Liz Phair - Funstyle

OUT NOW.

She mine as well of titled it FUCK YOU, because this is essentially a huge middle finger to the fickle music industry.

I don't know if I'm more shocked that I've just listened to new Liz Phair (thought she disappeared from the music industry forever) or that the majority of the music itself is so out there.

I get a Girlysound vibe in that she just doesn't give a fuck. It's almost as if she's playing these tunes for herself in her bedroom, giving way to each and every of her indulgences.

Whatever I think about the album, I can at least say her gift as a lyricist is back in prominence (love the line "I think I'm a genius, you're being a penius. Colada, that is" from 'U Hate It').

Faves right now: 'Smoke', 'Bang! Bang!', 'Beat Is Up', 'And He Slayed Her', 'Satisfied', 'U Hate It'.

Tracklisting:

1. Smoke
2. Bollywood
3. You Should Know Me
4. Miss September
5. My My
6. Oh, Bangladesh
7. Bang! Bang!
8. Beat Is Up
9. And He Slayed Her
10. Satisfied
11. U Hate It

Is "Bollywood" at all representative of the rest of the album? I just listened to that at the site, and I'm pretty sure it's the worst thing she's ever done. It's certainly an unexpected turn from the polished pop she's been putting out for the last decade or so, but this is not an improvement.

Thankfully, no. It's more representative of the quirkiness, but there's so much better material on the album. Definitely an anomaly. I'm not sure I'd even classify it as a song...Liz's idea of a joke?
Any thoughts on why she would pick that song to promote the album? It's just dreadful. Either Ray is right, and it's a joke, or Devin's right, and it's the sound of someone not getting Paper Planes.

After listening more, I don't know what to think. She's gone off the deep end, but I think I like it for the most part.

Other than the traditional Liz tunes ('You Should Know Me', 'Miss September', *'And He Slayed Her', 'Satisfied'), the rest is a perpetual mindfuck.

She's not on a label right now. Might be her way of saying she can record and release whatever she wants. I mean, she just put out her album during the July 4th weekend without any warning. That would've been seen as soooo indie back in 1993. Or just plain crazy.

Here's 'Bang! Bang!'.

* 'And He Slayed Her' = the 'Ding Dong' song she played back in '08 during the Guyville 15th anniversary tour

Wow, she's so done.

At this point, I don't think her career could be more "done," especially after Somebody's Miracle. Hence her willingness to really go out into the wilderness this time around.

I dunno if Liz could've ever come back after a decade of backlash. Me, I loved her self-titled, but I was obviously in the minority.

At least most of these tunes are fascinating and odd. I give her credit for that.

Liz is a classic example of an artist who paints her masterpiece right out of the gate and then can't catch lightning in a bottle twice. Plus, for the demographic who most readily embraced Guyville when it first dropped, the album evokes a time and place, usually college, that none of the subsequent albums obviously could.

Me, I gave up on her after whitechocolatespaceegg, so I've got some catching up to do.

I stuck with her through the self-titled. It's not a great album, but the insane production mixed with the occasional moments of honesty made it fascinating if uneven. I don't think I ever listened to SM more than just samples, and maybe a music video. It just seemed so pointless. The self-titled's freakishness made it fascinating.

Liz Phair, the musical creation - at her best - felt honest. When talking about fucking (and she liked to fuck), or bad relationships she was cutting. Exile had the structure that maybe she always needed. The follow up was awkward, but they always are especially after piles of hype even though it has some graceful moments, it's the first half that feels like a clutter, but I thought Whitechocolate was her maturing, and I feel has some of her strongest work (huge fan of What Makes You Happy). I think the problem is she was mining the same material, and when she was talking about her relationship problems ten years after on the self-titled, I found that intriguing, but she came off as stunted or just exploitative of the old, especially when she's singing a song about hot white cum.

whitechocolatespaceegg is her quiet masterpiece. Lyrically, she's never been better. Not one stinker on there. When that particular album was originally released, the backlash was already set in motion, with the slick production and more poppy aspirations. But it was smart, full of perception and great songwriting.

Somebody's Miracle was the first time Liz Phair became a bore. Bland and uninteresting. The self-titled was at least full of life and energy. If it wasn't for 'Table For One' (one of my top 10 Liz tunes...this is a real gem), 'Got My Own Thing', 'Leap Of Innocence', and 'Lazy Dreamer', it would be damn close to a train wreck.

I love Liz when she's being weird, quirky, and off-kilter. I guess as long as she's keeping me interested, I'll follow her path, no matter how relevant she is.

Thank you so much for posting this. I had heard something was in the works but it would've taken me forever to come across this. I'll reserve judgment until after I've given it a proper listen.

The Indian dude and the Valley Girl (Liz?) doing the voice-overs on 'Beat Is Up' are hilarious. This is the kind of shit I missed from Liz. Her wit, humor, and clever self-awareness.

'And He Slayed Her' = Andy Slater, who used to be the CEO of Capitol Records. Something tells me he was a real, real douche.

Other fave moments:

The loopy synths on 'Smoke'

The guitar plucking/riffage all over 'You Should Know Me' and 'Oh, Bangladesh'

The intro and chorus of 'My My', which is an obvious homage to Kelly Clarkson's 'Miss Independent' (read: that's incredibly awesome).

The ridiculously soaring power-pop on display with 'Satisfied', which is a harsh contrast to the actual lyrics. That's vintage Liz right there---making beautiful pop out of the most depressing and serious situations.

Liz mocking her critics on 'U Hate It'...she hit this one out of the park. Both a fitting end to the album and a new beginning, wiping the slate clean after years of being attacked for her artistic expression and questioned about her motives.

I like this album a lot. I truly do. The fact that's it's confounding and not easily labeled makes it that much better.

I mean let's face it, that quirky indie shit is gold right now. When Vampire Weekend has a #1 album the "indie" part of indie rock is pretty much dead. The sad part is if Liz Phair hadn't done her last two albums (self titled and Somebody's Miracle) she would be poised for a huge fucking comeback right now as the indie rock MILF of legend.

Unfortunately her career is kind of reminiscent of an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. You know she means well, and she keeps trying to do good, but everything keeps coming out all fucked up. When "girl rock" consisted of Britney and Christina Aguilera she put out the self titled and tried to be herself (sing about fucking) while being poppy. Hardcore fans hated it, but she some new fans and made some scratch on the single, so she tried to back peddle with Somebody's Miracle, and both new fans and old hated that one.

So at this point it's like she's painted herself into a corner. She can't go the pop route without being called a sellout and the label she's signed to won't let her do anymore folky acoustic shit that doesn't produce singles. Putting out an album like this under these circumstances is really her only viable option at this point. She releases this weird shit on the DL, goes and plays a Matador show with GBV later this year and then maybe she can go back to doing the indie rock thing, if the kids will have her.

I've seen her 4 or 5 times, got all her albums and most of her vinyl rarities. I don't expect to like every single song she does, but so far she's yet to really disappoint me. Yeah Bollywood feels like she's trying too hard, but it's obvious that she's at least trying to say something.

Couldn't have said it better myself, Jack Frost.

All of this ugly baggage isn't doing her any favors. And surprise! The new album is taking a beating critically.

Liz responds on her official site:

How To Like It.

You were never supposed to hear these songs. These songs lost me my management, my record deal and a lot of nights of sleep.
Yes, I rapped one of them. Im as surprised as you are. But here is the thing you need to know about these songs and the ones coming next: These are all me. Love them, or hate them, but dont mistake them for anything other than an entirely personal, un-tethered-from-the-machine, free for all view of the world, refracted through my own crazy lens.

This is my journey. Ill keep sending you postcards.

-Liz

Glad she's following her muse. She's still the rebel. I'm excited to see what's coming next.

I...I actually like "Bollywood."

Thumbs high on the return-to-roots production values of this album at the very least. It totally feels like the modern day equivalent of the girl in the bedroom with a 4-track.
