MARK RUFFALO COULD HULK OUT

Thread Starter
The actor is in talks to play Bruce Banner in The Avengers.

Yeah, he's a perfect choice for this. He's got that kind look that i always thought Banner should have. And he can also do intense.
Oh, this would be fantastic.
I hope he takes the part. Easily one of my favorite actors of the last decade. It's about time he was in something of this magnitude.
I hope he takes it. Ruffalo and Downey had great chemistry together in ZODIAC.
I agree with everything you said about him, Devin.

He's also kind of Bixby-ish in that I really think he can radiate that quiet kind of goodness that hasn't quite been overtaken yet by the loneliness and rage within.

Not that Norton didn't understand that, and I'm still furious about Norton being out of the picture, but such is the hand we've been dealt.

Ruffalo is great.
If he takes the part I'm immediately longing for a solo HULK movie with Ruffalo leading.
He is definitely perfect. He's great a selling a sad, troubled kind of desperation that I think Banner really needs, that neither Bana nor Norton had.
Love it. Hopefully he takes the gig.
Man I hope this works out. Ruffalo is such perfect casting choice for Banner.

This, word by word. If they play the buddy/kindred men of science angle, it could be glorius (good example is Ellis Ultimate Human mini).
I was 100% sure there was nobody Marvel Studios could cast to make up for giving Norton the boot.

...until now. Holy shit, I LOVE this.
100% on board with this if it happens. Saw the thread title and thought, "Why didn't any of us think of that? It's perfect."
Perfect.. I hope this works out. I agree with Tati, he just had that "look".

Total Film suggested it, and someone in another thread linked that yesterday or the day before (Mike's Pants?), so it was out there, but no one really reacted to its mention.

I like Ruffalo plenty, but I'm having trouble picturing him Hulking out. Dude's so mellow, even when he's furious.
What an exciting and interesting choice. I agree with the comments on Downey and Ruffalo's chemistry, and also about how this would make me long for a solo Hulk movie with Ruffalo.
Ruffalo is one of my favorite actors, so FUCK YES PLEASE.
I have nothing but disdain for the last film, so things can only look up for future iterations of the character, especially with a high-quality actor like Ruffalo. Let's admit: Norton's take was just too mannered. Ruffalo's style is much better suited to the role.

That said, Marvel has got some issues if they think casting three different actors as Bruce Banner within a ten year period is doing them any good whatsoever. If they were more willing to make compromises for the sake of their talent, they'd be making great films, instead of fair-to-middling ones. Sure, you can say that no one goes to the Hulk movies for Banner... but unless there's some consistency in the performance through-lines, people will be hard pressed to give a shit. That said, if Ruffalo's role is meaty enough in the Avengers, he could own it.

Why?

Honestly, I'm not bothered by this pick as Bruce Banner's not a persona that's solidified in my mind like other comic alter egos, but for some reason Ruffalo falls out of my head after I've seen him in a flick. His pleasant, but not phenomenal IMO. Certainly not unforgettable. Unless I missed that capstone performance of his.

Not trying to cause a stir, just don't understand the clamour for Ruffalo.
My problem with casting Mark Ruffalo as Banner in The Avengers is the same problem I have with every film (which isn't Sympathy For Delicious) - that's still not enough Ruffalo
post #21 of 82
Zodiac + Brothers Bloom + You Can Count On Me = Great.
Ruffalo's a fantastic actor. He's great in YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, ZODIAC, ETERNAL SUNSHINE, and THE BROTHERS BLOOM... tons of movies. He certainly doesn't "fall out of my head" after I see his performance. YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, especially, is my favorite role of his. I've been in that brother/sister dynamic myself and he and Laura Linney played that perfectly.
If he signs, I am going to laugh my ass off at the juvenile Nortonites who called for a boycott. Ruffalo is a great actor, and would be perfect in this role. He would certainly add the heart that I felt Norton lacked.

I hope he gets it.

Saw ZODIAC. Quality, but often too dour (weird complaint, I know). Left me wishing that RDJ hadn't dropped out for such a large section. Carrying the film on Jake's shoulders was too much to ask.

EDIT: I'll put the other 2 on my homework watch list.

While it's kind of annoying I never had a problem with this. Now if they get Ruffalo, I hope they keep him as their Banner.
So much better than Joaquin Phoenix.

SO much better.
Nitpick time: can they outfit him with light eyes?

Love Ruffalo though, so any chance for him to shine is great. I think he'd make an awesome Banner.
"You can count on me...getting very angry."
Any complaints about him being too low-key don't really make sense to me. This casting really is only for Banner, seeing as the Hulk most likely won't be Ruffalo at all. So his more subdued delivery could work wonderfully for Banner, as well as give us a dimension I don't think we've seen yet - a more Jekyll-esque combat against the monster.

This is me as well. I loved Norton, and I even thought Phoenix was a decent replacement (though I would have preferred Norton).

But Ruffalo as Banner is genius.
He'd be the best casting Marvel has done since RDJ as Iron Man.
Yeah, this is great news. I finally saw The Brothers Bloom when it showed up in the cinemas here for about two days and his great performance is still in my mind.

Does this mean we'll get a new Hulk model too?

I'm talking about the part where he gets pissed off as Banner, triggering the transformation to Hulk. That scene of the actor that precedes every transformation into the Hulk. You know that part? That part.
I hope so. I'm still waiting for a Hulk that has more monsterous, neanderthal qualities. The last two incarnations of the character looked too human and subdued for my taste. I want a character that looks just boiling with uncontrollable rage.
Yeah yeah Ruffallo's great sign him already I'm sick of this crap
post #36 of 82
This casting is really, really strong. I liked Norton and thought his Hulk film was really good, but Ruffalo is an excellent choice.
If this goes through, we might finally have an interesting Banner and not just a placeholder.

Say what you want about Banna, but I think that statement is pretty unfair to Norton. If Ed Norton couldn't make the character work then I'm going to assume it had something more to do with the writing.*

*I say this as someone who really liked The Incredible Hulk.

This. Assuming Marvel will finally grow a pair and give the franchise the care and commitment to quality it deserves, instead of settling for mediocrity.

Contrary to what many may think, the Hulk does have the potential to make a fantastic film. It just needs the right people behind it.
Is there seriously any chance for another Hulk film? Making him the villain of The Avengers (yeah, yeah, it's from the comic) feels like the recycling of an otherwise dead property.

Totally subjective/possibly delusional, having sort of checked out of superhero movies about 90 minutes into Iron Man 2, but the Avengers feels like a swan song of sorts.
Jesus, I made the mistake of reading the comments on SuperHeroHype.com. Never make that mistake. It's a fucking zoo of retarded chimpanzees. This. Choice. Is. Perfect. He's one of those guys that we all should have been thinking of already.
I honestly don't think there is a good Hulk movie out there in the ether. They tried the arty approach: didn't work. They tried the big action movie: didn't work. The idea of a guy getting mad and turning into a green giant just isn't interesting enough on it's own. Made for an OK TV show in the 70's though.

I totally agree that the writing's been a problem, and I don't really expect it to improve. Thing is, Ruffalo's the type of actor who can wring an interesting character out of weak writing by use of sheer charisma. Norton isn't.

This.

He's like the stoned Bruce Banner.

If they're going to cast older, what's James Caviezel doing?
This is so much better of a choice than Mr. Phoenix. Ruffola will nail this roll.
Maybe its just me, but I kind of love the notion of a stoned Bruce Banner. It's funny and it's also logical for the character, given the importance of keeping Banner mellowed out, 'lest he Hulks out.
I bet Ruffalo has "angry" in his bag of acting tricks....
I'm the odd duck that'd rather Joaquin Phoenix, but Ruffalo would be a great pick.
Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
as long as he isn't quickly shot comign out of a night club, I'm in.

Love me a big bag of Ruffalo
