New System Advice--XBox360 or PS3?

My ten year old, Kid Vivisector, has been playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare on his year old Wii. He just got to play COD: MW2 on a XBox and now is slavering for a new system.

To encourage him to do his school bridge activities this summer, I'm considering offering one of the two systems as incentive.

The question is, which one is better for that kind of shooting game? I know he'd love to play the Grand Theft series, but I think that's too adult for him still.

He likes the war games and driving games. We don't have a BluRay, so that's a point to consider....

Let the discussion begin!

He likes FPSes? 360. Thread over.

Yeah.. 360. Although one thing to keep in mind is that a lot of these FPSes, like the Call of Duty games, etc. are largely made for online multiplayer, and you probably do not want a ten-year-old hearing the scintillating conversation that takes place during online matches.

Oh, he's played plenty online with others, but not with the chat.

But I'm sure he's heard worse from Lady Vivisector.

Have they got the breakdown factor with X360's under control now?

Also, to sort of piggyback on this thread, what's the word with breakdowns on the new black 360s?

The Red Ring Of Death problem was allegedly finally taken care of in the most recent revision of the regular 360 a year or so ago. However, they've just released the Slim 360, which is going to be the default unit going forward. There are plenty of reasons to pick it up--250GB hard drive, built-in WiFi, Kinect-ready--but while it is smaller and consumes less power and should theoretically be even more reliable than the old units, it is brand new so the jury is out.

I would buy it now if I were getting a 360. I'm just saying there's a little bit of uncertainty with it just coming out.

That's better I suppose.

That, and they still offer a 3 year RROD warranty don't they?

No. Only 1 year warranty on the new 360s. And no RROD is possible, they took out the red LEDs. If the system senses an overheat situation it shuts itself down, theoretically eliminating the RROD situation. But there have been some user reports of the video card flaking at high heat and messing with the unit. Moral of the story, get an extended warranty and keep the unit in a space with a ton of ventilation.

As much as I love my PS3...I'll go with the Xbox as well. It's a pure gaming system true and true..and the interface a lot more enjoyable.

360
Seems like i'm the minority here but i'd say PS3. You get free online play and a Blu-Ray player.
I'd say PS3 also if the controller weren't so shitty for FPS.
Got both but if I had to choose, I'd go with the 360 every time, especially given what kind of stuff the OP says the kid likes. The PS3 has proven sadly underwhelming to me so far.

Generally speaking, what is the advantage of XBox over PS3?

More RAM and the streamlined architecture definitely makes a difference, ps3 can't anti-alias for shit. Of course, having all that power jammed in there probably contributes to it overheating and dying.

I wouldn't mind a little graphic details, what about playability, games market or stuff like that? Thanks.
Once I buy one of this I couldn't afford having to change/fix it.

The Live support on the Xbox 360 is great too. Cross game chat, party systems all make 360 online gaming a joy and it's one of the reasons I barely use my PS3.

I'd say for FPSs and action games you'll be fine with a 360, although any chewers taking recommendations should note that it's the PS3 which usually gets the interesting exclusives (outside of Mass Effect).
360 is probably your best bet. Yeah, a PS3 with blu-ray is nice (that's what I have) but if the machine is gonna be monopolized all the time, makes no sense to hope to use it for HD movies.
Hardware-wise, they're very similar in ability. The 360 wins in software. Most games that come out for both end up slightly better on 360 due to the ease of development. The 360 also has a significantly better menu system for navigation and management and online play, which has helped make it the default choice for online play for most games.

It's also cheaper.

For cross-platform titles, the Xbox 360 also wins the war, 99 times out of 100 -- with rare exceptions like Final Fantasy XIII (and excluding PC versions), usually the better version of a major multi-plat title is found on Microsoft's console, rather than on the PS3.

(Red Dead, Ghostbusters, GTA IV, Dragon Age: Origins, Fallout 3...the list goes on. I'd even put the Xbox version of Ninja Gaiden II over the PS3's Sigma II by a country mile, despite the differences being more censored content-related, than technical performance-based.)
Sigma II was prettier, but the reduced blood flow and the overfuckedwith physics kill that game.

As a 360 owner, I'd say go for PS3. Right now PS3 is getting more & better games than 360, with the upcoming Gran Turismo 5, inFamous 2, LBP 2, as well as great titles they already have with God of War 3 and Uncharted 2, among others. 360 has Halo and Gears of War, but not that many IP games, and who knows if titles like Mass Effect and GOW will stay exclusive forever. PS3 also has bigger HD and built-in wireless adapter (although these will be addressed in the new Xbox 360 Slim console), as well as Blu-ray player. Oh, and PSN is free, unlike Live. Even when you compare PS Move to Kinect, it's clear that PS Move will cater to core gamers moreso than Kinect could, due to the fact that with Move you'd have a controller to use. I love my 360, but if I have to choose the systems again I'd pick PS3.
For anything other than FPS, it's PS3 by a mile. As I'm not the biggest FPS player (other than the days I played Team Fortress 2, which were delightful), I barely touch by 360.

Those are already out. More importantly for a lot of people, you can grab a 360 for $150 if you're not sure you want/need all the bells/whistles.

PSN is also subject to many more complaints about connectivity issues than I hear about Live. The $3-ish a month does appear to buy something.

Kinect can be used with gamepads. Both motion control systems are open questions as to how they'll be used a year or two from now.

You see Gran Turismo 5, inFamous 2, LBP 2, God of War 3 and Uncharted 2 and I see 4 rentals (and a huge yawn to Gran Turismo). But for anyone who wants to play those games more than any others, the choice should be clear. For anyone, I'd advise them to personally look at the Coming Soon lists and if one console stands out, buy it.

Both consoles are solid offerings. There's no wrong choice.
I'm grabbing a PS3 once I graduate and figure out what country I'm living in. Then again, I have my own reasons to stick with Sony. Backwards compatibility (there are PS1 games I still play), and I play one-handed due to my disability. The PS controllers have way less surface area than the Xbox controller, lot handier when you have to hold the controller at an odd angle.
I'm fairly certain that the newer PS3 models aren't backwards-compatible.

Well, shit. Looks like the PS2 won't get tossed.

Live isn't Universal although it will arrive to Chile soon.

PS3. It's a true multimedia machine. You can watch dvds, blu-rays, and play games. It's my default dvd player, even though I have a standalone Toshiba HD-DVD player that my girlfriend got me back in 2007.

It's also really reliable. I got mine at a pawnshop 2 years ago because it was a 60GB backwards compatible one, and it still works as perfectly as when I first got it. Whoever pawned it was damn foolish.

Online play is also free. Got Netflix? Just have them send you the PS3 disc until the firmware update later this year.
Obviously if you want to watch Blu-Rays the choice is obvious. Netflix Instant Watch is baked into Xbox Live though, you just register your account.
For those with any sense of wonderment and in argument for the ps3: there is the impending HD re-releases of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. I also think the Sly Cooper HD pack is coming out soon - 1 & 2 in that series were just incredibly solid fun. Never played 3.

Mark of Kri HD would pretty much round out that generation of awesomeness. Not gonna happen though. No one played the Mark of Kri.

Some people aren't paying attention to who this console is for and are just using the thread to spout which is best for them.

A 10-year old American boy who wants to play Modern Warfare 2?

He'll want a 360 unless something unusual's happened in the US and they've started buying PS3s. The format's initially a cheaper outlay (although more expensive in the long-run with live subscriptions) and the controller's generally regarded as better for the FPS genre, he'll be able to play against his 360-owning friends and you'll be able to stream some HD content - even if it's not a BD.

The new SKU looks pretty great value for money too.

Personally though - I do love the exclusive PSN & PS3 games, BDs and the fact it's such a solid piece of hardware. I'm not much of a hardcore gamer anymore though.
