Burning DVDs with a Mac (problems)

Thread Starter
Does anyone here have a grasp of the ins and outs of burning DVDs, both dual-layered and "normal" with Macs?! About half the time I attempt this, it starts to burn only to give me some goddamned fucking error message that I can't make any sense out of (tried copying the error number and searching for that to no avail).

Currently trying my best to burn a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folder to a Verbatim 8x DVD+R DL disc, and get the error message no matter how low/high I set my burn speed.

And that's to say NOTHING of the issue of my PS3 not playing most of these on the rare occasion that I DO get something to burn correctly.

I'm so fucking sick of wasting money on "trial and error" here I could fucking smash something.

Help? Please, for the love of all things holy, tell me someone has some good advice here because I can't find anything worth anything elsewhere.

I feel your pain. iDVD is a complete pain in the ass to navigate. Unfortunately, I don't have much of an answer to you. I'm guessing you're having some issues with the format of the video files, so what I would likely recommend is that you download an application called "Handbrake." It's free, and allows you to easily convert your files so that they may be more....playable.

However, with that said, I still find burning things (outside of iTunes) problematic.

About a year ago I was able to locate a download for Alain Resnais' "Je t'aime je t'aime" (which you can't buy anywhere), and was really jazzed to burn into a disc. So after setting everything up, I burnt a disc. I popped it into my player, and the menu and chapters completely work (you can see film scenes playing in the chapter preview boxes), but when I played the actual movie the screen was completely dark.
After messing around with Handbrake and trying to figure out the issues online for ages I just gave up.

If anyone else here as any better ideas or suggestions, any tips would be appreciated.

I use MacTheRipper to rip, DVD2oneX to compress, and Dragon Burn to burn.

Sometimes you run into a DVD with intentional "bad sectors" to foil copying. Sony and Disney DVDs are notoriously hard to copy. This sucks for parents who want to burn back-up copies of Toy Story in case little Jimmy wrecks the original.

Are you having problems with every DVD you try regardless of studio, or do you notice a common denominator with many of them — like, they're all Sony, or something?

Wait...what are we burning? Copies of movies or things you've edited yourself? If it's the latter - is DVD Studio Pro in the equation? That's what I use on my Mac. FinalCut>Compressor>DVDStudio. It works every time and I can give you the play by play on how if that's what you're looking for.

First, take all your DVD+Rs and throw them away. This is why you are having random problems playing your burned DVDs. I have no idea why +Rs are still manufactured.

I should be able to help you with the rest pretty easily, but first I need to know what is the source and format of what you are trying to burn? I am assuming you are using iDVD, but let me know what program you are using also.

I noticed that the original post is a bit old, but I'm guessing you are still having problems if you are still using +Rs.
