So I managed to pick this up for 10 bucks (though it's currently 20 at Kmart) after hearing some good things about it from a friend. Needless to say, it's very Metal Gear.
The story is basically Big Boss from Snake Eater is beginning to build his Outer Heaven base that Solid Snake will eventually infiltrate in Metal Gear, only it's off the coast of South America. Some Costa Ricans ask Snake for help after a well-armed organization lands in their country and threatens the country and East/West relations. It's against Costa Rica's government to have armed forces, so Snake helps them out.
That's all fine and good, but it's the particulars that turns it into lulzy old Metal Gear. So one of the people that asks Snake for help is Paz, a 16 year old girl who was a POW. To prove she's a POW, there's a point in the cutscene where you can zoom in through her clothes and see her torture scars... and her underwear. That's right, you get to ogle a 16 year old girl! I find it really weird this made it in the American version. Metal Gear usually makes me go "godfuckingdammit Japan", but not this much. Who was the head of their localization team? Brian Ashcraft?
It doesn't end there. You rescue a female resistance fighter and she breaks her ankle during the rescue. Of course you get to zoom in through her pants and see her broken ankle... and her panties. This game's cutscenes may be lulzier and overall more inappropriate than MGS4's attempt at comedy with a fucking Special Forces agent that has diarrhea.
And are Costa Ricans all blond? It seems every local I come across has blond hair and blue eyes. Do the Japanese have a thing for blonds? Maybe a bunch of Nazis emigrated to Costa Rica and made offspring with the locals.
So the gameplay... the reason I bought this game. It's really damn good. It's separated into levels with a pretty addictive ranking system. Higher ranks lead to building a better base and getting new weapons. Each part of your base (R&D, infirmary, mess hall, combat unit) gets leveled up as you progress through the game. Repeatedly playing a "destroy the tank" mission to find the most efficient way of doing it is really addicting and is an effective way to perfect your stealthy technique. The controls are tough to get used to (you cant sidle along walls. crawl on the ground, and auto aim isn't very good... I usually stick to manual).
It's still a Metal Gear game, so if you weren't sold before you never will be. Oh, and Fulton Recovery, that balloon Batman used in China in THE DARK KNIGHT, is pretty fucking fun to use on people.
