OSS 117: Cairo, Nest of Spies (2006)

Rented this based on a recommendation from a friend. Not the most hilarious spy spoof ever, but this fits somewhere between The Pink Panther and Austin Powers. Its saving grace is that, minus a few obvious greenscreen shots, it looks exactly like a film shot in the 60s should look like. The humor is definitely modern as are the women (although to a lesser extent), but part of the film's charm is that it convincingly feels like something that was made 45-50 years ago.

Agreed on all counts, Pop. This was cute. Not a gut-buster, but an impressively-convincing homage.

I knew it was worthwhile once the chicken fight began.

Yeah, very fun movie. The pacing takes a little getting used to (even for those of us who remember those 60's spy films!), and Dujardin's comedy seems more locked into the parody aspects of the role than, say, Sellers or Myers, who can go off on an effectively tangential riff now and again before pulling back into the overall storyline. But there's lots to like: I loved the bad girl tied to the bed asking him to gag her and make love to her. I mean, you always KNEW that women wanted that from Bond, right?

By the way, anyone seen the new one, OSS 117 - Lost in Rio? My Netflix queue still has its release date as "Unknown."

My favorite part is after 117 silences the Imam and he's at the rally. His ver presence causes them to take up arms. So Clouseau. Granted, there are other criminal elements at play here, but at this point in the film 117 is totally exacerbating the problem.

Isn't there a second movie in this series?

My brother and I enjoyed this one quite a bit despite the stupidity of it all. Some decent humor in a couple of scenes.
