Internet 'kill switch' bill - seriously America

Does the US government actually get that the internet is used by people outside America? Quite a few of us I think you'll find.

Obama internet 'kill switch' bill approved

The US senators pushing a controversial new bill that some fear would give President Barack Obama the powers to seize control of and even shut down the internet have rejected claims it would give Obama a net "kill switch".

The bill, titled Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, has been unanimously approved by the US Homeland Security committee and will be put to a vote on the Senate floor shortly.

Lobby groups and academics quickly rounded on the bill, which seeks to grant the President broad emergency powers over the internet in times of national emergency.

Any internet firms and providers must "immediately comply with any emergency measure or action developed" by a new section of the US Department of Homeland Security, dubbed the "National Centre for Cybersecurity and Communications".

The critics said that, rather than combat terrorists, it would actually do them "the biggest favour ever" by terrorising the rest of the world, which is now heavily reliant on cyberspace.

Australian academics criticised the description in the bill's title of the internet as a US "national asset", saying any action would disrupt other countries as most of the critical internet infrastructure is located in the US.
So what, us dirty foreigners are just a bunch of cavemen sitting in ditches sticking berries up our noses that only get use of the world wide web at the discretion of the US?

Fuck. Off.

Well, possibly one good thing that might come out of this is that it will accelerate the development of infrastructure independent of the current set up thus rendering any such off switch redundant. The irony of the possibility of the internet kept running by servers in China because someone threw the US off switch is not lost on me.

It would seem that the "Internet" as a whole will be ok, you just won't be able to access any US servers.

As an American statesman, Albert Gore, Jr. invented the internet it is our God-given right to administrate access to it.

Seriously, though, let China or the Russian Business Network take over the infrastructure and see how you foreigners like it.

Seriously seriously, though, fuck the government and their middling with the flow of information. In this day and age it's an issue tantamount to the separation of church and state. It's bad enough they monitor whoever is pirating intellectual property, sharing kiddie porn, or looking up schematics for weapons of mass destruction - heaven forbid they cut off Facebook, YouTube, or Grandma's AOLmail.

I've stopped being surprised whenever Joe Lieberman does or says something stupid. It's like being surprised every time you successfully take a breath.

Hell, I feel like killing the internet every time I read the user comments section on news sites... but this reads like they watched Live Free or Die Hard one too many times.
