Puzzle Quest 2

The true sequel to Puzzle Quest 2 is out. I snagged a copy today as I needed a new game for the DS and was ready for some minor RPG in my puzzling.

I gotta say they have upgraded the RPG slightly with some mid 80's commodore 64 graphics and SOUND! Every time you click on a character for a quest they say something hilarious in the form of a prerecorded message. I for one love this.

I'm playing as a female assassin as probably most dorks will and just started my questing. Hopefully I'll log some more time tonight for a better review.

The AI is weak at first. Or maybe I just remember how to play from part 1.

I read in a review that the game will auto save constantly, and they are right. It can get annoying.

Hopefully this will at least keep me occupied on my plane flight to Minnesota next week.

Finally. I wasn't huge on some of the Galactrix changes they made, glad to see a real sequel made it through the pipe.

Thanks neaux!

terribly addictive. You keep saying one more battle..and then the monster leaves a treasure chest that must be opened by doing another puzzle.. a locked door means another puzzle... these mini games make this an excellent puzzling game.

Quick question, I recall for the first game the combat screen was not random. Did they randomised the combat this game or no?

It has almost too many puzzles. The maps feel very claustrophbic.

The lock picking and door bashing are clever.

Played for fours hours last night.

What do you mean Random?

Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about the more intimate isometric view in the world. I am digging the weapons, though. And what the hell, it's Puzzle Quest!

Eurogamer's review nailed it. It's a shitty RPG wrapped around a mundane puzzle game. But it's all done so smoothly that you can play for hours without caring, chasing the next little reward the game doles out.

I trying to find a way to describe with without being confusing

There are basicly pre loaded tile sets so when you do combat the jewel set show goes like

Jewel set #1
Jewel set #2
Jewel set #3
etc.

When you save and quit and then reload the game from where you saved its always at tile set #1.

Go to 4:42 this is always the first jewel set in the game when you load it. Whether starting a new game or loading a saved game.

Does Puzzle quest 2 have a similar mechanic where I'll be seeing the first board over and over again.

yeah.. now I"m getting my ass kicked a lot. Either the difficulty curved on me quickly or I'm getting really crappy at the game.

My god, this game hasn't lost an ounce of its addictive nature.

Not a huge fan of the isometric game world, but I do appreciate the more responsive touch control. The first Puzzle Quest and Galactrix were fraught with accidental stylus hits, esp within the menu system. The mistaken taps occur a lot less often here.

Mini-games are great and not at all tedious or annoying like in Galactrix. I really need to stop playing and actually do something today.

So repetitive.

So much fun.

This was a bug with the randomization; the gems started in the same configuration on your first game after booting up, but it was always totally random after that (until you quit the game again).

Even on that first board, the gems falling from the top were always random anyway, so I don't know why this would be a big annoyance for you.

I've spent quite a few hours today playing this. I'm realizing the beauty of using a really sharp weapon and stealthing is vital to avoid damage with the assassin.

I wonder how long this game goes on. One of the nice things about the first PQ was that you could see the whole board even if you couldn't walk there yet. I feel like I'm halfway through the game with a level 21 barbarian and no mount but I have no idea. (Just picked up my first party member.) I hope not though, because so far all I'm doing is fighting a bunch of orcs and skeletons. Weirdest thing I've fought so far is the Gelatinous Cube.

You'll hit 50 before the end.

For me, I've tired of it before that and wish it would just end. It's been a pleasant diversion, but the RPG aspect is ridiculously simplistic, and the battles are nearly all so similar that the art for the wide array of creatures seems wasted. There's only a handful of enemies whose abilities affect you in any meaningful way, so most battles are just a matter of playing near-solitaire and whittling away their way-too-high hitpoint totals. Other than gimmick fights (like one where if the enemy gets 16 red, you automatically die), I don't think I've lost a single battle, and probably only get dropped below 75% health in 1 out 10 fights.

I should probably play on Hard, but the game gives no incentive to do so, and I really don't want the fights to last even longer than they already do.

It's been worth the $15 I think, but I didn't expect to feel so negatively about this game when I started playing. I've kept playing it here and there since it feels like I'm near the end, but it's just a chore now. I dread each new room, fearing it'll have 6 unavoidable fights or something nightmarish like that. Each time a room is empty, or has only one of the much more fun mini-games, I give a little fist-pump.

I'll say this much-- the plot in the first game was at least funnier. The main quest feels very small scale too.
