Personal Top Three New Shows Of The Year? - Page 2

Again, I don't hate it. It's funny. As are Better Off Ted and Modern Family. And Archer which, in my opinion at least, is a lot funnier.

Keep watching. By the time you get the paintball episode, you'll be a full on convert.

I haven't heard of, let alone seen, many of these shows. I wanted to wait til Justified finished before watching it all, but probably will soon. I wanted to say that it's nice to see Spartacus getting some love. That show is an unstoppable force.

I would never be so arrogant as to flat-out tell someone their opinion is wrong. So I will say that, on this point, I furiously disagree with you. Getting away from brand new shows for a second, in the past few years, the majority of my most beloved shows have come from the UK -

Life On Mars
Ashes To Ashes
Hustle
Luther
Doctor Who
Murphy's Law
Jekyll
Spooks

to name a few. Again, it's just a difference of opinion, but wow - you're a harsh critic, mate.

I'm pretty sure its these homages that lead to COMMUNITY to being so damn overrated 'round these parts. But I need a little more from my comedies than clever winks at pop culture. Give me PARKS AND REC any day of the week. Or even COUGAR TOWN.

3.) Modern Family
2.) Justified
1.) Community.

If you don't like Community or are one of those people who thinks it is only popular because of pop culture references, please drink a gallon of gasoline.

Epic Fail...especially with Cougar Town.

Admit it. You've never watched it.

COUGAR TOWN had an incredibly strong second half. A few episodes near the end were as strong as the best of SCRUBS. (Not surprising, as Bill Lawrence is behind both.)

Cougar Town fan here also.

Cougar Town? The wife watched it. Even she admitted it sucked ass. What's your excuse for watching this?

Strong words.

Why on earth would someone need an excuse for what they like? That's silly.

For watching it or for liking it? For watching: the aforementioned Bill Lawrence.

Its funny? Is that a good enough excuse for you? It's warm, it's weird, and it has a lot of personality.

I'm gonna have to go with:
1) Community
2) Human Target
3) Warehouse 13 (it's a silly show, but I like it)

Wifey was watching some of that Cougar Town the other day. I caught about five minutes of it. Mainly trying to figure out that the chick was Harmony from Buffy. But it didn't seem that bad - not the kind of thing I'd watch regularly, but there were some pretty funny moments in what I saw (this poor kid being taught to kiss on an apple cos the young'un ain't got no skills).

I watched it 2 or 3 times. It's not as good as Spartacus. Not enough tits.

What a misleading title.

You talking about Busy Phillips? She is of Freaks and Geeks fame. Mercedes McNab was Harmony.

That's true. But like zak said, it started out kinda being about cougars, but I think TPTB noticed that wasn't working and now it really is a warm, funny ensemble show.

I don't think I've seen a show shift its focus so much over the course of its first season. Obviously for the better in COUGAR TOWN's case. ABC was reportedly even mulling changing the name of the show, but I haven't heard anything more about it, so I guess they decided against it.

Not within the first season, no, I have not either. But Parks and Rec did an amazing turn around in the right direction in it's second season.

COMING SOON:

I am in a state of extreme excitement for the debut of Lawrence O'Donnell's MSNBC 10PM hour show, starting this July. I'd have posted a thread for it already, but we don't yet know the title of the program... all the same though, it almost does not even matter. ODonnell's one of my favorite politicos and an extremely classy fellow. I even had the privilege of dining near him during the summer of 2004.

He takes no BS, and he's the only talking head I know of who has actually slapped the President of the United States. A man of unique qualifications, when it comes to speaking truth to power!

So, wait, you dig "Cougar Town", but hate "Community". Shit, dude, you really are dead inside.

I'm... I'm so sorry for your loss.
Its crazy how combative Community fans get if someone doesn't automatically love it. Its definitely a lot of fun at times, but I think calling the show 'the next Arrested Development' is pretty ridiculous.

That said, there are only 2 new shows this year that I would revisit for a second season and one of them is Community. The other is Treme.

Still need to get around to Justified.
Like all Bill Lawrence produced shows, Cougar Town thinks that it is remarkably clever, and tries way too hard. It improved as the year went on, but I hesitate to call it good.

My favorites this year:

1) Treme - Not perfect by any stretch, but leaps and bounds ahead of the other stuff I saw.
2) Justified - I thought it got better as the serialization of the storylines grew, which kept it from turning into The Closer For Dudes.
3) Modern Family

I haven't watched Community or Glee yet.
I haven't watched much TV this season. But...
1. Archer. M, as in "mancy".
2. Community. "excuse me, I have to go feed Annie's Boobs."
3. Doctor Who. "Bowties are cool."

I regret to say I have not been able to watch Justified or most of Modern Family. Fuck Glee, though. It's a series where the leads are all despicable characters and the villain is so overwhelmingly charismatic that you're on her side. I mean, that CAN work, but Ryan Murphy doesn't have the ability to pull it off.

Just wanted to say thanks for all those who suggested Community and Justified. Barreled through Community last week, and although I wouldn't call it the best of the year by any stretch, there's more than enough there to warrant a continued investment in it. The paintball episode . . . holy shit, that was great.

Halfway through Justified at the moment and loving every minute of it. Also love the Tombstone poster in the boss' office.

Sherlock barrelled into my top three for the year, it and Luther have shown that British Drama can be interesting and can use our shorter formats in interesting ways.

Yeah, having finished Justified and Sherlock, picking a top three for the year just became impossible.

In fact, I dare say this is going to be the first year ever where it's going to be a hell of alot easier to pick my Top Ten TV SHOWS (and even to be as specific to say BRAND NEW shows that only started this year) than it will be to pick a basic Top Ten MOVIES for the year. That really is mind-blowing to me.
