed.
I guess my apathy towards being inked is also related to the fact nothing I enjoy or believe in could be summed up in a symbol. This, compounded with lack of ethnic/religious/ancestoral identity really seals the deal

Tis the life of the Yank bastard.

Actually I asked quite legitimate questions and was as polite as one could be when bringing up HBarr's illness. I hate that he contracted the virus and was wondering about the logistics of going about getting a tattoo if you are indeed HIV+.

He decided to be an asshole about it and I called him on it. I don't need to cool down from a damn thing, thank you very much.
How about it doesn't concern you and it's none of your goddamn business? Do you work for the CDC? Are you neighbors? Otherwise, your questions are irrevelent.

Once again. You may want to spend a little time getting to know the policies and procedures. It's hardly *my* responsibility to teach you. More so, as I don't work in that industry, my knowledge would be incomplete at best. Hence, my you're an idiot comment (still applicable, by the way). You're still an asshole and lazy at best. You see, there's this thing called the internet. You are in fact on it right now. Shall I Google the answer for you?

Your tone, when asking was offensive. Granted, tone is difficult to read on the internet, but you and I have a bit of a history (I just *love* health care professionals who can rationalize their "costs.").

Still, it comes down to sheer laziness. You asking for information that is easily searchable on the web. I suggest you learn to do so and perhaps you *might* avoid snarky responses.

I go through phases where my interest in tattoo's peaks and wanes, but right now at least they've been on my mind quite a bit in the past few weeks. Recently I saw some extremely enviable and awesome tats and I'm kind of toying with the idea of getting one as part of my Year of Revolution

It's 82.24% certain I'll lose interest or fail to follow through, but I'll keep you updated should I come to any decision on the matter. I feel like my life needs a change and a tattoo could be that change, but it could also be a terrible idea so who knows.

Open question: how acceptable is a nerdy tattoo? Like, a videogame or LOTR related on? We're not talking full sleeve here, but small-ish.
Don't.
Yeah, that's how you end up the subject of internet mockery.
I mentioned this in a different tattoo thread as I missed this one, but I got my first tattoo the other day. It actually didn't hurt at all (which means at least that wont stop me from getting another).

I guess you could say its a nerdy tattoo as it is a reference to Blade Runner, so I've gone against Misfit's advice. Mock me if you must.

Second question: how much does it cost to get this chest-filling portrait of Gimli lazed off me?

So I had someone ask me if my tattoo was of a pineapple yesterday at work. I was like "wtf...really? a pineapple? It's a scottish thistle."

Not to compound that frustration but when I first saw it months ago I immediately thought of a pineapple DumDum lollipop.

I just got mine on Saturday and I have some blurry iPhone pics from a friend.  Thinking of waiting to share until I get the photographer friend and his Canon 5D for some nice high-res shots.

Jesus H, Tzu, when you described the tattoo to me in chat, I was picturing something a bit smaller. That's full on greatness right there.

That's probably how big my tattoo would have been if the tattoo artist got his way.  I was like "nah dude i was thinking something about a quarter that size."  and then said because then i could add on to it later to not sound like such a pussy.

Much obliged.  My boys, who it is ultimately for, took one look at it and promptly went back to watching cartoons.  Damn.  :)  But since then they have been taking closer looks and insisting I go color with it.

Yeah, I went in asking him to do it down the back of the calf wrapping towards the front and he suggested the shin wrapping back.  I thank God he did because the back half of each scale, the bull and the archer as well as the curled nerves at the end were a bitch.  The shin bone itself was the easiest part.

The whole thing was four hours.  The first thirty minutes I was able to tolerate with teeth gritting and yoga breathing.  The next three hours were cake.  The last thirty minutes were the worst.  I stopped him at one point and put on my headphones because the book I was reading wasn't taking my mind off the pain.  I wasn't two minutes into the first song and he said, "OK, we're done."

Even though I have a few more designs in my head I wouldn't say I caught the supposedly addicting vibe of tattooing.  I could take it or leave it beyond this one.

Addicted.  Color next month.
