The drinking rate is a result of the stresses from demanding, well-paying jobs that they got due to their intelligence. Or it's from the pressure to try and live up to that college education by landing a demaning, well-paying job. God knows I've felt that. The drinking rate is not due to their intelligence in and of itself.

Graduated 3rd in my high school class, academically gifted, graduated summa cum laude from university, and the only alcohol I've had was during First Communion.

Or it's because getting a degree doesn't necessarily equal heaps of intelligence, and they're having trouble living up to said degree.

Then, surely you're aware that anecdotal evidence is kind of worthless and that your case could be unrepresentative of the group, i.e. an outlier.

I like the fact that I can now tell myself that I spent my early twenties taking home the smartest women in the bar. Most of them were fall down brilliant, come to think of it.

Sure. But saying that smart women drink more without getting into why is worthless, too. "You're smart, you're gonna drink". Huh? There are other factors compelling these women to drink besides their GPAs.

SAT Verbal Score: 780 (would have been a perfect 800 but I out thought myself on a analogy I should have by all rights gotten.. it was about nape of the neck VS back of the wrist, or some such thing)

Alcoholic drinks I've consumed in the past year? Three, I think.

It's my opinion that smart people drink more because when you sit back and think about the state of the world, which I believe smart people are more inclined to do, who wouldn't want a drink?

Yeah, this would be sort of obvious. There's like less depression and stress in people who are dumb as rocks. Since people use alcohol as a way to cope with stress and depression its only logical that women of higher intelligence drink more. With guys that would probably be hard to prove because most morons get smashed because they think its awesome. You women still have your floozies though.

Yes, women drink to release stress, and being in high paying, male-dominated careers is stressful.

Doesn't change the fact that according to this study, since I drink a lot, it means I'm a genius!

The further down you read in the article cited in the one Diva linked (which still isn't the study, itself - just another news article, and mainstream news sources are notorious for misrepresenting research), the clearer it becomes that the primary link being made is between level of education, not level of intelligence. If you go to college, chances are higher that you'll have disposable income, that you'll put off having kids longer (more time for social drinking), etc., so there will probably be other factors than intelligence leading you to drink.

Seems kind of sketchy that they're trying to link drinking with childhood test scores and drinking with level of education attained in the same study. It assumes a bunch of connections that might not necessarily exist (i.e., the highest scoring test takers in elementary or high school don't necessarily attain the highest level of education).
