Life with GERD.

Curious is anyone else out in the sewer has GERD? Gastroesophageal reflux disease.

about 5 years ago, I was diagnosed with having a heatil hernia, then later with GERD. I mostly avoided medication, cause I was a dumb kid, but over the past 6 months, my stomach, throat, everything has been awful. After I get done eating dinner, I seem to get this strange attack below my rib cage, that caused tightness, shortness in breath, and heart palpatations. I went and saw my doctor, and he perscribed me Kapidex to help regulate the acid in my stomach. Seems to work pretty well, but I do sometims get episodes.

Well, yesterday was something else. I really don't know what happened, but maybe I do? I didn't take my meds in the morning, and went to a parade tht included me smoking, drinking plenty of bloody marys, and eating fried foods. I felt pretty good untill I got home about 5pm. I decided to take my kapidex then. Well, 20 minutes after taking it, I got a sevre case of my chest being tight, and i couldn't breathe well at all. It felt like it was going away, so the family and I, decided to go catch the fireworks, and to get some dinner before hand. On our way, I all a suddenly had a episode of I don't know what. My chest felt tight, and like it was caving in. I couldn't breath. I started panicing which caused me to start feeling numb everywhere. I though I was going to die. I ignored my chest, and just concentracted on breathing. And the symptoms went down. I told the wife to just drive towards the hospital to be safe. When I got there, of course I felt better. But when we left, 5 minutes later, I had another attack. This time we went back, and I went in. They did an EKG, and they said my heart looked great. My breathing was strong, and I showed no signs that I had a heart attack, or anytype of heart issue. They said they wanted to run some more tests, but I signed a waivor and left before the bill turned into thousands. They gave me some xanex to help keep my nerves calmed, thinking it could have been a panic attack brought on by my GERD.

I'm going to my primary tonight to get looked at, typical physical, and to tell him what happened yesterday. I might see if he can give me something for anxiety too.

Curious to see if anyone else has had these type of symptoms or problems. Panic Attacks too?

As you know, I too suffer from eating issues, and my heart goes out to you. What a terrible way to have your 4th conclude. I made myself a Independence Day Hamburger when I got home from fireworks (which were a nightmare and started two hours after they were supposed to. I had to walk along the highway for three miles at one point), and even though I put only a few pieces of onions on, my stomach was in immediate pain as soon as I ate it. What the heck? Onions used to be one of my favorite foods! When I was little I used to put them in my rootbeer (try it sometime, I think the flavors go well together IMHO)

I don't have GERD (that is an unfortunate name), at least not that I know of, but I am waiting to start a prylosec regimen and hopefully that will help with some of my issues

Sounds like you had a good old fashioned panic attack, Nick.

The Hurty GERDy Man

But seriously, this shit ain't easy to deal with. I have one acquaintance cursed with this and another with Barrett's Esophagus, and they monitor their diets really closely and work with a local esophageal specialist who has been a ton of help to them (the one with GERD ended up needing to get Nissen fundoplication). Have you been seen by/are you being treated by a specialist?

Lay off the Bloody Marys man! I've got what seems like a mild form of GERD compared to most people. Red sauces are my number one enemy... soda is a jerk too. Sometimes I get carried away and then have to do a couple weeks of Prilosec or something but I manage it well.

Anyway, you did the bad stuff to yourself and then seemed to have a panic attack. Stop doing the bad stuff!

That is exactly what happens to me and they thought it was Gastric Reflux at first as well. Turns out it's Gall Stones (it's taken them almost two years to figure this one out) so my advice would be request an Ultrasound to rule that out.

I know exaclty how you feel man so you have my sympathies.

went to me normal doctor yesterday. talked about stuff, and he said he's pretty positive it's my gerd, mixed with high anxiety. that I had a sevre attack of both of them the other day, and having that happen can feel just as bad as a real heart attack.

When i was scoped years ago, they also did a barium test, as well as a full chest xray. Gallbladder was fine.

My problem is me always thinking it's my heart. I had heart surgery as a teenager, a cardiac oblation for my SVT. So i sometimes jump the conclusion of thinking my gerd, is actually my heart. I also have the worst diet in the world. I don't eat shit from the time I wake up, to when I get home at 5pm. I live on coffee during the day. I also used to smoke to reduce my hunger, but I quit smoking months back.

the doctor perscribed me two types of anxiety meds, one to take every day, and xanax for when I really need it.

Umm hitial hernias are in high assoc with gerd. Since I'm only a med student, I don't want to scare you with the cancer risks associated with it, but yeah there is a risk of lower esophageal adenocarcinoma.

Coffee especially black will do it. Really anything acidic (even your own stomach juices) will aggravate it. Just chill and relax, drink some basic fluids and avoid the acidic stuff.

disclaimer: Still a student

been tested for barrets, and I'm taking what is needed to prevent getting them. I do, like you said, need to cut back on the coffee.

I looked at how much I ws drinking. 12 - 16 cups of black coffee a day. that can't be good.

Classico Red sauces used to do the same thing to me, all the time. Used to make me feel like I was having a heart attack. So I avoid them like the plague. Also, I take it easy on Tomato's all together now. Just in case.

I bought a bottle of Aloe Vera Juice this morning, heard it was good for GERD and Acid Reflux. Taking it today, no incidents so far, feel really good. 8 bucks for a gallon of it.
