I'll have to check out the car list when I'm home from work. Nissan alone, accounts for over 140 cars I do believe - so pretty safe bet there will be a Skyline to drive?
There are 11 Skylines in the game as far as I can tell from that list.

Come on, over 1000 cars and no Koenigsegg? Of course the biggest omission is the lack of Porsches, due to them being licensed to EA.

Wednesday...but yes definitely. My copy of the Collector's Edition awaits!

Reviews are trickling in. It seems to be underwhelming mostly due to a lack of focus.
From IGN's review: "Ultimately its driving wins out to ensure that it’s still a great game, but it leaves that nagging doubt; this could have been a masterpiece were it not for the fact that Polyphony was so absorbed with the detail that it took its eye off the ball."

Presentation: 7.0 - A cumbersome front-end and minimal, overlong loading screens hinder it, as do a series of other strange design choices

Graphics: 9.0 - It's moments of sheer beauty ultimately outweigh the uglier ones, though sadly they don't quite outnumber them.

Sound: 8.0 - The visuals aren't met by the audio, and the engine notes lack grunt. The less said about the soundtrack the better.

Gameplay: 9.0 - For all its missteps in the single player mode it's still an unrivalled driving experience - and that's where it really counts.

Lasting Appeal: 9.0 - There's certainly not a paucity of content, and if any future patches can help streamline the online it could have serious legs.

I cannot wait to pick my copy up after work today!

Long ass install. It sat at 19 minutes for a good 5 minutes. I'm about to fall asleep here waiting for this damn game to complete so I can actually play it.
Menu's are too sluggish for my tastes. After doing something and going into the front end, too much delay between seeing the screen and getting to choose whatever you want to do. It annoys me the same way Google Instant does. Also, it felt like the game crashed after switching settings from mph to kph, unless it was changing assets in the background but didn't say so.

Graphically, it's not the digital equivalent of Christina Hendricks and Kelly Brook jumping on a trampoline in slow motion. Only crying I see my ps3 doing are the harsh noises it makes when loading assets during the install or pre-race. It looks good, but I haven't seen anything that impressed me yet (like those pre-release trailers did).

Love the car handling. Nice weight to the vehicles, but that should be a given. If I can find time I hope to see what career mode has to offer.
I found my steed--2010 Subaru Impreza WRX STi. I came close to buying one this year. Love this car.

EDIT: And yes, fuck the menus. GT5 could benefit from being more 'game-like'.

EDIT EDIT: The game is sterile. There's hardly any life in it at all. I'm happy to see the license tests have been de-emphasized. There's no real great fun in the career mode minus the RPG-like elements. No one should ever have to race a 1983 Honda wagon. Kind of mad I passed on F1 2010 for this. Very underwhelming.
Trying to get gold on some of the license tests is borderline control rage inducing. Haven't found a good cam to race in, so far bumper cam is my default choice. That one menu song brings me flashbacks of that youtube drunk guy who falls on his ass after pulling a beer out of the cooler (the silent movie-esque song).

I really need a wheel to enjoy this game, the dual shock kind of sucks - playing forza with the 360's controller feels slightly better than this. So, are there good wheel/pedal peripherals out for the ps3?

Love the kart racing, zippy little things. I currently suck ass at Nascar, car keeps veering to the left up to the wall when trying the second zombie Jeff Gordon challenge.

Tip for ps3/psp gran turismo owners for importing cars:

In the ps3 menu, go to options, scroll down to the Import PSP option. It'll start looking for a connection/data.
Power on and connect your psp to the ps3.
Boot up PSP Gran Turismo.
Go to Options in PSP Gran Turismo, then select the button to export cars.
The two consoles will sync and transfer data.
You can then list your top 50 favorite cars for use in Arcade Mode of GT5.

Would have been nice if the menu option listed those steps instead of just letting the end user stare at the psp in usb mode wondering wtf...

Game could have used more time in the oven.

I'm going to go ahead and say this game lacks direction. I know full well there are going to be people who love GT5. With that being said, there's a lot of things that add up to some pretty big problems for me. Chief among them being the distinct lack of it being a game. I don't like racing shitty, underpowered cars. I'm not talking about a modern day sedan, but the aforementioned 83 Honda or a mid-90's Miata. Who really wants that?

Cut out the standard cars and focus on the premium ones. Streamline the menu system. Make the game lively. It's like playing a high-budget art project. It's just so damn clunky. Sad to say, but I can see my copy being sold here in the next few days.

What car did you start out with, is it a lack of funds to get your prefered cars?

My initial disatisfacion with the game came from making an effort to nab the penniless trophy, in which I chose the level 0 daihatsu and spent the rest on the GT kart. The first few races were not fun or welcoming with such a lame car. Only after venturing elsewhere to the kart races I had enough to buy the Honda Civic 97. At least after that I was able to compete in the races and place on the podium.

Also, a Big Fucking Note to everyone; when you complete a series or license challenges you'll find yourself back at the main career screen with a notification that you earned a car. When you click on the Car Delivery truck icon it will ask you if you want to use the item. Click Yes on this notification, it is not asking you if you want to make the awarded car your current car, if you click no you're refusing the reward and it goes poof. At a later point, after accepting the awarded car you'll get the "do you want to make this your active car question". Seriously, menu option should spell this out for you...

The aforementioned 83 Honda with a staggering 93 HP. I don't mind the grind of racing games. I put up with it in GT's past and with Forza. What really sours me on the experience is that it's just a grind. There's no real incentive to keep doing the cups. Forza 3 made it fun. It was engaging and I felt the desire to keep at it. GT5 is just a series of menus to get to the racing and I'm finding that to be unsatisfying.

It's a lack of focus on actively engaging the player. Like I said, there are going to be a good many people who have no problem getting into the game. I find there to be no real incentive for me to slog through a bad UI to race shitty cars for the first few hours just to get anything decent. Pretty pictures and glossy menus do not cover up the fact that it's clunky.
I started out with the 1997 EK9 Honda Civic Type R...great little car. It seems I'm in the minority on here with loving this game. Its exactly what I expected.
Damn, I suck at kart racing, I find it much more difficult than driving the "real" cars!!!
So I've gone back in and given the game another chance. All my complaints still stand. Beyond that, the driving of the individual car is much better an a lot of fun. AI is terrible though. Very mindless. Couple that with the very inert collisions and the racing as a whole is boring.

I'm sticking with the game just to see where the patches take it in the next few months.
The UI, soundtrack, installation and load times are awful. The crash damage is so uninvolving that they might as well have not bothered - it's not like they bothered with the audio for it.

The driving is still nearly perfect though and it's stuffed with content. It's just not as good a "game" as Forza, even if it does drive better.

Oh it definitely is more difficult to drive the karts. Over-correct on a turn and you spin out with no chance of recovery.

Decided to play this morning before diving into work. Working on the beginner tier of challenges. Was about to dive into the older japanese cars series. I only have a couple of cars to my name, none of which are eligible in the races. So I exit out with a short list of cars I'd buy for that particular series. Can't find any older cars in the Premium stores. Then I discover the fucking lameness that is the Used car section - the same random bullshit that was in PSP GT. There's no option to browse the cars by manufacturer, year, power, or price. It's just two columns of randomly selected cars. None of the ones listed would let me try that particular series out.

Edited to add: Half of the beginner tier challenges are also seemingly locked out from the moronic used car system. Only series I can do is the FR car set.

Seriously, this is a lazily shat out game. What good is listing the sub-premium cars as a marketing checkmark on the back of the case if you can't get to them in a consistent manner.

I also like that when I decide to exit out of the community features, by way of typical menu expectations of hitting the circle button to exit out I always veer out to the main menu.

So does this game become a simulation later on in the game? In other sim games from Codemasters or Microsoft, even the arcadey ones like Grid/Dirt, when you took physical damage (of which doesn't even register in GT) your car would perform worse. There's no sense of dread in GT5, when you accidently bump into an ai on a tight corner there's no penalty incurred. There's no post race damage cost fee. No indication that oops I just blew out my radiator resulting in a dnf. That this would affect ai's in their bad driving would result in their performance being hampered. So far it feels like a racing game with spruced up bathtubs featuring realistic cornering and braking, but that's about it.

NFS Hot Pursuit is still my favorite racing game this year. May dump this out on goozex or gift it and just enjoy Forza.

Wow. Gran Turismo 5 finally arrived, after HOW many years of delays? And what did we get, actually it should have been named GT 4.2 as far as I've seen it's GT4 with some of the first Project Gotham's weather effects. Oh, I forgot, we get 1,000 plus cars.... If you like 20 versions of a Miata and a host of cars with under 80HP you are surely in Heaven. I got up to level 21 with 50 some cars, which all of were in GT 4 except the 08 Challenger. I have a funny feeling I'll be trading this in at my local gamestop this weekend. What a Major disappointment. And having owned and played the previous 4 GT games, that's saying a lot. Polyphony, drop the poly.

Nah, you're not alone. GT5 is more a 'car-enthusiast application' than a real fucking game. Which probably irritates most people. I think Hot Pursuit is the best racing 'game' of the year, no doubt. But driving is a different. I drive every day. I don't want to drive in a game. Unless it's Gran Turismo. Then it's cool. I like it. I appreciate the jazzy menu music. Whatever.

This development is not a surprise to anyone who has followed the series closely since GT3. However, it might come as a horrifying shock to the Sony execs that waited patiently for 6 years.

That being said, I still think the appeal of a AAA 'car-enthusiast app' is going to surpass even the most successful racing game (Hot Pursuit) because there are more car guys than there are arcade-racing guys. Being party to both factions, I don't advocate for one or the other. I fucking love Hot Pursuit. Best arcade racer maybe ever.

GT5? Best car-driving-museum thing I've seen. You're not motivated by 'beating levels' here. You're enjoyment is entirely predicated on how passionate you are for the actual act of driving. I think GT got away with this for a long time because it had the best graphics and the biggest name in the game. Not so anymore. Kaz may have gone too far in the 'enthusiast' direction to really justify 6 years of development. It is, after all, a PS3 game. But it's more than that. How much you actually enjoy this thing really depends on how much you are looking for. If you just want to race and have a good time, Hot Pursuit is what's up. I don't say that in a disparaging fashion at all. Hot Pursuit is badass - maybe my favorite game of the year.

Gran Turismo is on another plane. It's about driving. That's it. That's why the wrecks don't amount to shit in this game. You're not supposed to wreck when you're driving. If you wreck, you're doing it wrong.

This approach is going to appeal to an increasingly limited segment - to people like me and DJ Dylan. The backlash does not surprise me at all. I just hope they focus more on the game side next time because, really, there's nothing else to do with the driving portion.

But it's still gonna sell more than anything not called Call of Duty.

(can anyone back this up? I feel this statement is correct, but I don't have numbers to back it up.)

Everything you said is true. This game is aimed at the enthusiast who wants as accurate a driving experience as possible and wants to see the world's most beautiful cars do it right. I fall into that "serious car enthusiast" group and thus this game is like heaven for me.

F1 2010 is a great game. Definitely the best F1 game ever made. I've had it since release and its one of my fave racing games.

I didn't give this game a chance until last week, so I was surprised at how relatively great it is. Ogling, racing, and tinkering with cars I'll never be able to afford in real life is what makes the GT series fun for me, and this one does it better than most other car-enthusiast games. I think Forza's the better overall game, and there are more "fun" racing options out there for sure, but it's easy to appreciate GT5's polish. It's like an interactive car museum. The special events are particularly fun, although the Top Gear test track kicks my ass. Unlike Forza, GT5 isn't afraid to be blisteringly hard.

My main complaint: for a game marketed around having THOUSANDS OF CARS, it sure doesn't appear to have that many cars. mongycore referenced this above, but what the fuck is up with the dealerships? I can't race in most of the beginner races because I can't buy the required vehicles. My online dealership still has the same 12 shitty 80's cars (and two supercars I won't be able to afford this fiscal year, probably) as when I started last week. What a dumb system.
